  • In the Republic, Book II, Glaucon challenges Socrates with a story of what a man would do if he could get away with anything with no penalty. The perfectly unjust man who has a reputation for being wonderful and the perfectly just man who has a reputation for being a monster are compared to push Socrates to prove that justice is the right choice no matter what.

The critical theory element here is how the social circle or system perceives the just/unjust individual versus intrinsic justice/injustice, that is, how the individual perceives themselves, and then the dynamics of both the outside and inside instantiations of justice. This gives me a lot to ponder as an armchair philosopher. Thank you, Dr. Laurie Johnson!
