Not my favorite album, but I also don't understand why a lot of fans dislike it. Also Black Tongue is probably top 3 for me.
i believe around the release of the album many fans thought that the sound really different from what they've done before, especially coming after Crack the Skye with it full prog glory.
The Hunter is a fantastic album and underneath all those cool catchy vocals are some of the most complex guitar phrasings the band has ever done. Especially shit like Octopus Has No Friends.
I was disappointed with the Hunter when it first came out. I expected something bigger after crack the skye. Nothing was ever going to live up to crack the skye. Eventually I stopped judging the album so harshly and I started to love it after a while.
Crack the Skye is from another realm. Pulls something out of my chest every time I hear it.

Mastodon has always been a band to me that has never had a weak album. Everything is gold in my opinion. Can’t wait to see you guys hopefully in Chicago next year🤘🏻
I find The Hunter to be that one weak album. I only like about half the songs in there, and most are much too short and straightforward. It was a real disappointment, especially right after the masterpiece that is Crack The Skye.
@@DavidOakesMusic H&G is most definitely not CTS 2, and yet we finally have that worthy successor, proof that you can keep on making ambitious music without repeating yourself. Maybe think a little before you speak next time?

Agreed, there is no such thing as a weak Mastodon album. Some are better than others but they are all good.
I agree, every album they've released is a masterpiece, even if that means the three good tracks on emperor of sand shine bright enough to outweigh the other not so good ones. hehe.

01:03 Brann, Crack the Skye is my favorite too! I discover that history whem my sister was on quimioterapy ( now she is on remission \o/ ). Sometimes I cried listem "Stairway to Heavem" on Mastodon's version and "Crack the Skye". At that time I moved from Brazil to England to help her and Mastodon was my soundtrack. After I discover that Mastodon played at the pub Blondies, beside of the place where I hosted, my favorite pub in London, too bad I couldn't see them there. Amazing band, thanks for existing!

The song Crack the Skye is definitely one of my top five favorites from Mastodon (along with probably three others from that album, it really is perfect). They completely nailed it in every single way and Kelly’s vocals still give me chills.

It's funny the way Brent says his favourite albums are the early ones.
So the question is, why not write music that's like those earlier albums?
Especially considering those first four albums are infinitely better than their more recent stuff.
