Hi, doctor! I'm 17 and I'm going to apply for med school next year in my home country. The specialty I'm looking forward to applying for is psychiatry. I've always found myself being interested in the malfunctionality of the brain and the bio-psychosocial consequential results. I personally have an aim to continue my aftergraduate education in Switzerland where the residency of psychiatry and psychotherapy is six years minimum. It's a satisfying field and I want to help improving the quality of mental health care system. My main aim is to create an innovative preventative plan for patients with psychotic disorders and more specifically catatonic schizophrenia. This video was amazing and I hope you have a great day!

I would imagine being a Psychiatrist helps you in your personal relationships. But, this could largely be through managing your own self, given your education and experience. (Plus, for fellas of our age, wisdom tends to come with the passing years.) However, are there times when being a Psychiatrist feels like a detriment, when dealing with family or friends? I'm sure that would largely depend on the other person, but I can imagine some of my family or friends feeling intimidated by talking with me, if I were a Psychiatrist. Something like: "What? Are you analyzing me?"

Hello! I’m currently a pre-med students with my eyes on psychiatry. I recently shadowed a psychiatrist and it appeared the bulk of her work was 15 minute medication management appointments. As someone with a particular interest in performing psychotherapy in conjunction with medication management, I was a little startled by her approach as it seems to be the norm in psychiatry. I whole-heartedly believe this is the correct path for me, but I worry about psychotherapy’s place in psychiatry since the pharmacology revolution. Is it still possible to be a psychiatrist who practices a significant degree of psychotherapy while also medication managing? Thanks:) I appreciate your videos!

It may be wise for you to get as much information as possible about psychology and psychiatry, and then see what your overall gut feeling about a possible switch in careers is. Also, psychology and psychiatry can be quite different. Psychiatry would involve 4 years of medical school and 4 years of residency. Peter Goertz
