  • Most of the motor vehicle thermostats haven't changed over the years, but without proper installation they will fail prematurely and cause all kinds of problems.

    So true, I have a 02' Blazer ZR2 4x4 in 2023 w/ 300k miles & she runs like new & gets sticker mpg.
However, in Summer Time down here in SE Texas, the 195° thermostat seems to keep the truck hot & getting hotter the longer I drive. I put a 180° in it, I'll get a Code, Temp Below Threshold in Winter but not in summer. A 190° seems to be good for my application. I change my thermostats once a year. They are cheap & will save you an engine

My new thermostat doesn't have a bleed hole the guy at the parts store told me to drill a small hole. Is this necessary? Or are they simply different designs and the new one can burp a different way?

Hi, nice explanation! May I kindly asking you to explain how does an electronically controlled thermostat works? The thermostat in my car has a 2 pins connector. The guy from the shop told me that is temperature sensor. But I have my doubts. Thanks!

Unfortunately Goss passed away in March in 2022, but I can answer your question. All thermostats are mechanical using wax thermostatic elements that expand when they get to the designated temp. The 2 pin connector that is sticking out of the thermostat housing, that is the metal or sometimes plastic piece that houses the thermostat internally, is your thermostat sensor that uses voltage to create a resistance that is sent through the wires to either your temperature gauge or warning light on some older cars to give you an accurate reading of the temperature. I hope this clears it up and have a wonderful day.

A thermostat has Zero to do with a car starting. You can have a thermostat in or not a thermostat at all & your vehicle will start.
It's something else, preventing a non start condition
