A brief introduction about who I am and what I do.
00:13
Start with Yourself: Before choosing a specialty, reflect on who you are, your preferences, and the things that come most naturally to you.
00:42
Procedural vs Non-Procedural: Know that there are many procedural specialties in medicine that do not necessarily involve operating on people. Think about which you'd prefer and seek exposure when possible.
01:56
When considering multiple options for a significant life decision, I have found it helpful to use a decision-making matrix, to decide.
02:51
Feeling like a well-rounded physician was personally important to me, and anesthesiology is a field that lends itself to a broad knowledge base. This is the first reason why I gravitated toward this specialty.
03:27
Anesthesiology is one of many procedural specialties in medicine that engages your mind as much as your technical skill. I enjoy the process of going from a novice to a beginner at a challenging skill, so it felt natural to me to work with my hands.
03:59
Going through medical school, I found that the days I enjoyed the most were days when I was moving around, working with my hands, and not feeling stuck behind a computer screen. As such, going into a field with minimal note-taking really appealed to me
04:34
Personally, I felt eager to be a practicing physician, so one thing I considered was residency programs that took less than 5 years to complete.
05:11
Fellowship training is something I wanted to consider once residency is over. All residency programs have varying lengths of fellowship training, but anesthesiology has one-year fellowships across the board. Check out the video @MaxFeinsteinMD made with the link above!
06:31
In life-or-death situations, I saw anesthesiologists be an integral part of the medical team, providing life-sustaining treatment. This is something that genuinely appealed to me, and I wanted to be a part of my career.
07:41
Anesthesiologists are some of the most hardworking people on the perioperative care team, but I was drawn to how relatable they were.

I've watched this 2x already, atleast. I love that this didn't feel like I was listening to an interview Q being answered. It truly felt like an authentic, thoughtful response-- probably why i found it quite memorable & relatable. Thank you so much for bringing us along into your decision-making process. You've made me consider aspects of anesthesiology that perhaps I might never have❤
That is what I wish people talked about. Being introspective about how we come to life decisions is a skill many don't talk about. I am incredibly grateful that you found this helpful. It is the only reason why I do this.
@@kelvin-darko hey, what the different between Crna, AA and CAA?
Thanks!! This video gave me the perspective I was looking for.
This was great! And I’ve been torn between anesthesiology and neurology, but your perspective on anesthesiology is definitely persuasive.
I feel you on the notes taking part. I have a Love-Hate relationship with it.
Great video 👏🏽
It's surprising to me that you never mentioned working with patients during what is a very anxious time in their lives. A good anesthesiologist can read people, help calm their fears, reassure them. This should be an essential part of being an anesthesiologist.
Thanks for sharing your experience! Im a final year médical student and I am considering anesthesiology, great video! Do a Day in the Life video!
Happy you found it helpful! It's why I do this.
You sir, are inspirational.
Thank you 😀
Wow that sounds badass-they come in during emergencies, stabilize the patient, then bounce lol
Bro just made me make up my mind on doing anesthesiology😂😂💯🔥
really good video what would you say about the financial potential
Great description of your desires & self awareness Dr. Ampem-Darko! *Following*
Quick question about your program
Does Hopkin have their residents do a double board certification in Anesthesiology and critical care within the 4 years? Or you have to do a separate Fellowship?
It's a five year track here for ICU double boarding. Hope this helps!
@kelvin-darko so the total Residency years for intern year, Residency and double board fellowship will be 5 years? Or 6 years?
Hey Dr. Darko. I got inspired from watching your videos. I am in upper Marlboro, MD. And I was hoping if there’s a way I could shadow you !
Sadly, you can't shadow a resident (like myself) but reaching out to hospitals with attendings is a great place to start!
Great video. 🎉
Please, is Anesthesia as competitive as Emergency Medicine?
Emergency medicine used to be more competitive but nowadays anesthesiology is more competitive. Emergency is trending to be less competitive and anesthesia is trending to be more competitive.
can you tell the process of how you become an anesthesiologist and what major did you take in university after 12?
I was a Neuroscience major and Hispanic studies minor!
What’s up man, I tried to go to college to be a anesthesiologist after I graduated high school in 08 but it was gonna be too hard because of my cerebral palsy so now donate to the anesthesiologist Foundation, I have always wanted to be a anesthesiologist physician! I’m 33 from Memphis! I’m subscribe to Dr max CZcams channel, he’s awesome
It means the world to me that you feel this way. And yes, Max is awesome. He's a resident at where I went to med school and trust me, he is just as nice in person as he is on camera.
@@kelvin-darko ok cool! I would like to meet max in person, I really enjoy donating to the anesthesiologist Foundation
So I shadowed an anesthesiologist and he said to avoid this career because CRNAs are increasingly practicing without any supervision. Is that true?
That is an interesting take on the field of anesthesiology. It is complicated to answer with one comment but based on my experiences, I do not agree with that opinion. That being said, this too is just an opinion of mine. Hope you found my answer helpful!
@@kelvin-darko Thank you doctor! I think the whole thing of nurse practitioners, CRNAs, PTs, dentists, Pharmacists, Psychologists calling themself doctor too has become ridiculous. I literally have to ask people what kind of doctor they are now because looks like everyone is a doctor these days.
There will be plenty of job opportunities for both MD’s and CRNAs.. both of which are doctoral programs and both will take about 10 years to complete.. RRNA here.. the main thing to worry about is AI and robotics taking over so if you want to get in, I would start sooner rather than later
Was your friend Max Feinstein?
What undergraduate major did you take?
I was a major in Neuroscience with a minor in Hispanic Studies.
I'm interested in becoming a crna and this is probably the most helpful video I've watched so far
you'll regret it later
I doubt it
