Dustbowl Diatribes Season 3, Ep. 21: Danse Macabre, Round 2: Cooperation vs. Collusion
What happens when even basic business can't be effectively done? How did we get here? Ever thought you were doing someone a favor and they took it as an insult, or worse? Spencer and Laurie digest more of John Rao's thoughts from various books and try to settle their argument from the last episode. Along the way, they tell some stories about cooperation failures and muse on the role of the mania for understanding everything in one theory. To support the Maurin Academy, consider:

    Im a conservative socialist. I genuinely don't understand how conservatives can defend capitalism. Its everything we despise. It exploits ppl and the environment, treating us as commodities. It demands endless growth. It's hedonistic, ruthlessly individualistic, literally buys communities from under the ppls feet, encourages mass consumption etc. It alienates us from our labor, from each other, from ourselves... Thats not conservative in the slightest. It replaced the almighty God with the almighty dollar. We exist as a means to a never satisfied end. It claims that "greed is good" despite greed being one of the seven deadly sins. Capitalism speaks of human nature being selfish and greedy, which if true, why would anyone wish to promote said instincts with such a model? And if human nature is so cut and dry, why do capitalists do everything they can to manipulate our desires and behaviors? Socialism and conservativism value community and the human condition. They both admonish superficial materialism. They may disapprove for different reasons, but both groups want the same thing essentially. Which is why im a conservative socialist. Conservative social structures are best suited for a socialist economic model, which in turn rewards conservative values of family, community and discipline. Its the base and the superstructure working together instead of being in conflict.

    I hope she got a job at a Christian university. Although, I don't think "becoming a conservative" was the right move. "If you label me, you negate me." - Kierkegaard. If you label yourself, you negate yourself. If you say, "I'm a conservative," then you're making a political ideology a foundational part of your identity. Then you cannot think outside that ideology without triggering an identity crisis. Reject ideologies. Don't have opinions on issues where you haven't studied a variety of opposing viewpoints on the issue in question, evaluated the logical validity of many of the best arguments made for each viewpoint, and analyzed the relevant evidence.

    I guess in a lot of ways, modernity is like a second fall of humanity. But instead of ripping away the good things that God has given us on a super-natural level, this second fall rips away even the remaining good things He has provided at the natural level, like psychological wellbeing and healthy cultures.

  • @gregjs9665
    @gregjs9665 Před 12 dny

    Interesting. A bit like Adam and Eve discovering their nakedness after the fall. They were supposed to be too comfortable and at-home (in themselves, in Eden, in God) to notice it. In a way, they had been “cloaked” in un-self-conscious and easy loving relatedness. The story really expresses the pain of having that ripped away.

    I think you are onto something with trying to describe the psychological experience of dislocation. In 1970 the book Future Shock was getting at something similar. It was the shock of being dislocated in time instead of space. The term future shock was taken from culture shock. Toffler was saying that in 1970 the pace of change was exceeding the capacity for people to adapt and he described the psychological symptoms of this as complex adaptive syndrome or future shock. There are psychological symptoms but I would say social and policitical symptoms or behaviors also. I think you are exactly right that if you are embedded in your culture it is almost impossible to reflect in a psychological way about these things. I became aware of your channel because I was talking about modernity sickness and AI sent me your videos on Charles Taylor. I have shifted from working as a therapist to working as a culture war medic in the middle of God's Country and I have watched the gap grow over the last twenty years. Now most people I talk with either can't imagine being embedded but most people are vulnerable to the type of political changes you write about because they have been dislocated without psychologically working through all the changes following the sixties yet still experience themselves and those around them as still embedded so they insulate more and more and feel more and more threatened. Thanks for this channel and for writing and teaching on the intersection of psychology, culture and politics. you really are giving me the tools I need as a culture war medic.

    Hey! I haven't joined your Patreon (though I'm thinking about it), but I am sympathetic to the idea of your project. But I think you're giving too mean a reading to Cutrone. He's influenced first and foremost by Adorno, and to really know where Adorno is coming from you have to get into his Aesthetic Theory: "The impression of the ugliness of technology and the industrial landscape is not formally explained sufficiently, and is likely to persist in purely developed and aesthetically sound functional forms in the sense of Adolf Loos. It dates back to the principle of violence, of destruction. The purposes set are irreconcilable with what nature, however mediated, wants to say of itself. In technology, violence over nature is not reflected through representation, but comes into view directly. This could only be changed by a redirection of the technical productive forces, which no longer measures them merely against the intended purposes but also against nature, which is being shaped by technology. Unleashing the productive forces could, after the abolition of scarcity, take place in a dimension other than just the quantitative increase in production. Approaches to this can be seen where functional buildings adapt to landscape forms and lines; probably already when the materials from which artefacts were made came from their surroundings and blended into them like some castles and palaces. What is called a cultural landscape is beautiful as a schema of this possibility. Rationality that took up such motifs could help to heal the wounds of rationality. Even the naive verdict of the bourgeois consciousness on the ugliness of the landscape torn up by industry hits a relation, the apparent domination of nature where nature presents people with the facade of the uncontrolled. That indignation therefore blends in with the ideology of domination. Such ugliness would disappear once the relationship between people and nature was freed of the repressive character that continues the oppression of people, not the other way around." and also: "Only that which escaped the control of nature could help with its restauration." It's just that revolution has to take precedence so that anything like that can happen.

    Technique is a dead end. It may evolve and become faster, bigger, smaller, more efficient but there is never any reference to the practitioner or how it will threaten the features of his/her life. It is distinct from the human as the improvements and changes suggest itself even though the user mistakenly takes credit for them. Space, time and matter are the raw materials apart from human thought and feelings.

    I believe Christian anarquism and sinerquism need to fusion in a new concept of government, but to that happend we as a society need to evolve to close the distrofy of religions and democracy '' fake". As espiritually and ciênce connect like what happends in more advance systems (Pleiades. Sirius), to that happend we need to start to create small communities united by mutualism gold Standart assets and cooperative p2p system organize in small comunas... KIbutzs, Shovkozes, kholkozes are just tries to connect societies in a different aproach some off them fail cause the principles have a lot of erotion.. But he can't base a new system ANARQUIST CHRIST in Jesus principles, we need go more farway and see christ as a energy not a person..
