- Today I am officially jumping into a new era of historical costuming: the 1890s! Which means, it's time for me to tackle a whole new era of corsetry as well.
This 1890s sewing adventure, like most of my life, is heavily inspired by my amazing friend, Sam: / by_strings_attached (@by_strings_attached)

The odds of dying a sewing related death are low but never zero
You could trip on something and possibly bump your head against the corner of your sewing table. Or you could somehow be very unlucky and your sewing machine falls on your head. Or you could have a heart attack because you cut throught 2 layers of your small amount of your veeerrrryyyy expensive silk by accident.

That is the truest and wisest statement I believe I've ever read. I know I'm personally terrified of swallowing a pin, and while I don't think I'd die, I'm not exactly eager to find out.

I so want to create a tiny paper corset as a desk decoration, now. Or perhaps many tinier ones as Christmas tree ornaments. Yes, I am a bizarre human.
I’ve always loved the 1890’s. My great-grandmother on my mother’s side was a young woman at the time. My family tends to have children quite late in life, so while I’m only 45, my grandfather would be 116, and his mother 155. It’s amazing to have heard first-hand accounts of how she dressed, and that she wore a corset into the 1930’s preferring it to other undergarments. Your mock-up has a beautiful shape, and I’m certain will be stunning when the final garment is complete.

That is the BEST idea I've ever heard. My Christmas tree this year might just be filled with hundreds of tiny paper Symington corsets.
That's such a wonderful connection to the 1890s. She sounds like she was absolutely amazing! I wish I had more firsthand accounts of things like that from family members, but the generations before me never passed anything like that down.

@@ThreadedThistle you can tape muslin about 1/2" from the top, and on the sides and bottom onto a regular piece of printer paper ( or iron it to freezer paper cut to size) and print it on an inkjet printer. search youtube for "printing on fabric"

My initial training came from my Nana (trained as a tailoress). She taught me to sew over pins. My initial professional training was in fashion. They taught me mostly to machine without pins, but that if you have a tricky shape where you need to pin, to sew over them.
And then I studied hat making at art school, and when we did the machine sewn part of the course, they taught us to - you guessed it - sew over the pins!

Just found your channel, love your videos, hope you pop back up to make more! I'm an 1890s-1910s newbie sewing enthusiast with some thrown in 1930s-1950s cloths because why not. I need to make a corset and am horrified to do so-still very new to sewing, so I keep procrastinating and making chemise (shifts, etc) through the centuries instead.

My favorite pattern weights for large projects are the two geocrystals I got at the gift shop at one of the museums I visited on my 8th grade DC trip and the many hot rocks that were made yearly in elementary school. It was everyone’s favorite every year. The teacher would put rocks in a toaster over and set them in front of us on a towel and we would melt old crayons on them. My mom was going to throw them out but I saved them just in time. My favorite are the ones we’re I got ahold of metallic crayons.
Oh I absolutely adore that, and the story is so wonderful! I just started using crystals as pattern weights this past month! They work really well, and they’re absolutely lovely to look at! 🥰
A good tip for pattern weights from a sewing ingeneer: use gears!
They are heavy, vary in size, behave extremely well near curves (!) and are quite decorative when cleaned and spraypainted.
Ask nicely at your local scrapyard and you get as many as you want for extremely little money.
Hi! I just started sewing recently. I made a 1850s/60s skirt in 3 days for an event, but now I'm working on a blouse from a big four pattern. So far I've learned cutting fabric is hard, how to sew pintucks inside out, how to seamrip pintucks out, and how to sew them the right way, lol.
Welcome to the sewing world! Cutting fabric is by far my least favorite part of any project. Those are all good and handy lessons lol 😂

Btw, you can quite legitimately wear some padding underneath the corset, it was done historically as well - and has two advantages over external padding: it makes the corset more comfy (being padded), plus the silhouette is smoother, as the corset smoothes the edges of the padding :D Historically it would be done, as corsets were bought in standard sizes based on waist circumference and you would just pad the rest to fit ;)
Plus, I love that you sew across the pins, I always do that too, as I was also thought that in school - and it's so much faster :D :D

Yes you’re correct, it is completely plausible to put padding in and still stay accurate. I am planning on making bust padding to go with this corset, but it turns out I really do just have enough hip spring naturally to go without the excess underneath for now. I totally did make it sound like padding under the corset was’t a thing though, didn’t I? I guess that’s something I’ll have to correct in a future video 😂
It really is so much faster to sew over them! Honestly I wasn’t aware that there were people who took the time to take them out until multiple years after learning to sew.

That music about ten minutes into the video, while ripping the first mock up, that is one of my favorite choral songs, the most traditional summer hymn in Sweden.
But, I'm so thankful for every new CZcams-video that comes this weird time. Perfect to keep me occupied between and during all my hand sewing. I only sew by hand, just because I realized that I don't have money to pay for 200 projects in one year, by hand it takes more time so I save money💰. Right now a 18th century chemise and lots of hand felling

For pattern weights, I went to my hardware store and picked up 2-4 inch metal washers. They work great and are super cheap!
Ahhh! Bad girl! No sewing over pins!!!! 😝💖 I have done more victorian than I have most other periods, but I'm trying 18th century for a change. Working from the bottom up, starting with the shift! It is great to see what you are working on! P.S. I finally took the plunge and started my channel!
In my own defense, I usually at least consider taking them out for a moment before sewing over them anyway 😂😂

I do a lot of sewing for Cosplay and plan on sewing more of my own clothing as soon as I can stock up on fabrics again. I just recently finished handsewing a waistcoat/vest and a skirt for a Meriadoc Cosplay from _Lord of the Rings_ and am currently working on a cloak for my Keyleth of the Air Ashari Cosplay from _Critical Role_ Campaign One. It's a _Game of Thrones_ style cloak with a (faux) fur shoulderpiece, leather straps that cross over the chest and buckle in the back and loads of tiny embroidered leaves at the bottom. The cloak the character actually owns is made from real leaves, but I didn't want to use plastic leaves both for practicality and cost as well as environmental reasons. So it's fabric and recycled belts and fur from an old coat instead. The Cloak is my final piece of the costume, the rest - a tunic, leather bracers and a leather circlet with antlers is already all done. I am super excited to finish it because once it's done I will start on two more, very detailed Cosplays, one from _Star Wars_ and another one from _Critical Role_.

That final mockup is beautifull, I can see myself wearing it over a black or a white blouse.
Very nice video, gorgeous work, etc, OH GOD PLEASE NEVER SEW OVER PINS!!! They can snap and fly in unexpected places (including eyes if you're unlucky!) or even break your needle!! Also the bug is a mood I live and sew in a basement and the amount of HUGE UNEXPECTED BEETLES I have to interact with is truly a nightmare.
Thank you! I’m very familiar with the dangers of sewing over pins, I’ve had a few friends come into broken pin mishaps over the years, yet here I still am 😂 Oh the bug was such an experience! I’ve since moved into an attic and let me tell you it’s only gotten worse since.
HI! I use washers from Lowe's as pattern weights! Get the big ones. They're pretty cheap and you get like, 20 per box.
Hello! 😊 Those are what I have in my little fabric paper weights, and you’re correct they really can do wonders! I’m afraid I didn’t have very many when I made them last time, but once restrictions lift a bit more around here I’m considering going out and buying another box to make more! Though I’m seriously considering simply wrapping them in some scrap fabric and being done instead of sewing them up this time. I really don’t think it makes much of a different besides aesthetics 😂

I try to remove my pins before sewing over them, because people have told me to, but I tend to forget.
On the other hand I am afraid of my needle breaking and hitting me in the face, so I wear safety goggles when sewing in busks...
Also this video reminded me I should finish my mock-up for my stays, so thank you for that!
I am far more likely to remove my pins if I'm working with a nice fabric, but it's so easy to just keep going instead. I am also absolutely terrified of needles breaking and hitting me in the face! I often wear glasses of some form when I sew in busks or work with anything metal, and then I sew so slowly it's almost painful.

XD I was losin' it over your improvised fabric weights! The very best fabric weight I've ever had is also the very worst one, cause she sheds aaalll over my nice fabrics. XD yes, I've totally cut and sewn patterns and fabric by using my cat Jinx as a weight. She's gotten used to me pointing out where to lay and does so now pretty regularly. (She's disappointed that my current projects are too small for her to lay on. ) The mockup and hip spring refashioning look fantastic, and I'm so excited to see the real one!

I have that exact same awl and that exact same seam ripper and I, too, have that same problem lol. I also have that same rotary cutter. It's got some grooves right over the blade where you can place the tip of your finger for more control. Looking forward to seeing the final version of the corset!

My sewing adventure at the moment is a pink lolita plague doctor. Because I (for fun) made a quilted plague doctor mask in pink fabrics, laces and flowers and now I want an outfit that goes with the mask. XD

I just finished a super simple late 18th century shift, that I now wear every night to bed. Honestly, even though they are supposedly simple, shifts are something of my own personal enemy, so I’m always impressed by people who willingly make more than one. After many years of sewing I’ve only ever convinced myself to make the bare minimum number. I’m so glad you like these videos! I'm also working on a corset at the moment. I think mine is an 1880s one from black snail patterns, based on aan actual corset from the time, might have also come from the Symington collection 🤔. I did some adjustments to make it work for me, so far giving more space in the hip area. I might have lost a lot of weight for no apparent reason, it means I need a new corset and I still have more hip or should I say bum? than a pattern expects with my other measurements.

I have an 1890s corset that I made in uni and I love it but it fits horrifically and I should totally make a new one but I have a list as long as my arm of sewing projects I need to do 😂 also I'm in love with the shirts you wear in this video 😍
Oh my goodness I 100% understand that. I have a pair of corded 1830s stays that fit terribly these days, but I put so much time into it I'm loathe to make a new one. Also I have about 1,000 project ideas I want to get to, and though another 1830s gown is on it, it's definitely not the top priority.

I'm currently doing a mock-up using a free article or foundations revealed and I love it, though it's not historically accurate, as my first attempt to do a corset it's going pretty well, of course some bedsheets die for this process also I'm putting on practice dying with natural pigments, so this mock-up is turning into a really funny thing to do
I absolutely love Foundations Revealed's articles, they're so helpful! I'm so glad the corset is going well! I've always wanted to do dyeing with natural pigments, but I've only had limited opportunities to work with them thus far. They seem really interesting though!
My god, the mockup is really good, and it’s only a mockup ! I can’t wait to see how the actual finished corset will look like 😁 I love the colorful fabric you used for the mockup :) I really enjoy the fact that your videos are instructional and fun at the same time ! I really want to make my own Victorian corset now, but I’m not sure I will be able to 😅

Foundations Revealed has some great free articles on their website about it, and it’s definitely something you get better at the more research and practice that goes into it. If you want to and you have the time, it’s definitely something you should try! 😊

It's always interesting to see how other people fit their corsets and what changes they make! I think you achieved a very nice shape! I think though that you didn't need to shorten the corset - now it hits a strange spot under your armpits and creates a bit of bulk. So I would recommend you keep the original lenght.
I really do find watching peoples' corsetry processes to be fascinating. Thank you so much for the input. I really couldn't sit down comfortably with the longer length, as it was jutting terribly into my legs, but I was considering adding a smidge more height to the top of the corset.
@@ThreadedThistle Oh yeah, it's horribly uncomfortable if you can't sit so adjusting that was a good idea. You are right, you can just add some hight on the top and I think it'll be perfect!
I am amazed that you cut such little intricate bits with a rotary cutter! You're brave. Also, your mockup looks fantastic!
Honestly I only do it because I have some sort of personal vendetta against pinning patterns to heavy fabric. My rotary cutter and I are slowly becoming enemies though, so next time I might just grab the shears. Thank you so much!
@@ThreadedThistle but when you're using pattern weights (whatever kind they may be), you don't need to pin! Though you can't lay out all the pieces at once - you have to do one at a time.
My pattern weights also are various items in my sewing room, btw. I find my phone and tv remote are the best ones.

Random objects really can be the best pattern weights!
I would wear that mock up to a picnic! With a big picture hat. With a frilly petticoat. But, you have probably already guessed that I am a little out there. Still, it is really pretty.
It really would make a great picnic outfit! The colors just scream spring picnic outing.

Hello! Thank you so much! I usually use white as well for that same purpose lol! This was one of the first mockups I’ve made in a while from a fun print, and it was kind of a nice change, but I really am starting to get attached to it.
I like the mockup material, you could definitely use it for history bounding.

My current project is a dress that I realized about 3/4 of the way through that I don't have enough fabric for it. So I put it in the back of my closet to wallow in its shame out of sight. I'll probably finish it when I find it 40 years from now
Oh no! That’s really sad. I’ve definitely been in that same position though. Hopefully it’ll be less than 40 years, but I understand not wanting to work on it for a bit. Running out of fabric is just so frustrating.
@@ThreadedThistle it probably won't be 40 years :D I'll come back to it when I'm a bit less peeved. Maybe I'll take the whole thing apart and make something requiring less fabric who knows
I pin horizontally to and also just sew over them. I was in my 30's before I heard the idea you should not sew over pins! LOL
I’m do glad to know I’m not alone! No one ever brought up the concept of not sewing over them to me, so it wasn’t until I started watching costuming vlogs that I realized maybe some people were taught differently lol!

I hit three pins in a row one day and just gave up, pins come out now
okay so im kinda curious and i have a problem with my first corsetXD. i bought a very beautifull pattern from someone on etsy and im currently trying to make a mock up. when i had found my size and measured all the pieces for that side and sewed one half i came to the realisation that it coverd 3/4 of my body.....
something somewhere went terrible wrongXD. my question now is what is a good thing to do with my mock up? i need to take out like 17 cm at each side atleast (this is after already removing one panel from each side) and im not sure what to do:P. so if you or anybody else has some tips i would gladly hear them:).

I was wondering, how did you scale the pattern up to the proper size? I'm currently in the process of scaling up a similar pattern from the Symington collection, and trying to figure out exactly how to scale it properly has been the actual bane of my existence.
