My name is Dr. Karen Francois and I am a 5th year Attending physician based out of NY. These stories will chronicle my life with Anesthesia, as an Anesthesiologist and home life with my husband and 3 children. Through these glimpses into my life I hope to inspire and motivate young women or men into seriously considering Anesthesia as a career choice.

I’m currently 16, and I want to be an anesthesiologist so bad, and last year I was in 10th grade and I took Medical Terminology and that class was supposed to be for seniors only. I hope I make it one day.

I’m an anesthesiologist.
It’s a lousy field to go into. The pay is good - although there are certainly much higher-paying fields - and there are some upsides to the field.
However: you went to medical school to become a physician. Most of the benefits of being a physician, you give up as an anesthesiologist.
We are not respected in our work setting. Not by surgeons. Not even by nurses.
Our field involves very little medicine, and requires very little medical knowledge to carry out. Our work - with very little exception - consists of simple tasks that are exceedingly narrow in variety.
We have little control over what is done for patients, both in and out of the operating room. In fact, we really have little control over the services we provide. Surgeons dictate what kind of anesthesia services they want and we provide them at their behest, with little or no input.
We have little control over our work schedules. Surgeons and other proceduralists pretty much decide when we work.
Very rarely do we ever have to play doctor. That’s the god’s honest truth. Anesthesiologists who are happy with the field are generally people who take themselves way too seriously while simultaneously having little desire to challenge themselves.
It is simply not a good field.
@@mas3ymd it always is like this about every field in any job. I always see so many people praising the field and then theres one guy who always feel very negative about their field. I dont know what to think anymore bro.

In the end, it’s a personal choice. It’s highly subjective. What I like you may not like, and vice-versa. It surely applies to medicine.
There are, however, some things that are not subjective. There are some very negative features of anesthesiology that most physicians would detest.
Med student here strongly considering the field, I had just watched the original med school insiders video and I really appreciate hearing your take on everything that was presented as a practicing anesthesiologist! Thanks for making the video, looking forward to checking out more of your content
Ya dont go into this field i am an MD anesthesiologist. For 30 years..You are just someone else’s bitch…no one respects you..nurses will take this over.

Im 32 and just starting junior college , which means i could be an anesthesiologist at 44 or 45 years old , but the way i see it , ill be 45 no matter what I do , so i might as well do something worth while .

I had 2 of them when I had my spine surgery last November
I’m applying to medical schools now and I’m REALLY hoping I make it. I was dead set on CAA for a while but I made the choice to go the physician route (for better or worse lol). I’ve shadowed so many anesthesiologists now, and I’m so inspired to get to their level.

Yes, pain management is a sub-specialty of Anesthesiology.
i aspire to be Anesthesiologist and i have a working understanding and interest towards chemistry, i think that's a goods sign haha!
7:29 I LOVE this analogy. While yes, your car can function relatively fine in autopilot, in order to achieve optimal performance and safety, human intervention is ideal. Hence why Anesthesiologists work perioperatively on a case. While some of it is straightforward, it is by no means easy and requires lots of attention and especially coordination.

it’s very realistic and super super engaging to watch

I definitely learned a lot from it end it was the show that got me into medical history in the first place

Hey doc! This video really helped getting some insight. Im quite far away from potentially going to Med School, only in tenth grade. Quite a silly question from me but how long are you allowed to keep your nails as an anaesthesiologist? Do they have to be kept completely short and are you allowed to have them done?
how often do cases "go south" and you're dealing with great heart rate or blood pressure fluctuations?
What’s the lifestyle like? How many hours do you work per week as a full time doc and what are typical hours eg, nights vs days
Could you plz do a video on how to behave , dress and answer in residency interview plz...it would be really helpful😄😄

Thank you for your vids! Can you explain what you do in the cases where you absolutely have to do surgery with the patient has eaten (ie someone went out for dinner and on their way home, they are in a massive car accident needing immediate trauma surgery). Obviously it is ideal that patients not have a full stomach and why they are told not to eat before scheduled surgeries, but I was just curious about emergencies where you still have to proceed. What kinds of things do you do to decrease the risks associated with surgery under these circumstances?
What the anaesthesiologists do in this case is called a rapid sequence induction for the general anaesthesia to prevent mendelson's syndrome (aspiration of stomach content).

Awesome video- subscribed! I’m premed and I’ve been pretty sure I want to do psychiatry for a while, but I’m exploring other specialties I might want to look into. I find pharmacology super interesting and love working under pressure, so anesthesiology is another consideration. Thanks for this video, it was very informative!

Same here, psychiatry really drew me into the medical circle but now I’m more drawn to anesthesiology and radiology.

Not sure if youre still reading or replying to comments but if so I have a couple questions regarding the field if youre willing to help!
Im unsure of who to go to for more information about this field, hence why Im watching videos about it on youtube. I want to go into Anesthesiology, Im working on my bachelors right now and I work part-time in retail. Id like to get my foot in the door and get some experience with hospitals while I’m still working on my bachelors (and later on in med school). Are there any jobs you would recommend in the hospital before Anesthesiology, to get more experience and knowledge? I was considering a surgical tech, so I could be working in the OR and understand the equipment and routine, but if I get too much experience in one field, would I even be considered for a future Anesthesiologist career? (Sorry this is a long comment/question!)

Dr can you react to a recent article on Medscape of a hospital that let go of all it's Anesthesiologist for a full crna model. Is the specialty getting replaceable?
It’s an important topic, and the increased presence of mid level providers is the way the healthcare model is heading in various specialties, not just in anesthesia...we need more healthcare workers period. At the end of the day, I’m fully confident in the necessity of the skills of a physician anesthesiologist. Also, I strongly believe that a model promoting MD/DO/CRNAs working together really reduces the risk of burnout, which is high for this specialty.
Also..we are all replaceable. Just like Beyoncé said..🤷🏾♀️

Hi! I'm a first year med student and STEP 1 will be pass/fail for my class. What kinds of things should I be focusing on as a med student if I want to apply for anesthesia later on? Is research essential? Is volunteering important? What do residency panels really look for in anesthesia?

But briefly, try to get anesthesia experience early on, and sign up for electives early in 3rd year..so that you can secure solid experiences as well as letters of recommendations from anesthesiologists. I have a question how many people do u take care a day and do u have to be good at math becasue im not that good
It varies from day to day. For example today I took care of 5 patients. Yesterday it was 9 (colonoscopies), and tomorrow it will be 3. Though there are some basic calculations you’ll have to do for drug dosing, it becomes pretty routine and anything that’s otherwise tricky definitely gets done on a calculator! No shame in that!
How can v check if v r good with our hands or not......Cause I hit all the other points that r needed for anesthesiologists but I'm not sure about this one
This depends on whether you like to do procedures. If you find satisfaction in it, even if you fail, that will not deter you.

All anesthesiologists are trained in critical care as a part of residency, but those who want to work in an ICU as an attending, should do an extra year in fellowship training (and take critical care board exam).

Hi there! I'd really like to know if you are able to work part time. I value free time over 50+ hr work weeks.
I’m 26 years old and I’ve been looking into this field. When I was younger I always wanted to be a doctor in the medical field, I was looking into nursing but I don’t think it would be for me. Feeling discouraged because I feel like I wasted so much time, I don’t even have my bachelors degree. I really wanted to go back to school but I feel too old 🥲
It’s never to late to finish your bachelors and pursue your MD or DO. Im in medical school and I have classmates at the age of 50! It’s never too late to pursue your dreams. Also nursing anesthesiology or CRNA is also a great field. If you decided to get a nursing BSN or RN, that’s another option with less time commitment. I’m sure if you start now you will be a CRNA by the age of 32-35. It’s a great investment of your time. Good luck!
Absolutely not too late. Going back this September for a second degree at the exact same age (26.) Already have a bachelors but doing another one in sciences.
Not too old. I met a surgeon who was 80ish and still practicing. You can use your education forever. Go for it!
