Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is an isometric turn-based tactical tactical role-playing game developed and published by Owlcat Games set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. The game was released for Windows PC, macOS, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and Series S in December 2023.
Similar to prior Owlcat games (Pathfinder: Kingmaker), Rogue Trader is an isometric role-playing video games, heavily utilizing the d100 TTRPG system. The player controls a party of six characters, including their own through ground combat and social interactions. It features a turn-based combat system and an isometric perspective. One of the game's distinguishing features is its emphasis on realm-building, with the player's decisions as a Rogue Trader affecting the rest of the gameplay as they build their space empire. Space combat is also present. The game also supports a cooperative multiplayer mode.

As a huge fan of your content, a huge fan and creator of Warhammer 40k stuff AND as a voice actor in the game - this video makes me happy. Only if you opt to include Heinrix in your party would I be even happier 😅👀
Heinrix is best boy
Thank you for your hard work!
Please voice act the whole game 😭😭😅
I love how Pillars of Eternity brought back CRPGs back into the market. I’ve spent way too much time as a kid with old Infinite Engine games.
Close. Divinity Original Sin 1 already did that a year before Pillars of Eternity came out.
I can only speak for myself but in my case it was 100% Pillars @@utisti4976
@@utisti4976 shadowrun returns was out before both too I think
Shadowrun Returns started the comeback.
Pillars went into Kickstarter in 2012 or 2013 I believe and at the time generated the most buzz also in part it was being done by Obsidian. It was marketed explicitly as a throwback to the Infinity Engine games.
Focusing on Turn based instead of doing both Like in Pathfinder was a great choice of owlcat
That's probably just because that was the best way to do TTRPG ruleset they are basing the game off of. Although I do agree, I'm not a big fan of real time with pause, but if you try to play Pathfinder as purely turn based, the games take like 20 years to complete.
@@fareflight2029Lol, yea. Turnbased for difficult fights, rtwp for trash fights
For sure. I tried pathfinder and couldn’t do the combat. This game, although dense with lore and reading, since it has turn based I’m really enjoying it
@@xavierpeele4048 Both Pathfinder games have turn based combat tho?
Honestly the only good decision from Owlcat in a while.
If you're a 40k fan of any nature, this game is a gem. If you're a fan of CRPGs, this is a little more focused on combat mechanics/building your party than some others, but it's a great game overall.
You also have combat between spaceships (voidships), as well as a planet management system.
How far were you in the game when you made this comment?
@@ArminiusSage About 2/3s. I think it all still stands up well.
I didn't like turn based games, then I played DOS2 and I loved it, now I'm with BG3 and Rogue Trader, this one is really worth trying
Cool story
DOS2 absolutely shook my perspective on gaming and exploring new genres. Amazing game, cant get enough of CRPGs now.
the thing about this game that i love - is that alot of battles seem so daunting and winnable when like 20 enemies appear - but the skills and abilities are so smart that always intuitive ways to deal with swarms!
Was kind of worried how Rogue Trader would stack up after playing so much BG3, and gotta say, it just scratches a completely different itch both narratively and gameplay-wise. Very good year for gamers.
This is definitely my experience. Just started playing RT after finishing 2nd play through on BG3 and I am loving it. Put 250 hours into Pathfinder WotR just before picking up BG3. It’s a great time to be a CRPG fan.
This first tutorial battle was the hardest one for me. Put me in panic mode as I thought “oh no this games going to be super hard” but as it turns out it gets easier as you level up and understand what’s going on.
I love the fact that friendly fire is so prevelant.
It is hilarious to me watching Argenta mowing down xenos filth, and "accidently" hitting Idira in the crossfire xD
I am split between whether it was Pathfinder Wotr or Divinity Original Sin 2 that got me into the CRPG genre. I used to think it was tacking until I saw both on sale for good deals. Divinity OS2 was like a nice introduction into the genre, while Pathfinder Wotr made me like gave me a newfound attraction to D&D and reading ling dialogue. I used to be your average FPS gamer. So I am familiar with Pathfinder Wotr so I might play Rogue Trader
DOS2 got me into cRPG.
Pathfinder keeps me in cRPG.
I've been passively interested in the genre since Balder's Gate 2
Go back and experience Fallout 1&2 as well.
It was Baldur's Gate 2 that got me into Crpg. I played the original sins before but they never clicked with me. I think writing had everything to do with it.
@@HitoshuratdnGonna have to try BG2 some day.
I bought this finally and played for 6 hours straight last night, it is pretty incredible.
If you liked this, I think you should try Wasteland 3. It's not that well-known unfortunately, but I think it's the most underrated CRPG on the market.
It's made by InXile Entertainment, which is founded and run by some of the creators of the OG Fallout, and they were bought by Microsoft a few years ago. It's honestly a fantastic CRPG, and I wish it was better marketed so more people would know about it.
Wasteland 3 is a god damn masterpiece. Better than baldurs turd.
Wasteland 3 is the game that got me into CRPGS
Wasteland 3 is good and if you were into classic Fallout is a must play. Closest successor to it imo (which is funny since Fallout was a successor to the original Wasteland game)
@@yupperdude1 while Baldur's Gate 3 is a really good game, I do think that Wasteland 3 is better overall.
@@D.a.v.e786 me too
This game is a lot of fun. Just completed act 2. It has great immersion and the combat is interesting . Problems with game are load screen aggro, bugs, and some characters could be more fleshed out (voice acting is great but not enough). It is a fun game tho and having your character super buffed destroy all enemies on screen is a lot if fun. its awesome when things go right. Hope they get off Unity engine so they can do more mechanics and features within the game. Would be 100% down for another 40K CRPG or DLC.
A larian Warhammer game would be sick
Rogue Trader is pretty amazing if you're into isometric CRPG's. Already have 80+ hours and I just got to act 3.
I hear its like 100+ hours
This game is actually amazing, but I'm going to wait til it's more polished. Also, really wish they went all in on voice acting but I'll live.
Most fun I’ve had with a new game in a long time. Even though it’s a sponsored video, the game deserves one! Hope they fix the bugs.
Patiently waiting for Spacemarine to drop. Never played 40k anytning what are some of the best I should give a try?
If you like big capital ship combat then the two Battlefleet Gothic Armada games are great. If you don’t like big slow battles…skip em.
Play the first Space Marine game. The one coming out in 2024 is the sequel. Also try the Dawn of War trilogy - those are all amazing.
I've been really enjoying Darktide. The developers have done a really admirable job of bringing the game up to a really fun and playable state after a less-than-stellar launch
@eamondanieu8272 was just playing Darktide for the first time in MONTHS last night. They definitely spruced up the game, it's a blast.
If You want to go into turn base combat into Warhammer 40 k ? Only one title - Warhammer 40 k Mechanicus. This game is fantastic and music? Goooosh, top ! 💪💯 Have fun !
I tried this. It was like playing a nicely decorated spreadsheet.
Been playing for the last week. It's excellent. Ive got Hecata sniping for insane crit chance/damage. She's a beast if you build her right
Game was clearly written by folks who have a lot of love for the setting. If you like 40k lore/crpgs this is an easy buy. All the companions are likeable. Wish i could take them all
Hell ya they clearly know what they are talking about
If you like Rogue Trader then try Chaosgate. Chaosgate is a hidden gem. It focuses exclusively on combat, but is a turn-based tactical game with RPG elements. You play as the most elite Astartes chapter, The Grey Knights, who are essentially the Navy Seals of Space Marines.
Chaos gate is dammmn good. Shame it was only nurgle; I’d have love to fight demons of khorne as well as slanessh
I am absolutely loving this game so far. The combat is better than WotR too.
Ive never played wotr for his combat. Its terrible (IMO) but the characters, writing, the adventure path was worth the suffering
@@teeman7137 imo the combat isn't bad not great either, but one thing that jumps the experience is the power fantasy of your chosen mythic abilities
Thanks for the video, love WH40 + Horus Heresy so very tempted by this game.
This game is amazing and I’m having a blast but it definitely makes me want a warhammer fantasy crpg. I think that would be very interesting.
Yes absolutely 💯
What’s your thoughts on it two months later?
Unfortunately the game is basically unfinished right now it's almost impossible to finish game due to so many game breaking bugs
Toybox bro, it'll make life easier (if you're playing on PC)
Ignite is not an "officer" ability. It's a psyker ability (pyromancy). Important to know there's a difference when leveling up and choosing skills and talents.
The level-up UI is so messy that it's easy to make that mistake. I've been playing for 20 hours now and I'm only just getting the hang of which skills belong to which origin/class. There's just a list of them without any breaks or sub-headings. It's tedious trying to create a build with that.
@@t-pnaminami3808There's a filter at the top of the list that includes differentiating between archetype/generic/origin/psyker talents.
Loving it!
Good to see u here mate
Whats your character build?
I nevere played Pathfinder games (on my to-do list still), but I absolutely love this game. The Warhammer feel is as great as in Darktide, combat and mechanics are insanely deep, just one level up took me like 30 minutes. Story also seems to be interesting so far.
The game is good, but there are too many bugs. In some places the main quest is bugged so that the game is literally impossible to complete without a mod that allows you to restart triggers in quests manually. They rolled out a patch that fixed some of the problems but created about the same number of new ones. But in general, I’m glad that the Russian game dev is still alive even in these turbulent times.
not anymore they fixed everything
@@user-vv3zc9il9kno. Chapter 3 and 4 is still bugfest, there are even bugs in the main story.
Abelard has charge ability which is an extra attack you can get in alongside your regular attack - so you may want to set him in a position from where he has the extra 2 spaces required to be able yo activate that ability.
The Noble Character class also is essentially a class that's all about buffing your Guys and Feeding them extra Turns and attacks. It's possibly with high momentum to have Albert or even Argenta wipe an entire enemy squad in 1 or 2 turns if your positioning is good
For the Emperor!!!!!!!!
"I know I'm PAID to say this, but I promise I believe what I'm saying" sure buddy
Abelard, like this video for me.
"Of course, Lord Captain."
That pic made me wish there was fanart of cutesy rogue trader girl telling Big Uncle Abelard to introduce her
I'll never forget when i got my first 40K Rule Book (4th edition) back in 6th grade. My life was never the same since
i love this game but im also annoyed at owlcat - they try very, very hard to polish the first couple acts here, and they were pretty successful for chapter 1 and chapter 2, but beginning in chapter 3 the cracks begin to show and chapter 4 has some downright broken quests, lots of items where the name is just "melee" or "blaster", npc's attacking their own allies in combat for no reason, npc's popping back into existence when they should be dead, and player companions that stay in the party even though they should have left. I have always enjoyed owlcat's work, but frankly they tend to release things while the later parts of the game are still in an early access sort of state, and hope that the small subset of players who get that far will bug test it for them so they can finish it in time for the majority of players who are still slowly getting through the earlier chapters.
Not surprised that's the most polished as that's where they got the most feedback and testing during Alpha and Beta. I was surprised it was releasing this year and by the state it's in it should've gotten another couple months just to polish it at least. They wanted those holiday season sales though.
well, this video is just promotion!
are you gona do full review? would love it.
I had a lot of fun with this. But I wish there were more Autoguns, Autopistols, and Shotguns because my Crimelord Officer Rogue Trader usually ran an Autopistol or Shotgun Pistol and a one hand Knife or Sword in one slot and an Autogun or Shotgun in the other. Having a wider variaty of weapons suiting my character would have been great and there are many Autoguns, Shotguns, or Autopistols common in the region which don't appear in the game.
I'm curious about why you didn't talk about ship combat though and I would definitely like more Prow and Dorsal ship weapons and wouldn't mind more Broadside ship weapons.
Yum the cookie looked good. Oh yeah this game looks great too!
played on release and just came back.
I will say the game is WAY more polished now and a ton of fun/value. Cant wait for the planned DLC
What happened to the SM7B?
I don’t really know anything about Warhammer, but this game has me intrigued since I’m so looking forward to playing boulders gate three
The game is really good, I've played around 100h already. It's not completely bug free and polished tough, so if you are like me, go play it, it's a great game, but if you are more prone to frustration or will make a single playthrough and put it aside, I'd say wait a bit.
Let it slow cook
Interesting, in my fight I had the bridge crew help me. Probably because I saved some soldiers before.
Also in this fight it would be good to take care of the cultist first, because the demon eats them and get HP back.
I am 70h in, it is a lot of fun if you like challenging battles and reading.
I would love to play this game, I just heard that it's a little rough on consoles at the moment. I'm gonna wait until it's better, and then I will definitely be getting this game.
same here
Usually a,wise thing with Owlcat, there games are great and this is the best one so far but they take awhile to smooth out. Om pc so far I haven't had any glaring issues but Don't know about console..
@via_negativa6183 My usual plan is to wait a month after a game comes out to see the reception. It's hard to follow at times but has treated me well. From reviews, I have seen that the controls are janky, and the tutorials are turned off by default. Nothing that time can't fix.
@@1rotzy I started playing the game about a week ago (bought it in december) and I can hardly think about anything else, lmao.
I have not been able to stop playing this game. BG3 lost me in Act1.. unfortunately. But this wont let me go! Its so good, at 60+ hours already and still in act 2 i think? Unreal to think what’s ahead
Bg3 lost me in act 3. But I can't put this game down it's fascinating..
I lost interest in BG3 in act 3.
...how? Sorry, but I think there's something wrong with you if you like CRPGs and don't like BG3.
Rogue trader is awesome, so is BG3.
@@Nereosis16As much as i love BG3 for bringing crpg to the mainstream, i don't think that game has a good narrative. The quality of the writing started to drop with each act you play.
@@fitzviandraduivenab2790kinda agree
Already got 50h in, awesome to get a good crpg for 40k!
My respect for Luke just skyrocketed!

9:30 thought we wouldnt spot that eggo waffle huh.
You already played when they contacted you and you did not even finish the prologue?
Looks very good ! Nice video btw!
If you complete the last mission does the game end or is it still playable?
09:26 Wild plate appeared!
This game looks sick!
Thanks for your fine review.
I loved it, as I’m very interested in this game and know nothing about it.
By coincidence I’m a cat owner/lover too!
Greetings from Antwerp!
I saw this game and was interested but knowing Warhammer somewhat I was kind of scared off because the games are so deep mechanically. Watching this I actually made the decision to get this game. Thanks :)
This needs to get number one in awards
I love WH40K, I love RPGs and I love turn-based strategy. This is a must-have!
i got out sort of took me 20 years though, i still read the books to get my hit, and when i started regressing like a junkie i redirected it to malifaux lol
Review your cats!!! 😂
Love the game. They need to do one for Warhammer Fantasy (Not the Age of Sigmar shite, though).
You have a pretty rad studio.
Darktide is better, and the new drip is.... beautiful
The Soundtrack also slaps.
I really need to get into warhammer. It is starting to garner attention and looks interesting.
It's vast. Legitimately a ton of stuff to dive into without even touching miniatures or the tabletop game at all.
@@CrazyxEnigma The miniatures are the best part. The only problem is that it can be a *_very_* expensive hobby. So much fun tho, and as someone with dyslexia painting all those tiny figures really helps train my mind to focus on details. It's incredibly therapeutic in a lot of different ways. Like Zen.
Fallout 2 was my first foray into crpg games. I know its kind of basic these days, but it was incredible at the time. I chose Rogue Trader over Baldurs Gate 3 this pay check, and im very very happy. Love 40ks universe.
I'm always a fan of trying CRPGs that aren't tethered to the d20 system. Nothing wrong with the d20 system, BG2 is still one of my all time favorites, I like trying new stuff that tries going outside the box for CRPGs. Doesn't happen a whole lot, seems like.
The explanations for everything is awesome. This _game_ looks awesome. I'm glad GW decided to do something like this.
I’m enjoying it more than BG3. I think setting and doing justice to that settings is a huge draw.
I wish Elder Scrolls had more games in other genres by other studios.
I would love an Elder Scrolls spinoff by Larian.
@@utisti4976 Wish there were more ES games in general, seems that Warhammer has the most prolific game production out of any IP.
@@funasylumstudio The only thing that could match it was early 2000's LucasArts Star Wars games. It seemed like there was a new one coming out every year.
I love this game so far, I'm just sad that the game isn't fully voice acted. It's really hard to read so much with my dyslexia 😅
just an friendly reminder while the combat and written dialogue is awesome i finished the game on hard difficulty, had around 4-5 companion quests unable to be resolved. If you can look past the bugs and accept owlcat design choices this game an legit 9 or even 10 if even slightly into 40k
Did you use toy box?
Also 9/10? You sure you finished the game?

How did your playthrough go? I just got to chapter 3
That Chaos spawn fight is classic Owlcat, they literally troll you in their games.
I died too, then caught on to what was happening and defeated it with taking any damage at all on the next try.
It's one of the aspects I don't really enjoy about their games, especially when you forget to save, you get blindsideded by some convoluted mechanic that is not explained and is outside of the set boundaries, ie the Chaos Spawn's ability to attack you outside of It's turn, yes its a (reaction) but there is absolutely no reference it can do that.
Tbf, you can just rightclick enemies and see their specific effects and abilities. The Chaos Spawn is just the first fight where it really wants you to actually pay attention to that.
@@magni5648true, but as a beginner to a new system the words are jargon, I did read his abilities, I didn't understand them until i saw what it did.
This is seriously like Baldur's Gate 3 All over again but even Darker and Good decision mean bad.. bad decision are Fukked up XD
YASSSSS, my prayers had been heard by all the gods of the void. First CRPG in world of WH40k is actually GOOD. Praise the Emperor! Such a relief!
Will you do a baldurs gate 3 critique
I want to play it but combat encounter keeps bugging and becoming unplayable
Lovely cats!
CRPG with GUNS? sign me up
Hey Luke
Appreciate the content. What are your continuing thoughts on the game? Did the fun last?
Its a neat game, but give the devs a month or two to polish it
Starting with Act3 it becomes a buggy mess: bugged quests, FPS problems, wrong item names, awkward cutscenes abnd much more.
All those things will be most likely fixed in the future, since they already released a few patches and are currently working on the second big patch of December
If you like WH40K or CRPGs you should give it a try
But right now its better to way a bit, because all those bugs might ruin your experience
That cat is gorgeous 😊
If it's not online, I'll try it out.
I’ll come back in a year and play it when the game actually releases. Anyone who plays in the meantime is just bug testing.
hope you try ready or not soon
Someone please listen to Luke or that cat fart at tbe 9:18 mark 😂😂😂😂😂 I died
It's so refreshing to get an anctual good 40k video game. Since Dawn of War II, most 40k video games are just shit cash grabs. Very nice to have a fleshed out 40k RPG. It's like 1 in 10, 40k games that are actually good lol
In recent years the track record has been pretty good, excluding mobile gaming trash of course.
newbie to warhammer. I just got releams of sigma i’m going to try. and I want space marines 2. is this worth it as well. very very newbie to this warhammer stuff
i am not fan of 40k universe not that i dont like it i just didnt get in to it YET ... and this was only my second CRPG after Baldurs Gate 3 .... and man this game surprised me soo much, i got so immersed in this game and i had so much fun ... if you are fan of 40k or CRPG games or you just gamer who like deep RPG games you have to play this game and sadly i feel like it is not talked about this game enough ...
Warhammer games are often strategy, arpgs, shooters or crpgs. What I’m wondering is why after dozens of Warhammer games they never tried to make even one modern rpg. I know how much like a casual I sound to purists right now but still the world and lore of both warhammer fantasy and warhammer 40k is rich enough to make a fantastic mass effect, dragon age or the witcher style rpg. A game like that would also bring in a larger audience which the henry cavill warhammer universe will most likely bring like the netflix show did for the witcher. My favorite Warhammer game is space marine and at least we get space marines 2 which looks crazy but I’d really like if Warhammer games diversified a little from strategy. There’s so much potential here.
"modern rpg?" You mean action rpg? Check out the WH40K Dawn of War series. Particularly 1 and 2. They're not action rpgs, but DOW2 is fast paced and involves planning/strategy and a small bit of character building and loot. You may enjoy it. Another one would be Hired Gun: Necromunda, which is more like a Boomer Shooter.
The screen tear needs to be fixed before I play
Unfortunately, like with the previous Owlcat games this one also has big problems on xbox. I would delay the purchase for a year as it usually takes them some time to patch it.
I want to get into Warhammer, but then I see how much of everything it has and then I decide that I won't...
Been enjoying Rogue Trader and weed. 😂🤣 It good
Will I be scarred like when I played XCOM 2 and my 98% chance to hit misses or the game spawns insane enemies on the map when you discover them around the corner? 😂. Just asking
Yes to hit chance.
I was a huge fan of turn based RPGs starting with Ultima IV back in the 80s. But by around 2010 I was totally tired of them, not because of the turn based method, but because of the slow, drawn out animations you have to watch one after the other turning every fight into a 30 minute anim fest. I stopped playing them for this reason. Until I discovered cheat engine just for the sake of the speedhack and speeding up the combat 7.0 times faster. Now I love turn based games again :P
I love this game the writing is amazing. Pc gamer are a joke. Recommend the rogues delight reshade on the nexus it really makes the game shine.
PC Gamer got upset it wasn't a Mass Effect Bioware game which is especially stupid and petty considering that same person reviewed WOTR.
How has your experience been with bugs?
yes
It's still ridden with bugs but no gamebreaking bugs so far, just funny visual stuff. This game is by far the best Owlcat release yet
