Probably overconfidence played a part. I think the coach took Barcelona too lightly. But it's a good lesson moving forward. Barcelona femine is a world class team, the result of a project going on for a couple of years.

It was an own goal and it was a penalty, but Barca forced these errors upon Chelsea as they were all over them ...... Martens was outstanding

It's interesting to see her not blame herself. I've seen most of the Chelsea games since Harder came around last summer. To be honest, when I watched the final live, I thought she was the one to blame. She made some strange changes. So not typical of Chelsea.

Typical of English managers, when things don't go their way they blame something or someone. There is no such thing as freak or cheap goals in football. Scoring chances are created and the goal is scored because of the situations created. Hayes contradicts herself, she regards the first play (and score) as a cheap goal and (Barcelona) a top team in the same sentence... which is is, Hayes? There are 6 Barça attacking players inside the penalty box at the time and your defense is stunned and confused. The goal was destine to go in, no matter what your defense does at this point.
Hayes also says that her gk didn't make a save... for one thing the shots are finding the mark, but she clearly had to make a save on Aitana's shot only two minutes after the first goal and was clearly beaten again by Oshoala late in the game (although the play was ruled offsides).
On a news conference a day before the match she said her team was the more experienced side with proven world cup and Olympic winners among them. She also made light of the Spanish side's lesser quality league competition. Yet this time she points out that barcelona benefited from their experience in the finals two years ago. Again, which is it, Hayes?

"The best of the two teams in Europe were in the final tonight" : I think so (as a French). Chelsea and Barcelona were the best that's exactly the final I predicted... with at the end the Barça victory coz' Chelsea has probably some of the best players but Barça showed all along the season the best collective game. Spanish soccer improves and Spain will be very dangerous at the next European Nations championship. Congrat to the coach : great dignity. I must add that, two years ago, Lyon was very lucky to beat Chelsea in semi-final, very lucky.

Ya it was errors that the team made, especially the first 2 goals but don't act like it wasn't forced by the Barca pressure. Barca is a class above right now, hopefully Chelsea can get there. Barca only had like 4 shots on goal and it was 4-0, clinical, you don't need anymore than that if you can finish. Barca are patient and possess the ball in the other teams half well. Harder should've had a couple... she was the only Chelsea player to play in a UWCL final as well.

Chelsea will not make to the final next time. Vfl Wolfsburg and Bayern M. have become much stronger and in the matches against Bayern this year Chelsea had all the luck (that they lacked in the final). Barcelona might be.

I agree Chelsea were lucky against the German sides and contributed to their overconfidence against Barcelona. They were well and truly beaten and the gulf in class was evident to all.I am not sure about Emma Hayes.

I am a Chelsea fan and I must agree with you about Chelsea getting to the final next year. The big guns are going in for re-enforcements and will come back tougher next year. Chelsea needs to make a few adjustments to make it to the final again next year.

    • @gabrBL82
      @gabrBL82 Před 3 lety

I'm not sure if respect is the right word. They have the most expensive roster of all European clubs, which is what one comes to expect from English clubs. It worked in the WSL this year, as it did for its EPL big brothers, but only this year. I don't think throwing money at something is a solution, it didnt work for RM in the early 00's with the galácticos and it won't last for Chelsea, or any other club that wants to buy a championship. It may have worked for Chelsea and City this year in the UCL, but it won't last. You have to grow and nourish talent; develop players, bring them up through the ranks. You complement with a few additions, but not the entire side, as it was the case in this women's final.

Actually, most of the Barcelona players came from their academy, with few exceptions, such as the foreign players. Lozada, Jenni, Leila, Alexia, Aitana, Marta, Bruna, Mapi, Paños, Patri, are all academy and youth players.

I suppose it shows guts to complain about the fight being over in the first round after taking one on the chin from Mike Tyson.
The own goal came after Barca hit the cross bar and the penalty came because your defense was beat.
PS: Physicality doesn't work against Barca -- ask Fergie.

@@mlsarchitect Barcelona women's team are nothing but a group of delusional failures , Check them vs Atm ( Supercopa de espana feminina ) when they failed , check again when L'ol Feminine torn them apart 4-1 in UWCL 2 versions ago ( you want the link? :D )
Guess who scared the hell out of Lyon in the semi final , when we wasted a P.K in France and the 1 goal we needed to qualify in the 2nd leg would've easily been Karen Carney's ball that hit the boost , and we defeated ATM Femini in this version of UWCL , and we haven't lost to Man City the whole season unlike another Sucky team , even when we had 2 world class players missing ( Team Captain and our main defensive line and Norway captain - Note that Norway are former women's world champions unlike some other countries/players who got nothing like that and most likely they won't )
And guess what Barcelona blind followers are just the worst , ordinary nobodies who just goes with the trend cause they have no brains at all ( No offense if you are someone like that ) , so live with it in peace xD
And last but not least , I already so that coming cause we played a player who makes a lot of mistakes on the side backs , and otherwise , i don't think the dumb luck that sucky team had that day would've been enough to beat the Best Women's Football Club team in the world in this dirty fashion that day , so deal with that too and know the truth !
