  • Pathfinder: Kingmaker Definitive Edition has hit PS4 today. Here is my Pathfinder: Kingmaker PS4 review - I do my 5 Step review of this isometric classic RPG based on Pathfinder D&D - this is a good game, but not great - looks like Baldur's Gate, but not for everyone.
    Pathfinder: Kingmaker looks to be getting a sequel Pathfinder game at some point based on the success of Kingmaker. It's a good RPG with great story, interesting mechanics and Pathfinder Kingmaker on PS4 is obviously strongly based on the elements of the table top adventure.
    This is Roy McCoy - the Real Roy McCoy

      @@Hohlopidor In both cases I would seriously URGE you to get the PC versions. Some games are better on console, others PC.
      As for specific reasons: Pathfinder has a LOT of spells & skills. On the PC version you have the hotkeys, & another area on the left side of the screen that you can open up for even more individual abilities & spells for each character.
      With regard to Wasteland 3, it's MUCH easier to target "background" items in PC WL3 then the console counterpart (exploding barrels, mines, etc). It's even easier to get the drop on foes in the game compared to the console counterpart, at least for myself it was.

      It only seems less daunting because your YEARS of playing the tabletop RPG are clouding the memories of how you were not over burdened with everything at first. Tabletop RPG’s with a decent DM/GM can slowly be learned over months. The PC iteration shoves everything down your throat at once.

    The in depth nature of this game is definitely a plus for me. I can totally understand what you are saying though but let's be honest games like this are for a very particular niche so I guess it's something you either enjoy or you don't. I'm just hoping it's more stable than the ps4 version of pillars of eternity 2 on the ps4 that to me at least is still unplayable with 2 minute load times between every area and even room and the crashes and save file corruption, a shame as its a wonderful game but needs work. I'm definitely picking up pathfinder however and thank you for this review 👍

      matthew ryan if it’s got loading times like PoE2 I will be avoiding it lol, I consider myself a patient man but I gave up on PoE2 as I was spending more time looking at loading screens then actually playing the game!

    • @RoyMcCoy
      @RoyMcCoy  Před 3 lety +1

      The load times are better than two minutes, so you won't have to kill too much time between action - I think for PoE2 you could pop and make a coffee. I totally agree it suits some people and not others. I liked it, but I wasn't a fan of feeling lost, despite the tutorials - when I finally started to get it I really enjoyed it. It does seem like the developer is quite responsive, so I'm hopeful those crashes and bugs will get fixed ASAP!

    • @RoyMcCoy
      @RoyMcCoy  Před 3 lety +1

      It's not as bad as that - so don't panic! The load times are there, but they're not the worst I've ever seen - and I've played a lot of crap loading times and crashes (joys of reviewing games before they officially release).

Kingmaker does a pretty good job of showing that, but the actual game has even more options. Currently I've been playing pathfinder 2nd edition, which has been out a little over a year. Again, more complicated than 5e, but far more customization even in these early stages of its release. 5e is still fantastic if youre looking to get into table top. Lots of options and online resources to get you started. Finding a group is always hard. There are a ton of online communities though, especially for 5e

      I take it you’re on console? PS4? It’s really clunky on the console - I know exactly where you are in the game. I’ll be totally honest, I had issues with this. I ended up leaving that area, assembling my team, and levelling them up on the map screen. Now, I know they’ve patched it since I reviewed this, so whether they’ve fixed it, I’ll double check. You have to select the character you want to upgrade - make them your party leader. Then go into their character page. You have to scroll through to one of the other pages. And at the bottom it tells you which button to press to level up. The process of allocating points is clunky, and you have to rinse and repeat for each character. Let me know if this helps. I’ll have another look and give you a step by step process of youre on PS4 if it’s still not clear.

    It seems to be a recuring theme among tabletop versions of prewritten Pathfinder campaigns to be overly difficult for the party. Maybe it's because Pathfinder's core fan base is made up of min-maxers and power gamers, and I don't mean that in any negative light.
    So, I don't think there's anything wrong with having to play Pathfinder: Kingmaker, the video game, on easy difficulty.

    Three things about Pathfinder:
    -35 seconds is a huge 20sec increase from the previous cooldown of 10. He can no longer swing away like a spiderman but it’s now a one time get out of jail free card X amount of distance. Use only begins with a drone to swing on or a jump pad. 25 seconds is reasonable.
    -kingmaker is an interesting skin. Servin MRVN seems to be the one of choice.
    -The newest season introduced a new passive. The zip line gun gets a 10 second cooldown from 120 to 60 seconds WHEN you use a survey beacon. Essentially meaning you have to endure 6 rings for quicker zips, the risk doesn’t fully match the reward and at most times, it’s hard to rotate through every beacon with crafting materials around, devotions, treasure packs, and that pesky enemy team with volt smgs.
    In conclusion I hope needed changes and adjustments are completed accordingly. I don’t want most of us holding our breath for the seventh iteration in November!

      I love a challenge, but I think my issues with the load times, the porting issues and crashing and some of the quality of life features missing like a moveable camera and running combined with that early save corruption made the fact that it wasn't clear at times what was going on much more frustrating. I love tough and tricky games and often (if I'm not reviewing them) I'll stick them on hard. I also like games that make me experiment - but there's a difference between hard and confusing for me, when things are unclear it can make a game tough to start and fall in love with. I had a similar feeling with Fairy Tail, but that relates more to the fact that you needed to know years of backstory before playing.

The reason many games are trash nowadays is because devs are trying to cater to both pc and console crowds. They are completely different. I believe diablo 3 would’ve been just as good as 2 if the devs didn’t have console in mind as well. Diablo 2 was a masterpiece and never got dumbed down to fit the console crowd.

      @@henryseldon6077 Ironically enough, I'm the other way round - I'm a massive PS4 gamer. I only just got my first gaming PC and while I enjoy it, I still prefer life on my PS4. I want to say, by the way, that I genuinely appreciate your feedback as I can learn and improve from it!
      I did indeed get the patch, and it made it a hell of a lot better. What console are you playing it on? I think actually, with that question, you've hit the nail on the head. I have always been a console gamer, because I hated patching. Back in the day, the facility to patch didn't exist on console, but now, especially with this generation of console it's really nightmarish - not that I don't appreciate fixing things, my question is more - why should single player console games need fixing on week one?! I've heard the argument that it saves money and time on QandA, but it's really frustrating. I've actually been working on a video called 'the evils of patching'.
      The thing is, when we review a game, we get a code from the developers and it's the 1.0 version. I once reviewed a game that you couldn't get off the start screen - I couldn't even score it until a patch came. The problem is, as soon as a patch comes a long, a review is outdated. So what I reviewed is somewhat different to what you're playing now. (I hope). My review, though, was not as savage as some. I enjoyed the story, the combat options I felt were good - even if it did seem a bit frustrating on version 1.0 with the lack of hits - these guys were a bit more savage about the combat than I was (they also didn't much seem to like the story, which I did): thenerdstash.com/pathfinder-kingmaker-definitive-edition-review-flawed-fun/
      I gave it a 7/10 cause it's a good fun game, but from what I've seen and heard - the problems were the same issues that had already been fixed ages before on the PC version. So, if they were aware... why not fix before launch? I tried it on the PC, cause it showed me where the PS4 version is hopefully heading after they've ironed out the bugs - in fact, without those crashing elements I'd have probably gone to 8 and not found it so overwhelming.

    I'm sorry but you can't have an in-depth review in 9 minutes, and this is certainly not an in-depth one ;-) I don't understand why you'd have to spend time on CZcams etc. "trying to understand the full extent of the game", because it's pretty straightforward, and as every single CRPG, there are wikies to summarize the information (perhaps if you took the time to elaborate?). "Designed for PC" yes, agreed, I don't undestand why they'd port that to console, it's indeed a different audience. Your main gripe is "I had no idea what I was doing at times / game doesn't inform me"... Firstly, from your review it doesn't seem that you played it very long, and it's normal to be a bit lost at the beginning of a new CRPG. Secondly, the journal is very thorough and even shows the type of quests and their progress, there are also indications on the towns about which quests are awaiting, I find this is already more than enough. The problem is that nowadays, people expect a pointer "what to do next" and an arrow on NPCs that give quests or allow to progress in them, like in Ubisoft's games. And there is even a map... personally I find it's already way too much pointers. Paying attention to the narrative should already give all the information the player needs. Let the people actually *think* again. "Tutorial over-complicated"? May I ask if you are actually familiar with RPGs, because I simply can't recognize the game you describe at this point. Or perhaps you were unlucky to test it on the new Definitive edition, which probably needs some ironing out. I had zero freeze or problem so far (but I stopped a little before this last update), and haven't lost any saved games.
    My advice: have a look at the Pathfinder rulebook (1st edition) to get familiar with this sytem, which allows for more freedom in character evolution than D&D, wait for the game to get some hotfixes, and take the time to play it enough to give a review. Then take the time to elaborate and justify your claims, because otherwise we can hardly acknowledge them.

    • @RoyMcCoy
      @RoyMcCoy  Před 3 lety

      Hey there! Thanks for your comment. I think the biggest issue I had was the mistake of playing this game on the console. The version I reviewed of this game was the PS4 Definitive Edition, so I came at it as a console gamer. I know it's been on PC for a while, but there will be a number of people who have never heard of this before, and pick it up for the first time on console. In my opinion, this game is perfect for PC - and didn't work amazingly on console.
      Yes, there were a number of quality of life issues that I felt didn't work. For example, a lack of running and the ability to spin camera (I believe this last one isn't an issue on the PC version). The other problem was the freezing and crashing that happened to much. Now, I got the press release press code to review, but the amount of times I had to reboot the game made it difficult to get a momentum while playing it. Then, there was the issue my save corrupted - which meant I have to start again. A lot of the footage in the video was from early on, cause I hate ruining stories for people and I put a fair few hours into the game, but I'd imagine that being a PC fan would have put more into it because the game has been available there for a lot longer.
      The more I played this game, the better it got and more I understood. I think my feeling of being lost didn't come from a need for a pointers - actually I understood what I had to do and where I had to go quite easily. Somethings I felt unprepared for, like the swarm, but I knew what I had to do - I just couldn't cause I didn't have anyone with fire magic. And yes, there are times I needed a WIKI - which is pretty easy to access on a PC, but on a PS4 it's quite clunky, or you need other devices and before long your set-up of an open laptop to check something is a bit clunky. I imagine pausing the game on PC, opening a new window, reading, and then going back to it would be a lot easier.
      So, what did I learn? Never play these games on console when I have a decent gaming PC - I didn't make the same mistake with Wasteland 3 (I'm still playing it which is why my review isn't up yet). Sat two metres from a TV playing a new version of an established game with a controller made me feel (lost might not be the right word) overwhelmed and frustrated.

    • @no_fb
      @no_fb Před 3 lety +1

      @@RoyMcCoy I understand better where those feelings are coming from, sorry if my comment was a bit patronizing. Also, I suppose that playing with a game controller takes more time than with the keyboard & mouse combo, especially for sorting out and trading items. You're right, perhaps the "spirit" on PC is also different and people don't mind putting the game on hold from time to time and checking up the rules, or looking for help. While on console, it's more awkward and people want to stay cozy with all the necessary guidance provided by the game.
      The game is complex, like Pillars of Eternity and some others, it probably expects a higher commitment from the players than most other games. And unlike many games, it doesn't hold the player's hand very much (still, you'll find a lot of info in Lizy's journal). Don't give up, after a little while, past this learning curve - and perhaps once it gets back to a stable version, you'll enjoy a rewarding experience :-)
      The camera is the same on PC but there is a mod to get higher room flexibility, and rotation! ("bag of tricks" is especially good, it includes these camera mods and many others). I think you can use it with a controller too... but I have no idea if you can install it on a console. I hope you can enjoy it anyway!

The AI sucks, enemies will fail to notice someone who shoots at them and then backs away forcing me so step back in front of the entire firing squad, after casting a spell my mage will just walk into melee combat for no good reason instead of waiting for a new command like she should and I can't choose who disables traps so when the best in the party is low on HP, I can't send in the second best for just in case it fails and goes off.
    The RNG is garbage, I've tracked all of my rolls over 4 hours of combat play and 60% of them were below 7 on the d20 with only 13% being above 13
    Then there's the smaller things like, sorting inventory is more complicated than it needs to be, which would all be passable as it's their first game but at this point I'm like "Have they even play another Isometric RPG to see what's been done before?"
    For reference I've been playing D&D since 2nd, I've played Pathfinder 1 and 2, and many other tabletop RPGs that are not really all that comparable. I've play every Isometric RPG I could get my hands on. I have a lot of experience to draw on and it really just feels like the people who made this have none when it comes to the video game side of things.

      I agree with everything you said - this game, on the surface, looked amazing - and I found it as frustrating and confusing as all hell - no, I don't need a pointer hinting at everything - but I don't want to spend my day on my phone in a wiki. That was just the start - the RNG was nightmarish and some of the features like the lack of camera angle changing and AI and the inventory made it feel more like a BETA - I got angrier the more I played this.

    It is a bad game because not enough fun. Instead buy Path of Eternity 2, Divinity Original Sin 1 and 2, and Baldur's Gate 3 next year.

      Pillars of eternity 2 is a buggy mess and damn near requires a ssd. Can't recommend that to anyone.

      @@demora714 SSD on PS4 (Pro) does not help that much, something around 4-5 secs less lolz...

      Yeah - it can be a bit heavy good and the in-depth nature of it can sap the fun out of it a bit. What sorts of games do you like?
