I am definitely a Tool fan... have been since Undertow came out. I would rank the studio albums as follows:
S tier: Lateralus, Aenima, 10,000 Days
    A tier: Fear Innoculum, Undertow
    B tier: Opiate
I am not the type of listener to pick out and only listen to singles. I like to listen to the whole album start to finish as the artist intended. Tool (and NIN) are very much an 'album' band where 1 song leads into the next. Yes, there is 'fluff' on every album (true for every band/artist), but when taken as a whole, each album/song has a place and is just excellent.
10,000 Days (Wings pt. 2) has one of the most beautiful builds in music... the rhythm is intoxicating and damn near brings a tear to my eye every time. Not sure how any one can call this boring.
For reference - my favourite bands include: NIN, Primus, Tool, Ministry, Faith No More, Skinny Puppy, KMFDM, Radiohead, Nirvana, Puscifer, Alexisonfire, The Tragically Hip

I agree with your list more than the list in the video. My tier list would be this:
S Tier: Lateralus, Fear Innoculum, 10,000 Days
      A Tier: Aenima
      B Tier: Undertow
      C Tier: Opiate
I just have to give Fear Inoculum S Tier because it is so sonically pleasing. Danny's drumming has never sounded better. The production is just wonderful, it's got two of my favourite Tool songs of all time (Pneuma and Descending are both in my top 5 of all time). Lateralus has two of my top 5 Tool songs as well, Lateralus and Schism. 10,000 Days has the Pot (rounding off my top 5).
Aenima (since it doesn't contain any top 5 tracks goes down to A Tier, even though I love the album.
If I could make a "Best of Tool" album it would have to be a double album and go something like this:
      Side A:
      1: Pneuma
      2: Lateralus
      3: Schism
      4: Descending
      5: The Pot
      6: The Grudge
      7/8: Parabol/Parabola
      9: Forty Six & 2
      10: Pushit
      11: Right In Two
      12: Jambi
      Side B:
      1: 7empest
      2: Triad
      3: Hooker With A Penis
      4: Invincible
      5: Opiate
      6: Sober
      7: The Patient
      8: H
      9 Culling Voices
      10: Vicarious
      11: Rosetta Stoned
23 songs for the 23 pairs chromosomes in the human DNA double helix, because "RIDE THE SPIRAL TO THE END", and because 23x2= Forty Six (& 2 sides of the double album). And that's me being an "Overthinking Tool snob and part of the arrogant toxic fandom" (just as a joke, of course).

Besides the epic song Rosetta Stoned on 10,000 Days album, that album is honestly my least favorite, but being that is one of my favorite Tool songs it ranks higher in my opinion. Opiate I feel is so damn good and underated, especially only being a EP. It's short with no filler. Hush is almost more relevant today then at it's time. But we all know all Tool music is 🔥.

Late to the party (late to your video. I've been a Tool fan since 10000 Days came out), but here it goes...10000 days was my #1 spot for a while for it's heavier riffage, crazy drum work and Maynard's emotional touch on this record, especially the title track (part 1 & 2). The overall energy and vibes of this record hit me like a ton of bricks (still does to this day). To each their own dude and much respect to your opinion of this record...and then I heard Lateralus which immediately knocked 10000 days off the high horse platform! Lateralus is in my top 15 records of all time! I wanna do a similar ranking of Tool's albums on my channel at some point, but here is mine at this moment:
    1. Lateralus
    2. 10000 Days
    3. Ænima
    4. Fear Inoculum
    5. Undertow
    6. Opiate (production and pre evolution reasons for this being at the bottom for me).

Aenema is my favorite album of all time.
I am a Tool fanboy and I agree they are pretentious.
Die Eir Von Satan is a German cookie recipe lol
The Pushit live one is on the Salival album. I agree I prefer that one more than the studio.
Aenema references Bill Hicks jokes as lyrics then Third Eye has Bill Hicks doing the intro. In the booklet, they practically praise Bill Hicks for the album. He apparently opened Tool before or it was the other way around?
Lost Keys connects to Rosetta Stoned.
I thought Fear Inoculum was... okay. The title track is great but otherwise it’s just okay.
Have you listened to APC or Puscifer? I love both of them as well.

I remember being a kid in the early 90's hearing Sober and Prison Sex and kind of getting them wrong, ie. thinking they were sort of this metal-oriented but wacky Primus type band. It was hearing H, Eulogy, Push It, Third Eye, etc. on Aenima that got me realizing that they were doing something a lot deeper / broader.

Again, I love them all equally as Tool is the band I enjoy, the best. You’re entitled to you’re opinion, but I think you’re looking at 10,000 days with Aenima and Lateralus lenses. Just listen to it like a Tool album 🤷. I know they were going for a more garage rock sound. Different producer from Lateralus and Aenima. I don’t think Tool need to make every song build to a massive instrumental payoff. 10,000 day’s builds are every subtle, but they’re most definitely there. I’d even argue lost keys and Rosetta stoned plays into the end of Lateralus with the area 51 stuff. Wings for Marie builds to the title track, which builds and pays off with some great vocals by Maynard with a very interesting melody. Again, it’s subtle. But yeah, it’s not Pushit or the Grudge. They climax differently. If I was introducing someone to Tool I’d have them hear Lateralus or 10,000 days first, I think they’re the best places to start, then lock them in with Aenima. Opiate and undertow are what they, great hard rock albums with a new sound. And Fear Inoculum is an album made for die hard Tool fans, and frankly, I’d say it’s their most impressive work. However, peak Tool includes 10,000 days. IMO

10,000 Days isn't up there for me either, but I do feel it's better than any of the music they put out when they had Paul D'Amor in the band. With that said...listen to the album this way: play tracks 9-11, then loop back and play tracks 1-8. Why? Press play on track 9 when the Lion roars at the start of 2001: A Space Odyssy. If you do this in this order, the album syncs with the movie just the way the Wizard of Oz did with Darkside of the Moon.

Good luck dealing with all the Tool fans. I will say that I like that you gave the first two albums a good spot. Undertow and Opiate are aging so well and I prefer them over most of the later prog albums. Aneima is the best and will always be the best. Top three albums of all time for me. 21:37 - Sure, I'll be 'one of those people' for a second :). 'Right in Two' gets me solidly, in sort of a Pink Floyd 'Us and Them' way. If I were actually think of which Tool songs put the sharpest point on what feels like it's the core essence of what they do the first tune that comes to mind is the back half of Push It (from the breakdown in the middle onward - and the melodies are absolutely bone-chilling) and then Right In Two is really evocative just for how much big-picture ontological grief that it's dripping with, a bit like a bunch of guys who had a massive 'spiritual' opening with ayahuasca and caught the new age space of human internal possibilities but had it knocked back out of them again in a pessimist materialist game theory direction all the while still being haunted by the ghost of that image - a bit like the sorrow that was in a lot of the King Crimson post-hippy stuff when they had to grapple with the likelihood that there's something fundamentally wrong with human nature (biological not divine) and that war, greed, etc. weren't just a matter of ignorance.

Even just looking in the comments, a lot of people are choosing their favorite tool album being the one they started with. I recently found out about tool when my friend played wings pt 2 in his car while we were out for a ride. At first I was stunned at its run time, but god damn it’s build up and that riff all throughout is just amazing. Love the song. That was a big break though moment for me hearing that song. Another was when I finally went and listened to lateralus. I was listening in my car when the switchover from parabol to parabola hit and noticed it changed songs. Super cool that they did that, and went back to 10,000 days and saw that Rosetta stoned did it too. Also, I think Rosetta stoned is the continuation of Faaip De Oiad, as there’s that talk of Area 51, aliens, and a man who is in dread trying to warn the world. But whatever it all sounds cool

Didn't love Fear Inoculum at first but now I don't mind it. I like the same songs you did plus Invincible. Maybe chop 2 minutes of guitar soloing off of a couple songs. I was also bummed with 10,000 days when I heard the long Wings to Marie tracks. Couldn't believe that was like 12 minutes of the album right there, despite the heavy handed meaning behind them. I actually do like Rosetta Stoned a lot but outside of the four main tracks, the album is pretty weak. My last comment, I promise.

I think the main reason why people don't like 10K as much as the others is cuz the tracklisting is weird. They should've made the title track the finale of the album since you're not always in the mood for someone singing about his dead mother. As for Fear Inoculum i kinda like the meandering atmospheric tracks but there was no way it could live up for the 13 year hype (and that was partially Tool's fault lmao). Undertow is a really good first album and Lateralus and Aenima are classics even outside prog metal. The only Tool record i think is mediocre is Opiate. I only listen to 2 tracks from it from time to time ("Sweat" and "Part of me"), the other songs are pretty cringy but you gotta start somewhere.

10000 days has 3 superb! superb! songs. Issue is that TOOL give us to much music on album. If they reduce album to only 5 songs (41 minutes) it will be great.
Vicarious is so good, that only for this I adore this album.
Fear Inoculum is superb! Culing Voices is absolut masterpiece! 1 song Fear is great, 2 Pneuma - masterpiece, CV masterpiece, other are ok.
My favourite is Lateralus, and Aenima second. 3 Fear... 4. 10 000.

  • @philliplloyd1518
    @philliplloyd1518 Před 3 měsíci +1

I agree with this list, however I would argue that undertow is their best album. Its the only album in which they know their limitations and don't pretend to be a band that their not. They are a good, maybe a very good band, that after undertow, became too ambitious for their own musical capabilities and their musical creativity. They don't have the chops for 11 minute songs, period. Danny Carey is a great drummer, but the rest of the band is average to above average at best, especially adam jones. They are definitely overreated and I understand why to a certain extent. The demand for their music extremely outweighed the supply of music they put out. What I don't understand is Tool super fans talking about tool as one of the best bands ever. I like tool but they are nothing more than a good band. 10,000 days and Fear Inoculum kind of suck.

@@MetalTrenches i think there's a lot of fans who relate to the song (e.g. i lost my dad to a 5 year battle with cancer) and then it hits you very differently. When i listen to Pt1 and Pt2 and then that moment comes where he sings "give me my wings", i cry and get goosebumps everytime, and i think a lot of fans experience that too. So it's kind of baffling when others don't get that feeling haha but you're right music taste is entirely subjective:))

For me it goes as follows:
    S Tier: Lateralus and Ænima
A Tier: Undertow, because even though it's early Tool it is very consistent and very good
B or C Tier: 10,000 Days because it has very high highs and very boring parts. The good songs are A Tier material, but the boring parts make it less good than Undertow
D Tier: Fear Inoculum because it is incredibly boring and long and it seems they just embraced the full-on pretentiousness of prog, without the thongue in cheek humour that made their classic albums so great.
    I haven't listened to Opiate a lot do i can't rate it
It would be funny that a bunch of Brad Taste In Music fans watch this video and bomb the comments with: Fettucini Sequence, Rigatoni Sequence, etc.
