- In this video, I had the honour to meeting and interviewing Roman Kim, who is regarded by many to being one of the greatest violinists of this century. In this interview, Roman will be sharing about his practice routines, methods and tips on how you can improve as a musician. He will also be sharing some amazing stories which you will not believe. And we will play a game I came up with called 'Guess the Score'. Make sure to watch this until the end.
I will be uploading part 2 shortly where he will be answering some of the questions you've asked him.

@@Revan-up5tl always :)
ahhhh this was soooo cooolll!!! He is crazyyy
THIS IS REALLY CRAZY, YOU ACTUALY COULD HAVE AN INTERVIEW WITH LEGEND
if there is part 2 of this interview, could you ask what roman kim thinks of ysaye and his music please? i am fan of both😍❤️ thank you greatly for this wondeful interview!❤
Damn his personality is way more interesting than I thought
So he had a fever when he recorded his Beethoven 5th???? WHAT?????
Bro fried a lil bit of his brain using 250% of it
The man, the myth, the legend…
Dang, Kim is so imaginative and well-rounded just as how skilled and capable he is! Thank you for having this interview with him! 😊
Edit: His love for learning anything too, is so inspirational!
Thank you for doing this interview Roman Kim. It is incredible listening to you play.
This was a joy to watch. You really miss when a violinist this accomplished does not have a social presence as large as other soloists. His passion for the violin really resonates and his love for composition and violin playing really shines through!
This is an incredible interview! Thank you so much for allowing this opportunity to be shared! Kim is obviously an incredible creator and performer, but this provides so much of his enjoyable personality to shine through too.
Great editing as well! I appreciated the subtitles. This is probably some of my very favorite content you’ve created!
I have never heard this man speak before. I had seen some of his epic videos and like everyone else already held him at the very highest level which is almost mythical.
But now hearing him speak, and so beautifully, my heart holds him even higher in my estimations, if that was even possible! How wonderful that someone so talented and creative can relate to everything we know and understand. It makes me so happy that that the very best player can be so modest, warm and friendly. Not all famous successful people are like this! The way he speaks is next level, such a role model, and explains why his violin playing is at the next level. And hearing him engage like this is a valuable life lesson for us all. Thank you to you for this interview. And an extra feather in the cap to Roman Kim. Yes he is the living legend I hoped he was and so much more. The stuff of dreams and he is real. I am blown away!
Awesome man. Roman is so cool. I think it is great he is composing his own music as many soloists of the day do not do this really anymore. I read some criticism of Roman on the violinist subreddit and thought it was unfair, like calling him a "gimmick" because of the pieces he plays? I think a lot of people are jealous of his ability. He's paving the way for the next generation of violinist with his compositions just like Paganini did.
Definitely jealous... for sure!
I never knew that Roman Kim is such a funny and cheerful violinist! Thank you for this video! Can’t wait for the part 2!
To hear this man speak about how he learned and the dedication he put in to learning was wonderful. I’m so happy you got this opportunity cause I’ve always wanted to know more about this man, what a wonderful interview thank you both for doing this.
you are amazing for interviewing this legend. So it wasn’t an April fools joke
It was all actually an AI deepfake
@@nickcarroll8565shiver me timbers 😭
What I respect most about Roman Kim is not his phenomenal violin-playing ability (although that, it goes without saying, is completely jaw-dropping). I love that he writes and arranges his own stuff. He stands in front of the audience as a composer (plus as a brilliant performer). He puts his heart and soul on the line by performing his own pieces. This is the historical soul of classical music. There are many amazing performers out there. But if everyone follows the "safe path" the industry creates for them of more performances of the Tchaikovsky violin concerto (or whatever), classical music just becomes a fossil. Of course, I love and respect great performances of Tchaikovsky et al, but we also need Roman Kim and his ilk to keep classical music truly alive. I look forward to his next concerto! I can say that about no other living virtuoso apart from Daniil Trifonov (although other suggestions welcome if you have them!). I have been waiting to learn more about what makes Roman Kim tick for a while. Thank you for the interview (and kudos for getting it!).
Some more great composer-pianists to look out for are Gabriela Montero and Stewart Goodyear. Gabriela is better known for her incredible improvisations than her compositions, but that's been an even rarer skill amongst classical musicians over the past century. Wynton Marsalis has also been writing a lot of classical music in recent years, including concertos for violin, trumpet and tuba, and he recorded several albums of pieces from the standard trumpet repertoire in the 80s and 90s, so he also counts as a classical composer-performer (although he's better known as a jazz musician). I struggle to think of any other well-known string players who regularly perform their own compositions though.
@@MelodiousThunk Thank you for the great suggestions. Have had a quick listen and will spend longer over the coming days. Just a quick reply to say thanks.
@@philipseatoncomposer6890 Sure! I've just remembered two other well-known composer-pianists: Stephen Hough and Marc-Andre Hamelin.
Although not strictly in the classical scene, I highly reccommend that you check out jazz-fusion guitarist and composer Shawn Lane. He composed and played live performances when he was only 16 years old, and at that age he was already considered a legend by many other virtuosos in the guitar community. It has been 20 years since his passing and now even the most advanced and most technically accomplished modern-day guitarists in the industry still look up to him as an absolute Mount Olympus of guitar playing, with his perfect blend of on-command, humanly impossible technique and emotional melodies that come directly from the heart. Interestingly, Shawn also played classical piano although he didn't play professionally.
When I heard Roman Kim for the first time, I immediately thought about Shawn Lane. Both raise the bar to an unimaginable level with their respective instruments, have a great love for music, and share a very unique showmanship where they can perform anything they want, anywhere and anytime, and the things they play are uniquely their own, and are impossible to replicate.
It's great to have revived the tradition of a virtuoso who also writes transcriptions and composes.
Love how the host made the interview! Great questions and also funny.
Really looking forward to Roman Kim strings. Love trying new strings. Helps me wanting to play more.
Crafted by quite possibly the most skilled violinist those strings must be perfect.
Man I knew it! He loves Rock! Just the way he plays the violin reminds me of a rockstar. Absolute genius. When I saw his arrangement for Air on G for violin it reminds me of how it is played on classical guitar.
Huge fan of Roman - makes me happy he’s as charismatic as he is talented
Such a warm humble personality. Charming guy! Thanks for doing an interview with Roman!
Thumbs up if you REALLY wanted him to say “I practice 40 hrs a day” or similar 🙌🏼🙌🏽🙌🏾🙌🙌🏿
I don't even play the violin, and am not even a performer, but I'm watching this solely because Roman Kim is insanely talented. Great interviewing skills! This video should have many more views
This was much needed!! Fantastic interview with a truly one of a kind musician 🎻💯 A great peice of history added here!
It's so cool that he made his own strings and likes making things with his hands. Personally, I only recently discovered this joy when I set up my moped from scratch.
The Russian Superrr was great! :) I love Roman and his English and I love your channel^^
I couldn't believe this thumbnail when I saw it! Had to check this wasn't uploaded April 1st. You're making your way up ViolinMechanic!
What a treat. Thank you for doing this interview with a living legend. Many words of wisdom not just for violin but life in general.
I love Roman Kim and I would really love to meet him in person one day
It's great to see the man behind the music. Thank you for capturing this so nicely. :)
Thank you for this. It’s so heartwarming to see the modest, human side of this legend. What a passion for his art.
Roman can a loving human buddy and an alien violinist at the same time.... ❤ Lovely and important interview ❤
Great video, awesome violinist. You have my admiration Mr. Kim.
Not only a great!!! musician, but also a nice modest person. Thanks ViolinMachanic
Apart from his unbelievably good play I love his joy in inventing something. A string-making machine! And all the other things he mentioned. I thoroughly enjoyed this interview, thank you, @ViolinMechanic
It’s surprising that he spoke as a normal human😝 Really great and precious interview!!!
Wow you actually did it! I would love more serious content geared towards classical music fans. Interview with your personal luthier and your peers would be really cool!

This is what all of us were waiting for. Thank you so much, really!!
I have been waiting for this, let's go!
This will be a treat!
Wonderful interview! I'd love to hear Roman talk about Bach, what exactly does he like about Bach that makes him his favourite composer? And maybe his thought process when he interprets Bach etc.
He’s so incredibly charming! Unsure what I expected, exactly, but it was more 😂 Thank you for doing this!
Thank you for sharing sir 🙏🏾
Потрясающий, необыкновенный Роман Ким! Сколько у него энергии и легкости во всем! Редкий талант и личнось одновременно! !одновременно!одновременно! Успехов и новых музыкальных идей Роману! Спасибо!!!

The peril of arranging recordings in hired venues---even when you feel unwell or are actually sick, you gotta push through
Great interview and what a genuine, warm and interesting person as well as a phenomenal violinist and arranger.
Roman Kim is amazing!!!!! So many Korean or Korean heritage violinists taking over the world!!!!
I think Roman Kim is the most talented, most interesting violinist I’ve ever heard. He’s already a legend.
Also a well conducted interview VM. Grats.
Roman Kim is very out of this world! And now he speaks... he can reveal his own techniques, by explaining how...

IM SO EXCITED AAHHHHHH *explodes*
Roman Kim is so talented; I love Valse pour Ana :)
An interview for the history of music.
11:54 not everyone can say they've written stuff that's harder than paganini
duuuuude i cant believe it its actually roman kim the man himself aaaaaaaa
You are wonderful violin mechanics❤ 12:54
Why is he not as big and well-known a soloist than he deserves? Kind of absurd.
Happens all the time, in different genres. It all depends on circumstances and who you know, aside from skill and creativity.
damn, he came to TURKEY and I missed it ???🥲
16:19 Violin is a martial art.
The samurai Miyamoto Musashi in ‘The Book of Five Rings’ gives similar advice in regards to practice as Roman does here:
“You must walk down the path of a thousand miles step by step, keeping at heart the spirit which one gains from repeated practice with whomever one can get to practice with, and knowledge attained from whatever experiences you can come by, without impatience.”
And to Roman’s point about practicing on the stage as much as you can, Miyamoto similarly writes “You can only fight [perform] the way you practice.”
💓
Wow...
In case yoy havent already done part two, could you please ask him about the fingerboard on his violin?
Bruce Lee books… makes sense. His a master at his craft
Ask him when he will release sheet music for Beethoven 5!!!
Would you ask him when to come to U.S, we are deadly to see him live
beruntung sekali roman kim diwawancarai oleh kamu😊
