When you melt copper should use a graphite mold or a thick steel mold with graphite powder, Preheat everything that is going to touch the metal in including the copper steam explosion are a lot worse than aluminum steam explosion. Slag is the stuff that is already on the stuff you want to melt, Dross is a residue that is left on the surface of molten metal ( AKA a thin oxidized layer). I recommend that you have a ceramic piece in you smelter to raze you crucible to increase the life on it. Also be care full that you are not over heating you're metal. I have done a lot of research in to this because it was the only way my parents would let me so if you have questions pleases let me know.

This is not a smelter. Smelting is a very different process used to extract base metal from ore. This is a melting furnace.

Watch out when pushing down the aluminum. I was pushing the aluminum down in a smelter before and some bubbled up and got me in the hand.

1:00 You had your propane tank valve opened too much. All I do is open the valve just enough to lite the propane. Getting close to the propane with that much flow, combines with the air valve being open, you're almost begging for a very bad day. A much safer way to lite the propane is to set a small piece of paper on fire and drop it into the furnace. If you're having issues with the crucible sticking to the fire brick, put the crucible into the furnace before lighting the propane, but put a small piece of cardboard, slightly larger than the bottom of your crucible, under the the crucible and then light the propane. The ashes from the cardboard will prevent the crucible from sticking to the fire brick. Get your tools and molds hot before use. It is really easy for moisture to cause an explosion that can cause a lot of damage, not only to your tools, but to yourself as well. Watch CZcamsr "bigstakD Casting" for a lot of very useful and helpful information.

Be really careful when not preheating stuff, i seen a recent vid of a dude after a steam explosion, not worth the saved time.
Also watch out for air pockets in the metal, it can explode about the same way a steam explosion does (mostly to worry on pipes). The ingots came amazingly btw!

its funny how you hand out safety advice about working around hot metal in your short sleaved shirt haha.

worried a bit when you took the tong and placed the bar in water and submerged the tongs. Then used those now wet tongs to upright the mold. Last thing we need is a steam explosion demo.
Also with a plastic visor wouldn't hot metal at speed just go straight through? Maybe not aluminum but thinking copper etc would.
Got the same furnace but waiting 1 more day for the cement to harden a bit more.
Have a big bin full of metal but my main prize from the local tip was a huge aluminum support bar that must be at least 15+ kg.

      Thanks for your comment
In my experience with aluminum, I have not had to worry too much about steam explosions unless the metal comes in direct contact with water. However, definitely be safer than me.
The plastic face mask has been fine so far for my purposes. If you have a better one though you should use it.
Ps sounds like you gotta great haul.

Buy a proper iron cast mould instead of an old, bent, bread baking pan. You'll get much nicer looking ingots out of it.

Does 10Kg mean the crucible will hold 20ish pounds of molten aluminum?

    • @DragonAtelier
      @DragonAtelier Před rokem +2

@@AmplifiedStatic unfortunately you are wrong. The weight of ceucibles is described in copper wise sometimes gold wise. So 10kg is the weight what it can hold of molten copper. Aluminium wise it would be something like 3kg - 10kg crucible has a safe volume of about 1.1liter of molten metal

@@DragonAtelier i think i read on devil forge website that was the brass weight. Not the copper weight. But i might be wrong

But seriously. Do use more cation around extremely hot items... Treating 3rd burns are no laughing matter (and I dislike having to do that). Please please don't just mention what you should do, actually take the extra time and perp and be safer. It just might save you a painful recovery.
