Hushed and Grim is a phenomenal album. I am glad that they kept all 15, even if some songs took longer to grow on me than others.
Baby Balls is good, but Medium Balls really takes it to another level
I can only assume both of those were written as the first two parts of a trilogy, with Big Balls by ACDC being the final part.
When the band announced the new release I was so anxious. I was counting the days thinking "please let it be good" I needed so much something to break this shitty atmosphere of the last 1,5 year. As a person I never expect anything good to happen. So when the album was out and listened to it, I couldn't remember the last time I felt so relieved. Don't get me wrong, it's not that I doubted that Mastodon could bring something good. But the greatness of this album still amazes me after so many times I've listened to it till this day. Mastodon is one of the few bands I am happy and proud to live in their time

I'd honestly love it if they could find a way to just release instrumental versions of every record. Really being able to dive into all the nuances of the music on Crack the Skye really spoiled me.

Great replay value on this record. Great tones, textures, sonic variety, heavy vs. soft movements. Bravo!
Stoked to see them recently with Opeth and Zeal & Ardor. Seen them 5 times now and this is the best I’ve heard them sound in a live setting.
To top it off, these guys are hilarious. Keep pumping out the good tunes!
Facts. I saw them in Albany from first row center and fell back in love with them as a band. I've also seem them many times in the past and the sound quality was always mediocre. They sounded incredible this tour and new disc is a masterpiece. Hadn't heard any of the new songs before seeing them. Was totally caught off guard at how awesome it sounded. Was two gummies deep when they played Skeleton of Splendor. Mind blown 🤯
Personally for me, Zeal and Ardor were embarrassing. The rest of the show was amazing. Mastodon absolutely killed it.
And Opeth closing with Deliverance can never be a bad thing
@@TrevorLahey3 I didn't mind zeal and ardor. They were low impact but not offensive to the ears. When I saw Gojira on last tour that band knocked loose was easily one of the worst openers I've ever heard. Just screamy nonsense with generic metal riffs lol.
Agreed in regard to deliverance. Killer song but they've been closing with it for so many years now. Definitely ready for a change. Got to see them close a couple shows with Blackwater park which was incredible.

No real point in having him in much of these videos since this whole record, aside from about 2 songs, seems to have been put together as a three piece.
I get worried about that. Himself and the band members have “joked” about him only coming in when it’s time to solo. He also says he misses the older style. That and the fact that a couple of solos on this album were different guitarists, and him only singing on 2 tracks….man

In this modern time where you can stream any track, from any album at a click. This masterpiece brings me back to my youth when you just have to listen to it all from beginning to end. Amazing!

I definitely felt like for a general audience this album is too long and probably should have been a tighter one hour album.. but also as someone who just wants to smoke a doobie, lay back, press play, and let you do the rest, I could not be happier to have 90 uninterrupted minutes

I didn't realize this was a double album.
Yep, on streaming services it's just 15 tracks in a row- on CD it's split between 2 discs, on vinyl there are 2 LPs (although there were as standard for OMRTS and EOS too).

I think each song has all the different ball sizes scattered around them.
I'm not into vinyl but the artworks in this one will likely get me buy my first one. and then go on with other mastodon vinyls.

I was listening to the album for the second time yesterday, driving on a road back home. Obviously it's strong, full of great ideas, but i PERSONALY think that there are some songs that should've been out of the record, such as Dagger, had it all, Skeleton of Splendor, for example. I also miss more of Brent, my favorite voice of the band. But i guess that it's his own personal choice to write only 2 songs....

You know, I too had those exact thoughts about those 3 songs at first, maybe even second listen. After that, I feel like I was starting to tune into what drives those songs and more importantly, how Troy's vocal abilities really come through. I mean, he's great the album through, but those tracks allow him to do what he does differently. Hell, this whole body of work is largely driven around themes of loss and death. It shows their depth and where they're willing to go and still manage to be who they are.

These are way too short
Personally, I think the double album thing was a mistake. I'm sorry to say that I just find from Dagger onwards boring, and not because I feel like the record is overrunning at that point, but because I just don't think they're very interesting songs compared to the ones before them. Tracks 1 to 9 are all strong (although maybe they could have replaced The Crux with a better song - Fallen Torches maybe?), and they could have closed it out with The Beast.
Funny that, I think I like the sings on the second half more.

This album is not good. I’ve tried multiple times and can’t get into it. There’s nothing special on this album. I was incredibly bored and was happy when it ended. I say this as a massive mastodon fan so I’m not trying to shit on them. After multiple listens there still isn’t a single song that I’d want to hear again.
Did you recall the album yet for awful production?
Missed opportunity. If you cut The Crux, Skeleton of Splendor, Teardrinker, Had it All and Savage Lands you have Mastodon's strongest record outwith Crack the Skye imo... also, why is the artwork so poor? It's a like 14 year old from the early eighties drew a fantasy record package in his school books.
