    It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive CZcams experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong...
    This time, as we test a 1998 Nissan Primera P11 2.0 GX Automatic, we discover some slightly firm seats, hear a characterful engine, sit in an austere interior, experience some fine driving dynamics and drone on about very little of any importance at all. Nothing untoward, then...

    This car is real 'trip down memory lane' for me because I once had a P11 Primera hatch on a R reg and in the very same green colour too - the only significant difference being that mine was a 1.6 SE manuel. I remember it was a solidly built, rust free and utterly reliable vehicle. The 1.6 was fast enough for me and it handled like it was on rails. Yes some find them rather bland, but the real drawback with them is that the ride was always on the firm side - very firm to be frank. Indeed I liked it so much I replaced it with a P12 Primera - which was much the same but the restyle made them look somewhat uglier.
    A good verging on great family car that is much undervalued methinks.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Před 2 lety

      Glad you enjoyed, sir! That 1.6 engine is very much rated by Mr Coleman, and was in the P10 Primera we tested on Tweed Jacket Reviews in May 2019, which he owned at the time. Those engines are very much favoured in the banger racing circuit due to their rev hungry nature and durability. Yes, a firm ride, but lots of cars are even worse than that these days.

    Excellent review as always Sir, that will be Loden Green I beleive, my dad had a Almera in the same shade back in 1998. A girl i knew from youthclub, her dad had one of these and used to get the occasional lift back in one of these. Great underated cars.

    I'm glad you enjoyed this nice example of this particular Nissan!
    Plus, your review confirmed what the other channel stated; a car that is a wolf in sheep's clothing! Ordinary but extremely capable.
    I can see the huge cargo area, the controls are typical Nissan.
    We had only the G20 as a sedan (saloon) in keeping with the others in the Infiniti line-up. I believe Infiniti wanted a small luxury sports sedan and the Primera/G20 fit that bill.
    I like the versatility of a liftback.
    Another excellent, exceptional review!

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, I remember the previous P10 Primera also had an Infiniti equivalent. Mr Coleman prefers the earlier type, although I thought that this was also a very good car. There was also an estate, but I am not sure you even needed it with a car this well endowed with space. Halfway through the collection now!

    Another great review again Mr Lloyd, I must say the Primera’s are a bit of a favourite of mine having had a P11, P11 facelift, and a p12, a little on the bland side internally BUT the ride and handling certainly make up for that,
    My favourite was the P11 facelift, I like the styling externally and the interior upgrades, sadly you don’t see too many of the P11 facelifts for sale these days.
    Good cars! Recommended!👍

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, never a massive fan of the P12, personally, as you could feel the Renault influence too strongly. The P11 facelift I do like, although I don't remember the last time I saw one. This one drove superbly, a little on the firm side, but that is definitely what some people prefer.

    Great review sir. This seems to back up very nicely what was said of them by the motoring press if the time that beneath the practical styling was a brilliant chassis and driving experience. A great car from the 1990s period. I remember these were very popular in the minicab trade, spacious and a smooth ride. I had a R reg Honda Accord 2.0ltr SE which was a joint collaboration build with the Rover 600 which I also previously owned. They had similar styling to the Primera, especially with the headlights and most of the frontal end. To sum up quiet handsome looking cars, and easy to service and maintain. I would love a car from these times but no thanks to the "ULEZ", unfortunately retro classic car ownership in the London area has become expensive. Thanks for your video, enjoyed watching it.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting

      No problem at all, thank you for watching! Yes, we are very familiar with the London Ultra Low Emission Zone on this channel, we have made many, many videos about it since 2018. Lots of cars have already been scrapped because of it, which is a bit of a shame. I had a Rover 620 myself in 2019, and tested one which was in better condition on the channel a year later. A lot of cars had very similar styling at this time, a criticism which many level at modern SUVs at the moment, but really this has been the case for quite a while!

    Brilliant Joseph, my first OEM company car a ruby red 2.0 SLX, new on my first day. You’re right they do handle amazingly, just the interior let them down at the time. I went to have an SRi and finally a facelift car (codename 144, I recall) with the smoother front end... bit of a shock when I moved to a Toyota and a first generation Avensis, step up in terms of interior.... not in handling!

      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Před 2 lety

      Glad you enjoyed it, Simon! The interior was all right, just a bit ordinary, I suppose. We do hope to try a facelifted one of these at some point if possible... The Avensis was rather a different prospect, wasn't it?

  • @seancooke7332
    @seancooke7332 Před 2 lety +1

    A great period of good quality choice for the motorist.
    This Primera was good value, drove well and was built well.
    The Toyota Avensis was roomy and easy to drive with good equipment levels.
    The Mazda 626 was not as gorgeous as the 1992 version but was practical with good engines and a huge estate version.
    Whereas the equivalent Mondeo or Vectra offered vast choice and specification.
    The Laguna was comfortable and longlegged while the Citroën C5 was quite spectacular, especially in estate form.
    Everything since has become overly wide and heavy.

      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes sir, the cars which were the rivals of the Primera were also interesting back in the day. I don't think I would like the Laguna or Xantia as much as something like a 626 or Avensis, but plenty more for me to try in the future!

  • @paulqueripel3493
    @paulqueripel3493 Před 2 lety

    The rear suspension isn't torsion bar. It's a beam axle, with , I think, a Watts linkage and trailing arms. Coil sprung.
    The front had a similar set up to the 300ZX.
    I had a 1998 SRi, no more power than this one, & I don't know if they changed the spring/damper rates or if it was just a trim change. It definitely had different front seats, with more pronounced side bolsters.
    I found the seats comfortable, especially because you could adjust the base height of the driver's seat separately front and back, also changing the angle and under thigh support.
    Great fun to drive, I could feel the steering angle change with the throttle round roundabouts in 2nd gear. Got rid of it when the London ULEZ extension was announced, after about 15 years of happy,reliable motoring.
    I remember a test when it came out, which had a quote from Eric van de Poele (Belgian racing driver), saying "this car is fun" while driving a journalist round the Nurburgring after holding a BMW 528 at bay (it did finally pass on a straight). The holding at bay might have been more to do with the respective skills of the drivers 🙂
    Only things that went wrong, new exhaust, drivers electric window switch and air con, The rest just general servicing
    edit. Timing belt? I thought these engines had chains.
    One thing that can go, apparently. The drive shafts are hollow and can rust through. Body rust? One small hole, lower rear wing when it was about 18 years old.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Před 2 lety

      The GA16 engine has a timing chain, the SR20 may well do as well. It's sometimes hard to remember everything correctly when filming four reviews in a day (which is what I was doing)... Don't know if the SRis had anything different in terms of the suspension, I am afraid. Thank you for watching!

    What a coincidence watching this Nissan Primera review!!!!. I bought from a friend in 2009, exactly the same colour Nissan Primera surprisingly an R reg also. The only difference was that mine was not a hatchback version, but the saloon. However the difference wasn't that obvious. What i noticed however, when l had my Nissan Primera was that many of these particular shape Primeras all came in green colour😂 Not sure why. My Primera was such a reliable car and felt quite heavy and firm while driving motorway journeys. I regretfully sold it in 2010 due to fuel consumption issues because mine was a 2 litre auto engine just like the one on this review, and it wasn't economical on fuel. Consumption was quite high and because i was doing lots of miles at the time, i had to regretfully trade it in for a smaller 1.3 manual Toyota Corolla😕

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Před 2 lety

      Well, we have a Corolla of that generation on No Budget Reviews in the same colour too! This dark green was far more common in the 1990s, and I absolutely love it. I can't imagine a 2.0 Automatic Primera is particularly economical, especially if you want to make swift progress with the SR20 engine singing away. Yes, the hatchbacks were more common, but they sold a fair few saloons too.

    I like the dash layout, functional but pleasing to look at. A very tidy design.
    I thought these a bit dull in period but after Mr Seabrook had a 2.0.one not so long ago I came to thinking this is perhaps one of those cars that's worth a second look. The car has aged very well.
    I expect the type of person who would have chose this when new over a Ford or Vauxhall may have also considered a Toyota Carina E or a Honda Accord.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Před 2 lety +1

      You did, sir! Not a big fan of the Vectra B, as you know. The P11 was fundamentally quite a different car underneath from the P10, to the extent that Mr Coleman tended not to use them for banger racing when they were still relatively common.

  • @willswheels283
    @willswheels283 Před 2 lety

    To add to my earlier comment, my first Primera was a dark red 2.0 SLX auto on a P reg, was a good car, sadly it met its end at an MOT test when it failed on a defunct ABS Modulator and at the time finding a used one for my particular Primera was extremely difficult and Nissan Wanted £1100 for a new one which was more than twice what I paid for the car, so it was scrapped which I was gutted about as it was low mileage.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Před 2 lety

      Yes, lots of cars from the late 1990s and early 2000s got scrapped for similar reasons in the 2010s in particular. The ABS is a bit over zealous in my 45 V6 as well, but having spoken to Mr Coleman about it, I have just decided to live with it. That is a shame about your car, main dealer only parts can be exceptionally frustrating....

I wonder how much people would pay that kind of money for this car. Secondhand hand i do understand that people bought this cars because you het allot of car and they are affordable when they are secondhand. My grandfather had this one secondhand for a short time a bordeaux red with a 2.0 engine and a wood look interior. 4 electric windows and a/c and a special audio system. They used it for their caravan vacations. But when my grandma died and my grandpa was alone he traded it for a Nissan Micra . Very nice car. But i would go for the 626 from that time. I had one of these in 1999. A P-Reg 2L SE. The chassis was great, I remember many reviews comparing it favourably with the Mondeo. Unfortunately I had a few engine issues, the dealer steam cleaned it and water got in. After that it was never the same, great holes in the torque curve between 1500 & 2500 rpm.
    I actually considered buying one mid last year. A S reg SE saloon, one elderly owner with low miles. But the dealer was dodgy so I decided against it. If it was a hatch I may have taken the risk, it was only £800. It was a 4 speed auto. The S reg must have had a slight update over the P reg as this one had a trip computer, mine did not.
    Personally I prefer the pre face lift, yes it is understated, some say boring, but the facelift seemed gimicky. Also post facelift they replaced the 4 speed auto with a CVT. Avoid this at all costs.
    There is a 2L SE in daily use in my local town. I keep looking to see if there is a for sale sign on it. :)
