Literally saying “TikTok” will age this song in a few years but mindlessly scrolling, trend chasing and algorithms keeping us in bubbles is a genuine problem. Social media in whatever form or app has its benefits but it’ll always have it pitfalls

Most people lean one way or the other, but are not necessarily deeply liberal or deeply conservative. There are a lot of people who make the division seem deeper than it is. Political pundits are basically paid to do just that.
Revolution Radio was really good all the way through imo and has a lot of great songs, that album was within the last 10 years.

I think it's solid. Sonically a return to form. The bummer about green day for me is the disappearance of Mike's bass licks that permeate, even dominate, the old stuff. American idiot is where this started going away as they got "tighter". And in punk, unlike your mom, tighter is not always better. But I do like this song. Excited for the album

American Idiot is also where they started recording the guitars before the bass, because they learned that The Beatles did it. I think that has something to do with it. I remember Mike said "it doesn't fit our style now" but idk, it fit on the Trilogy imo

Dude, yes! Mike's subtle, nuanced bass playing is what always stood out to me on their 90s records. Insomniac was FILLED with these and it just pops. Cemented him as a top punk bassist, in my eyes. It's a shame we don't get that anymore
I totally agree about Mike's bass lines missing those dynamics, creative fluidity and just going for a fun wonder from AI. I'd also say similar about Tre's drumming choices as well, not being as wild and inventive in the fills and the nuanced hooks that would really contribute to a song. Sure sometimes, restraint can serve a song, (which they claimed) but had become detractive phase where it stopped songs being fresher and taking them up a level. Thankfully, I've noticed both the Mike and Tre bringing these elements back on some songs and even Billie Joe too in his playing and the overal band compositions, but I would love to hear even more and some extra experimentation really. But Saviors is a start and return there.

the main issue with the musical is that Armstrong was not the vocal director of it at all and so the actors are being taught how to sing the songs like a musical instead of being taught how to sing punk in a musical setting. just watching the st. jimmy performances where Armstrong plays jimmy and the ones where he doesn't really proves this.
Revolution Radio was good in my book, even the song Bang Bang is American Idiot level.
The punk/metal culture back when American Idiot came out was very anti-authority. Sometime in the last few years, the punk/metal culture has completely flipped and been very abiding by and not questioning authority. Present day punk/metal culture is cringe as fuck.

I don’t think it’s just that. I think punk/metal bands are trying to update their sound and their attitude to appeal to the younger generation, which doesn’t seem very anti-authority to begin with, and so the change in culture is more a product of that.

Punk today has manufactured attitude. I’m disappointed in both sides of the political spectrum and I miss the days that music was too. Seeing a band complain about Tik Tok while promoting their tik tok in the description of their video to me sums up why punk music doesn’t feel the same anymore.

The song is decent. I'd say a "safe" first single. It feels very 21st Century Breakdown and on style Green Day. Like it doesn't sound any different than anything else they've put out in the last 15 years. Right down to the main riff and all. I hope the album has some more energy and fun infused into it. That's what is so great about the new blink-182 album. Regardless, I'm looking forward to some new Green Day music.

yeah man, as a long-time fan since 1994, I gotta say that they've been getting pretty formulaic with their songwriting. Even the terrible last album that was I guess more experimental was still pretty formulaic as far as songwriting goes.

Seriously, I had to check the lyrics once I heard "Tik Tok". I was like, "That's not actually what they said, right?". It's one sure-fire way to make your song sound dated or out of context for future generations.
Yeah but the Tik tok bit is so passing it doesn’t matter. It’s a catch all for social media and is part of a larger lyrical thought. This is like saying people that talked about walkmans in the 90’s were cringe. It’s what it is. Things age.

I completely missed the tiktok line lmao. Well sonically it’s a lot more Green Day which I love we just gotta wait for the rest of the album. I didn’t think Father Of All was that bad either, clearly they tried something different and it didn’t work but I’ll never fault a band for experimenting with a new sound. Anyway hope the album is good.
As a stage IV terminal Green Day meat rider, Billie Joe's descent into boomerism is an area of interest for me, because I think it goes hand in hand with his crippling garage rock addiction. I mark Foxboro Hottubs as the beginning of the spiral, an otherwise innocuous garage rock side project in their massive arena rock era. It started to get worse during the trilogy era, as Finn points out with "Kill the DJ", but there's garage rock all over those records. I think that writing three full albums that ultimately weren't that well received led to a period of dormancy in Rev Rad, although the somewhat one-note political theming was back to American Idiot levels. As we know, Father of All was a complete descent into depravity, between the out of touch boomerism and the overwhelming 60s sound. I still hope that Father of All really was just cranked out to fulfill their Warner contract, but this doesn't give me a lot of hope. It sounds like the song writing process used to be far more collaborative, and I think that's what they need.
Edit: Upon 2nd or 3rd listen it's grown on me. I think the coming album has the potential to be exponentially better than Father of All, and prove that the latter was a fluke.
For the record, I liked a lot of the trilogy, Rev Rad, and even some of Father of All lmao
Yeah I probably agree with you about Foxboro Huttubs being the start of the spiral. I've always found it strange that after releasing one of their most successful albums ever they didn't take that momentum forward and instead wasted time on a mediocre side project. It's almost like they didn't know how to handle the success. I also think 21CB was pretty mediocre overall.
Not sure why it’s “boomerism” to criticize things when you get older, but I guess that’s what happens.
The trilogy was a painful time. Revolution had a few good songs. I couldn't make it through Father of All with even one full listen. I like the energy of this song, but the lyrics feel really cliche at this point. They need to reinvent themselves again. I want another album like Nimrod that was all over the place with different genres. That was also my first album so I'm a bit biased.

My opinions on Green Day albums as a random person on CZcams.
1,039/sloppy hours: Good album. It's not like hardcore punk but not like pop punk either. It sounds a bit like Operation Ivy (They covered Knowledge on this album) I would say this is definitely one of the best debut records I've heard. Although the production was kinda mid.
Kerplunk: Definitely a Top 5 Green Day album. 10/10. Wouldn't skip a track on this album. I know I'm wrong but I like their cover of "My Generation" better than The Who's to be honest (I love both). Production was better than 10,39/Sloppy hours although it's definitely not as good as their next albums.
Dookie: This album changed everything. This album popularized pop punk. This album was made for the teens with short attention spans and anger issues. Which is why the songs on this album are typically around 3 minutes and sound very angsty. I feel like many pop punk bands were inspired because of this album and it's definitely their best 90's album no doubt.
Insomniac: Sounds a lot like Dookie. Another 10/10 no skip album.
Nimrod: Yet another 10/10 no skip album. "Redundant" is one of the very rare Green Day tracks with guitar pedals in it and it's kinda an overlooked track. Don't give me wrong I love "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" but I feel like there are more better and more underrated tracks like "The Grouch", "Take Back", and "Scattered"
Warning: I personally like this album. However, It's not anything like their previous albums which is why it's underrated. Billie didn't want to make more pop punk tracks because he didn't like the sound of other late 90's pop punk bands. This album is a folk punk album and I would say it's my favorite folk punk album because a lot of folk punk singers sound like dying rats and I only like very few folk punk bands.
American Idiot: This album is the album that brought back Green Day's dying career. What I like about this album is how they bring up political issues. Most pop punk bands whine about some girl. While Green Day goes back to their hardcore roots and bring up issues with war. Specifically the Iraq War which at the time was controversial to talk about and could have risked the bands career.
21st Century Breakdown: This album is the reason why I hate when people say "I hate every album past American Idiot". This album is just an underrated American Idiot. Instead of the St. Jimmy/Jesus of Suburbia plot, we have the Christian and Gloria storyline. Instead of political anthems like "American Idiot" and "Holiday", we have more political anthems like "21 Guns" and "Know Your Enemy".
Trilogy: In my opinion, this is when Green Day started going downhill. Uno was a 10/10 album in my opinion and Tre had a few good tracks too. However, most of the tracks on Tre are kinda bad and Dos is probably the 2nd worst Green Day album. I don't like a single track on Dos. The trilogy is poorly written to me. They sound like a bunch of middle aged men with kids who act like teenagers.
Revolution Radio: This album reminds me of the term "Indian summer". An Indian summer is typically when the weather is cold but then it's warm for brief period before it becomes cold again. Imagine what I'm saying here is cold = bad and warm = good. The Trilogy was a cold album but then they released this very warm fresh out of the oven masterpiece. I really liked "Still Breathing". It's very confident and I'm gonna get through this type of anthem. It sounds a lot like Elton John's "I'm Still Standing" lyrically. I hope their next album while include tracks more like "Still Breathing". Because that track has personally been there for me when I was dealing with rough times.
Father of All: This album was basically like a rock version of Harry's House to me. It just sounds like goofy commercial 21 pilots type rock to me. Just like how Harry's House sounds like goofy commercial pop music.
Thoughts on the new single: It definitely sounds like a Halloween themed 21st Century again. I hope Green Day's new album definitely has more inspiration from their older tracks and continue to rock on with their genuine sound.

I will never forgive green day fans for breaking green day. Warning was so good and a logical trajectory for an aging and maturing punk band. But everyone hated it and they over corrected HARD and have never stopped.

I fell off after American Idiot with Green Day. It's really unfortunate but I 100% agree with you Finn Green Day has become the boomer democrat dad rock band. And any time Billie hears they get called punk or anything he flips out and rage rants on Twitter. Even this song just sounds like a rehash of the stuff they've been doing the last 10 years. I'm still holding out hope they come back to a true return to form tho. Maybe some day.

My main complaint about this song is that it's too slow, which would be OK if it had a slow song vibe, but if feels like it's a slow song because they can't play as fast as they used to.

honestly I think its a great and original song. You can get behind the hooks and melodies with just a single listen, very cool.

Same. I was OBSESSED with Green Day as a kid. Heard Basket Case when I was 8 years old and instantly became a super fan. I still liked Nimrod at the time but that was the first time I recognized that these guys weren't infallible gods lmao. Warning was terrible. American Idiot had some bangers that recaptured the old energy, songs like Letterbomb and Whatsername. it's been all pretty much downhill again since 21st Century Breakdown.
Also to say something about Billie…he kinda does this with Green Day but doesn’t seem to do it anywhere else. He literally like chills and drinks beer with us when he does his side projects…I’ll tell a small story and leave this here:
During the opening night of the musical, I randomly ran into one of Billies kids in the hallway. He was wearing a shirt that had an ad for a show that was his band, Emily’s Army, and Green Day’s most recent (very cool and btw Finn you should HELLA review all of Green Day’s and Billie Joe’s side projects, there’s a ton of them and a bunch of them are good) side project, “The Foxboro Hottubs”.
So I asked him, “when was this?” And he told me it’s tomorrow night. So I immediately go and tell the rest of the ppl who would wanna know this info and we all head to that venue to literallly just celebrate together, get fucked up all night, eat pizza, and have a great time.
The next night rolls around and everyone is STILL partying hard. I then watch the band arrive. Shortly after, they wheeled in. 2 dollys. Full of PBR tall boys. I think it was the equivalent of about 500 beers. There were only 300 of us in the audience.
At some point during this INSANE show at the Bowery Electric btw in New York City which is a TINY club. They start cracking beer and handing them out. We were almost all underage. No one gave a fuck. Billies guitar tech Hans was laughing outside about cuz everyone kept puking. It was REAL punk rock.
Oh, and Bill Murray and Joan Jett were there so got to say hi to them too. And the entire cast of the musical was there, and the show went on from midnight until 5 am. Billie got so hammered we ran out of covers and he just started playing Green Day.
So despite the Green Day YOU all get to see? Yeah thats not the sauce lolll. Billie is as punk as ever. You just have to go to a “Coverups” show in California, or you would have to catch him on one of his side project stints to really see it.
Also. Fucking a. At least Green Day can actually perform. All of their music. With no tracks. And no auto tune. Blink can’t even play Adam’s song, but I’m pretty sure Billie can do basket case just as well as he did 30 years ago.

But c'mon, you know it's a label thing to have an account on every social media. It's not like Billie Joe himself is tweeting those things and paying for the gold-verified account.

As for the TikTok line, it’s both cringe and relevant. I gather most of the audience here is older and not really on TikTok. But at the risk of sounding out of touch, TikTok is where the new generation lives. They don’t watch movies or shows. They get all of their entertainment from TikTok. It’s kinda sad that people only have the attention span for short clips. So it’s a fair criticism. But I digress.

Honestly, I kind of think that this song is their least liberal-agenda pushing song in awhile. They're talking about how chasing money and social media fame is making people numb and hollow. I think that's a message most people, regardless of their politic stance, could get behind. Just my take.
