      My state requires front and rear plates and my tabs cost the same. I can also now keep the plates issued to me when I buy a car and transfer them to my new car. It saves the state money so they don't have to keep making new plates every time a vehicle is sold. When I grew up I lived on the border of ND MN one of the two states issued you your license plates for life.

Take a closer look at one the next time you see it on the road. Notice the "E" inside the circle on the license plate? That means it's a legally exempt government vehicle under state law. No emissions inspection and no registration fees are required of such vehicles. You'll see it on transit buses and transit agency vehicles too, since they're considered public service agencies. I used to drive buses for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority in, of course, as the name implies, Los Angeles. We could park at red curbs, in front of fire hydrants, at parking meters (without paying), just about wherever we wanted, and it was all legal. I think the only place we could'nt park was in a handicapped parking area. Other than that, we pretty much parked wherever, and the cops and parking enforcement people never messed with us.

    @HaloDude557 Před rokem +38

    This clown could not be more wrong. I will address his genius points
    1: Theft - what thieves would drive around in a stolen vehicle with stolen plates? It’s 30 seconds with a screw driver and then they become invisible by taking the plates off.
    2: Safety - as the news anchor mentioned, the retro and temporary plates are not reflective. In fact the entire car should be reflective to a degree, but it’s not illegal to get a matte paint job.
    3: Other states have front plate laws - this is not an argument. Almost half of the states don’t require it. Of those that do, many do not even consider it a primary offense, so you cannot get pulled over for it.
    The real reason, is MONEY. Traffic cameras and laser speed guns need the front plate to issue tickets when you are going 5 mph over the 55mph speedzone.
    They also can issue fix it tickets that are $100-$200 each. It is not required to actually install the plate. You can IGNORE the ticket and just pay the fine. Or, you can attach it temporarily, get the fine reduced to $20, and take it off immediately. It is literally a tax for rich people that just want to avoid drilling holes in their $80k car.

I remember living in BC years ago when they have speed cameras on the side of the road and for a number of years I sprayed my plates with a "REFLECTIVE" coating to cause the cameras flash to over-expose the picture so it wouldn't read the plate, this cop even got that wrong by saying the spray is a "non-reflective" coating...LOL! In both instances many years ago, the cars were ticketed while parked at a Park-n-Ride. The cars were backed into their spaces. My SS was parked next to a Vette. But the Vette was pulled in. So the meter maid didn’t notice it too had no front plate. No other instance on the road was I pulled over or stopped for not having a plate. Which tells me the CHP and cops are LAZY and won’t pull you over. But a meter maid with a quota and nothing better to do will ticket you.

This leads to more gasoline used or more electricity used for the car and is bad for the environment. Why does a state like California that cares so much about the environment still put a front license plate on all cars causing millions of gallons of extra gasoline to be burned every year? It would be a lot better for the environment if California follow the lead of most states and no longer require a front license plate.

    What a bunch of propaganda. If front license plates aren't necessary in some states, they aren't necessary in any state. I love how he tries to sell the benefits to YOU. It can help recover your car! It can help us find your vehicle that has gone off the road into a ditch or lake! But that's not all! It's just like car window tinting. If it's legal in one state, it should be legal in ALL states. They want you not to have window tinting so they can look into your car and see what you're doing. They might as well tell you that you can't have curtains on your home's windows. That would allow them to stop more crime, too. They want the front tag on your car because it helps with traffic cameras and speed detection. They also have scanners on the many cop cars (and stationary, too, I imagine) that scan and run thousands of plates as they drive around. How do I know that? I bought a used car from a guy from Florida. When he moved to California, he got two plates, but there was not a place to mount the front plate on the car's bumper (it was a Florida car). So he threw the other plate away. Over a year later I got pulled over and got a "fix-it" ticket (that still cost money, by the way) for not having it. The cop who pulled me over told me about the scanners. NONE of this is for your benefit. It's must another apparatus of control and identification. Years ago, where you went in your car really only got tracked at toll booths. Soon it will be that way everywhere. Front plates are necessary for that to function optimally.

There's always a more visible color for your car, or a version or model with better braking, or better visibility, etc. The arguments made here are lame. I always had my cars registered in California and I have been Driving in California without a front License Plate over 40 years I've been pulled over 3 times for speeding from the California Highway Patrol and not once have they said anything about me not having a front license plate or limo tinted windows front and back.My front license plate is a plate that says Ranger that I bought when I was in the Army .The only authority that said something to me about not having a front plate was a Border Patrol Agent at the San Diego/Tijuana border crossing as I'm driving back to the US from Mexico.They stand in a booth then type in your license plate as you drive up to the booth ,He was probably mad because he had to walk out of the booth and walk to the back of my car to check my license plate.All he said to me was you know you are required to have a front plate on your car,I said ok and then he just waved me on through.

      You know, I love how all of these people are sitting up there on their high horses all smug and arrogant with that big chip on their shoulders going, "Oh, I've been driving in California for XXX years without a front license plate, and I've never been stopped!!!" What's your point? Do you think that the fact that you've been getting away with it for whatever period of time you have means that somehow you are not in violation of the law? WRONG!!!! You ARE in violation of the law; I don't give a s**t if you've been doing it for 100 years, and Section 5200 of the California Vehicle Code does'nt care either!!! The law is the law!!!! The fact that you have'nt been cited for it as yet DOES NOT exempt you from full compliance with the law!!! And I get that some of you may not like that law; fine. Lobby your state representatives to have it changed. But until such time as they do, and those changes are signed into law by the Governor, you must comply if you want to drive in California!!! Use your heads!!!!

    I live in Fremont and I am frustrated at the amount of passenger vehicles that do not have a front plate displayed. Why aren't these drivers pulled over and cited? It could be an easy fix with the amount of street cameras placed at plenty of intersections. Vehicles get recorded coming and going from those intersections. It's obvious technology can flag the information and contact drivers who do not comply with this law.

      i think you are confusing vehicle detectors with cameras- those are detectors for smart signals. they don't use redlight cameras or embedded sensors in california.

    You guys should ask the Blue line gang members if they have front license plates on their own privately owned vehicles. If not, do they think they're above the law and that law doesn't apply to them.

    Next question: How much is the fine if you get caught with your Tesla without front license plate? (Answer: $20, so no cop is going to pull you over and waste their time)

      if you do not physically possess the second plate it will cost $50- what a new set of plates would cost. if you HAVE the plate to correct it, then its cheaper.
