KOREA: REMAINS OF US SOLDIERS KILLED IN KOREAN WAR ARE RECOVERED

Four sets of remains, believed to be those of U-S soldiers killed in the Korean War nearly a half century ago, were returned from North Korea on Monday.
They were the latest remains to be repatriated from North Korea since the United States was given access to the reclusive communist country a year and a half ago.
About 8,100 U-S servicemen remain unaccounted for from the war in which more than 50-thousand Americans died.
The remains were found by a 10-member U-S forensics team sent to the North in June to search for Americans from the 1950-53 Korean War.
Heavily cloudy skies and occasional rain greeted the return of the remains at this border village inside the demilitarized zone that separates the two rival Koreas.
Four North Korean soldiers handed the caskets containing the skeletal remains across the border.
They were received one by one by a U-N honour guard of four soldiers from the United States, Thailand, the Philippines and Columbia.
Monday's return follows a new agreement reached in May for three recovery operations this year.
U-S officials said the remains were recovered from an area about 30 kilometers (20 miles) south of the Chinese border where about 350 Americans are thought to have been killed in combat in October 1950.
So far, 209 sets of remains have been returned to the United States but only seven sets have been positively identified.
About 8100 U-S servicemen remain unaccounted for from the war, in which more than 50-thousand Americans died.
The recovery of remains of American war dead is a key U-S demand for improving relations with North Korea.
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
"We have a journey home for four U-S soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Korean conflict in 1950."
SUPER CAPTION: Alan Liotta, U.S. Department of Defence Prisoner Of War Missing Personnel Department
After a short service the remains were flown to the Central Identification Laboratory in Hawaii for forensic tests.
The first joint U-S-North Korea recovery was in 1996, when one set of remains believed to be those of a U-S soldier was returned.
This latest return comes only a day before North Korean negotiators are scheduled to sit down in New York with representatives of South Korea, China and the United States to begin talks on a permanent peace treaty.
The Korean War ended without a peace treaty, only a shaky armistice that left the two Koreas still technically at war.
Their border remains the most heavily guarded in the world, with two (m) million troops on both sides.

    • @aussiepickernobs2062
      @aussiepickernobs2062 Před 7 lety

The thing is the countries that have nukes right now have processes in place before they can drop their nukes on another country... it is not just one person that says lets drop nuke... there are people behind the scenes and steps they have to go through before a nuke can be used.. If NK gets nukes.... it is the little Fat boy and only him that has the power to say yes or no to use a nuke.... one person in charge and if he says nuke them they will nuke them... if they don't they get executed...

During the Korean War, it was a UN resolution that actually went to war against North Korea in response to their invasion of South Korea. The US just led the UN coalition (which comprised of US, S. Korea, Australian, British, New Zealander, Ethiopian, Colombian, Greek, etc troops).
If those were the remains of dead Australian or Colombian soldiers, I'd also expect their coffins to be draped in the UN flag as they fought under a UN mandate.
Also note that the US never actually declared war on North Korea but rather just opted to lead the UN coalition.

They fought under UN Command and it was a UN Command ceremony. A VFW response to an inquiry regarding a similar hand-off is as follows:
"Thank you for your concern and comments. In response, here is some additional information for your consideration.
There are actually four repatriation ceremonies. The first was at Pyongyang
where no flags were used, but a U.S. military honor guard was used. The second was at Yokota Air base, Japan where the UN flag was used because it was a United Nations Command ceremony. The third will be at Guam where a
U.S. flag will used, and the fourth will be at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii on Nov. 19th where a U.S. flag will be used. The final two ceremonies have not taken place yet.
During the Korean War, U.S. forces who fought against North Korea and China were actually part of the United Nations Command. Other nations such as the United Kingdom and Turkey, among countries, sent some forces to fight against North Korea and China. U.S. military forces made up the overwhelming majority of the UN forces during the Korean War and did most of the fighting, but not all of it.
At UN Command ceremonies, the UN flag is used because it is a UN ceremony. At U.S. repatriation ceremonies, the U.S. flag is used.
When the remains come out of North Korea, it is not always certain that the remains are U.S. remains. Virtually all of the recoveries since 1996 have been probable U.S. remains.
Since the war in Korea ended with an armistice and not a peace treaty, the United Nations Command still exists today and is located in the Republic of Korea. United Nations Command Rear headquarters is located at Camp Zama, Japan.
Before October 1999, every set of Koean War remains that had been returned from North Korea passed through Panmunjom, and were turned over to the United Nations Command first. Then, the remains wre passed on to the United States or another country if the remains were not U.S. military remains.
The U.S. flag is used at all repatriation ceremonies when the remains are returned to U.S. soil."

During the Korean War, it was a UN resolution that actually went to war against North Korea in response to their invasion of South Korea. The US just led the UN coalition (which comprised of US, S. Korea, Australian, British, New Zealander, Ethiopian, Colombian, Greek, etc troops).
If those were the remains of dead Ethiopian or Colombian soldiers, I'd
also expect their coffins to be draped in the UN flag as they fought
      under a UN mandate.
Also note that the US never actually declared war on North Korea but rather
just opted to lead the UN coalition.
