    I love mastodon to pieces. First got into them because of the hunter curl of the burl. Such a diverse band especially from beginning to now.

    I got into Mastodon because a video called "Metal Genres Described by Simpsons Clips". At one point, it described sludge metal and Blood and Thunder played while it showed a clip of Homer being submerged in a puddle of oil (or quicksand or sand), but it was a reverse clip of the elephant SAVING Homer. I was obsessed with that song that I played that song constantly. I wanted the album that it came from but couldn't find it in my local Sunrise. They only had Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye. I bought both of them, listened to them and loved them!!!

    I'm happy to see someone else who loves Emperor of Sand and Once More Round the Sun! I remember not being thrilled with either of them initially, but they both grew on me tremendously over time.

    Love the video! I was hoping you wouldo something like this. I'm so glad that you gave "hushed and grim" another shot and that it grew on you, I told you it wood! It's definitely gloomy and that's why I love it so much.
    Asking me to rank my favorite Mastodon albums is asking me the impossible. Practice guy is definitely number one on my list but the rest sort of fall into a second spot position for me. My to lowest ranking ones would be the same two on your list, not because I don't like them, but because just like you, I definitely love the more progressive Mastodon stuff. I still love those two albums, though! Disband just can't do any wrong for me. I'm glad you like "the creature lives" as much as you do because it's definitely one of my favorites. I'm not going to start naming all of my favorite songs because there's just too many of them, but I will tell you this; sleeping giant has been my ringtone for about 11 years now. It's the part that starts at 2:47 and ends around 30 seconds later.
    Glad to see that you've been well! Hope to talk to you soon.

    Great video! I love all of their albums so much myself, but my favorite albums would definitely have to be The Hunter and Crack The Skye. Those albums helped me get through a really rough part of my life, especially the song All The Heavy Lifting. The lyrics "Just close your eyes and pretend that everything's fine" hit close to home for me. I wasn't really a metalhead at all when I first started listening to them, the only reason I found out about them was because they made a song that was on Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Probably the most random way I could have discovered them, but I'm glad I did. Also, Halloween is underrated for sure!

    • @JJMetalhead
      @JJMetalhead  Před 3 měsíci +2

      I love that lyric. Mastodon has some of the best song writing ever, and k think it has to do with how much pain and loss each of the members have been through.

    My own preferences are kind of flipped from yours, but I think like you mentioned about timing, it was that for me as well, it's just that the early stuff is what I fell in love with. Sadly I didn't keep up with everything the band released in their later years apart from their singles, but of the stuff I know well I'd rank them as:
    1. Crack the Skye
    2. Blood Mountain
    3. Leviathan
    4. Remission
    5. The Hunter
    Anyway, this has inspired me to go and play all their songs the next time I have a day free and really give them a close listen

    The first song I ever heard was weirdly Seabeast from a Guitar World magazine CD. I was late middle school / early high school at the time and it was a little hard for me to get into but something about it just intrigued me. I was still young into my musical journey! Blood and Thunder eventually hooked me hard but ironically Blood Mountain was the first album I bought. As you said, the drum intro to The Wolf is Loose is absolutely fucking legendary. Fun fact, did you know Cedric from The Mars Volta is on that album? 😄
    The funniest story is when I bought Remission at a store called FYE. I was not familiar with the album at all aside from it was Mastodon and I wanted more. An employee saw I was buying the album and freaked out. He started air drumming and singing March of the Fire Ants. Also was upset I was not familiar with the album. He was quitting and it was obvious he was trying to annoy his manager along with being happy someone was into Mastodon haha. He wasn't wrong and Remission is forever my favorite album from Mastodon. The heaviness is absolutely crushing and the DRUMMING is pure insanity. I enjoy all of Mastodon's albums but wanted to share how I started with them and my personal favorite albums. Love ranking videos and you should consider doing more of them!

    Leviathan will always be my #1. This was the version of Mastodon that nailed it for me. Proggy, but still very aggressive. Blood Mountain is a close second. I really wish they would have stuck with this style. Unfortunately, they became too mainstream sounding in later years and I lost interest. Hushed & Grim is one of the most boring albums I've heard in a long time.

  • @juanidelgado8029
    @juanidelgado8029 Před 6 měsíci

    one more thing about Hushed and Grim, Brann went through a divorce and many of the lyrics and songs like Teardrinker or More Than I Could Chew were written by Brann with this in mind, and also in mixture with the loss of Nick John i agree with you it is an album about getting through loss and moving on.. one of the songs that i feel is like a 50/50 inspiration of those 2 ingredients (hah) is the last song Gigantium, i feel those lyrics serve the same purpose and they're directed at both things at the same time.
    but thats just my interpretation!
