- Yo dawg I herd you like terrariums so we put a terrarium in yo aquarium so you can terrarium while you aquarium. Thanks for introduction Xzibit, now let's make the world's first closed terrarium in an aquarium! Many of you have requested this build and here it finally is. I really hope you enjoy it because I think it's some of my best work yet.

- Information on Sealing the Jar -
In this demonstration, I used a jar that already comes with a gasket and it worked great. However, what if you can't get a hold of this jar or want to use something else? Well if your using a container that is sealed with a cork, you can simply use a “Rubber Stopper.” If you already have container with a lid and it's not leak proof, then you can use the DIY rubber gasket, shown in the video. If none of those options interest you, then you could also make a DIY Oogoo cap. If done properly, I have no doubt that it would work. More information on each item in the links below.

I also recommend that you only use a glass jar. Silicone doesn't readily adhere to plastic, but it sure does work for glass! On that, any sort of 100% silicone (I usually use GE Silicone I) will work fine for this application. Also, you'll do best to stick with a plastic lid, if you're using something ready-made. Metal lids or anything that will contaminate the water column are not advised.
Plants
Below is a complete list of the plants used in this video. I know that many of you will ask where I get my plants. Most of the plants used in the terrarium were sourced locally. The aquarium plants on the other hand were purchased at a few local fish stores and given to yours truly by Justin at H2O Plants. I met up with Justin a few months back to build a terrarium. In return he gave me some of the awesome plants in this video, such as the Hygrophila polysperma 'Sunset' (which you most likely won't be able to obtain in the US, given the nature of this plant). Anyways check out the link below to see what plants he has (this isn't a sponsored video and he didn't ask me to plug this). www.h2oplants.com/

- What Happened to my Fish? -
So I'll keep this brief, but basically here's what happened with my fish. A few months back when it started getting warmer I had to go on a business trip. Before doing so, I did the usual maintenance on all of my aquariums, but something was off with the ones that require warm water. That said, I also have two cold water setups, which weren't affected by this issue. Anyways, I noticed that water was coming out of tap with a lot of white particles in it or that's what it looked like at least. Unfortunately I couldn't find my test kit and I didn't have time to get one because I was leaving the day after.
I was concerned for my fish, but I let the aquariums alone and hoped that the water just needed to clear up. The next day, which was the day I left, the aquariums looked perfectly clear. So I left for my trip, with some peace of mind. However, upon my return I was greeted by a betta and knife fish that had passed. Those were really the only two sensitive fish that I had and unfortunately they are now lost. It's sad, but it's a reality that comes with these hobbies.
When I returned, I did maintenance again and nothing was wrong with the water this time. So once I got a chance to finally test it, nothing seemed out of the ordinary and I haven't had issues since. I trust my brother did take of the animals well, so I strongly believe that this was due to the water. I don't know if the township did something different with the water because of the weather change or if there was something up with my water heater, etc. If you've had this issue before, leave a comment about it below. I've never seen something like it before in the 11 years I've kept fish and they were seemingly healthy the days before my departure.

personally i think covering the lid and part of the jar in moss would look cooler so it looks as if like its been underwater a while like things that get found in rivers and lakes

I think it will look more interesting if you put the terarrium inside a salt water aquarium, corals on the outside, leafy plants in the inside.. 😊👌
That would be pretty awesome! Maybe some day!
Ebenezer Mondez Might look good for a short time like at a show/event. Coraline Algae grows all over everything in saltwater aquariums. The jar would have to be cleaned or scraped ever few days to keep it clear.
plus most reef tanks run on blue-ish lights so the greens of the plants may look subdued. Plus coralline will indeed grow and cover the glass
What about putting a closed Aquarium in a Closed Terrarium in an Aquarium? That would be the next level.
Of course not the aquarium inside the closed terrarium is a terrarium XD
+Averytal wot?
BWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMM
or an aquarium inside an aquarium
the easier next step would be putting this whole aquarium/terrarium into a larger terrarium
I just watched a 12 minute video on aquariums and I wasn't bored for a second of it...Bravo, sir!!
i would like to see ants in that jar with a tube going from that jar into an antfarm so you'd actually have some underwater antbase...
That is the best reply yet! Im gonna do it.
An underwater base..
Will need some airflow though, i think there must be issues not addressed in the video.
@@MrsRabbit8 you could seal two airline hoses in to the lid, one for air going in and one for air going out and just get a cheap air pump on one end
@@gnilrack nice! I like it.
Im totally gonna do it. I've got a paludarium with an island for the ants in the middle, that im constructing. Though my ants have begun to slow for the winter, so I'll need to wait until spring for the move.. plenty of time to construct and stabilize the environment.
AND make one of these badass underwater bases!
Larger tube for in and out of ants.
Smaller tubes for air (with bubbler attached).
Please no more ideas.. I'll never finish! Lol hehehe

Lynn Little it’s a paladarium, something I would love for him to make.
I'm working on a few right now, so stay tuned!
SerpaDesign That’s awesome!
Lynn Little oh I thought they called it earth lool
It would be interesting to see some bugs in the terrarium.
Technically there are because of the spring tails, though they are quite small. I would be pretty cool to see some small beetles, though.

Awesome! I made a diving bell for my little crabs back in the day, reminds me of that. Nice work pushing the envelope!
No lie I was sitting here at home thinking how cool it would be to do that. Congrats man for besting me to the project. It really looks good.
Is it possible to use a round jar for the terrarium, tie some fishing wire/string to the bottom anchored to the bottom of the aquarium's tank so that when the aquarium is filled, you have these small terrariums that look like massive bubbles into other worlds? That's what I want to do when I finally get into making *Worldariums* (Yes I made that word up just for this situation XD)
CraftyMaelyss omg that would look so cool
Crafty ... maybe clear light bulbs, hollowed out? Otherwise, custom glass work to get the bubble effect. Coolest idea ever. (Also possibly the hardest)
Microverse
"Q-Quick Mor-*burp*-Morty! We gotta-we gotta see why the power stopped!"
Sorry I couldn't resist.
my mynd suggested clear light bulbs... perhaps clear glass Christmas ornaments (available at craft stores and dollar stores very soon if not already) would work? But you'd have to come up with your own seal because I don't think they come with air-tight/water-tight lids..... Maybe some more of that silicone stuff once the terrarium is built.
This is actually one of the coolest things I've ever seen! Subbed!
I AGREE!!! It's actually quite brilliant, creative and VERY unique!

I honestly have no idea why this video was in my recommendations but I must say, I'm rather glad it was. This is pretty amazing. I love the way it turned out. You must take a lot of pride in what you do with these aquariums... Very creative. Thanks for sharing!
I’d live in there
Dont you need *W A T E R* to live?
Original Fish genious comment 🤣😂🤣🤟🏻 i agree btw. Or at least would b cool to choose when to go in.
I agree with you about the jar lid. Moss would look great! Maybe you can superglue some mesh to it so the moss has a better surface to cling to.
Snow Willow I disagree. The moss in the jar kind of blends in. You need the bright, obvious lid to bring people's attention to the fact that you have a dry ecosystem down there!
I understand your point, although I think the glass jar is enough of a visual draw in the tank. It doesn’t blend in for me at all. But I can agree that maybe green moss would be too similar to the other plants. I’m not against the lid being a focal point as long as it’s for the right reasons. To me the white plastic is distracting and makes the whole set up look too “new”. If it was my tank I would want the terrarium to seem as if it was a lost treasure, something that could have been submerged for years. A rusted lid, maybe something with peeling paint or even a copper patina (sealed of course to be aquarium safe) would make the whole tank look mature, while still making the terrarium a standout feature. This is just my opinion though. Design is incredibly subjective.
You sir are by far the most informative Terrarium builder I've come across, I stumbled onto you a couple months back and hit subscribe as you got me hooked on Terrarium building as my new found hobby. The lid would be better black. Going to be difficult to perform maintenance on the terrarium; I wonder if it would be possible to attach it in such a way that you could remove it. Perhaps using hooks and eyelets hidden under rocks or substrate.

You’ve aided in keeping people mentally healthy with your videos during lockdown here thanks dude.
I'm pretty sure you had phosphates in your tap water, its pretty common and safe to humans, but it probably isn't that safe for fish.
I'm also talking about your previous fish that passed, not this tank.
I've always used rainwater for anything aquarium based. But thats only freshwater native aquariums.
You are absolutely correct. I've used a product to correct Ph levels and increase Kh by seachem called "neutral regulator". The regulator itself is phosphate based. The next day I noticed tons of tiny little white particles just as he described in the video description. Maybe the city had to use phosphates to treat the water supply and those phosphates found their way into the tank through a recent water change.
i watched this like a year ago when it was posted but is there an update on this? howa the terrarium now and did you add fish to the aquarium? thanks
That is just way too cool man!!!❤️❤️❤️
I love this idea.❤👍👍🙂
This idea is similar to something I thought up this morning.
I was picturing how a few mini (open or closed) terrariums would look if they were floating on top of the water of an aquarium.
Another idea was a few small aquariums joined together by clear tubes to allow the fish to move between them and lookout towers with or without a globe at their tops for each aquarium.
Only wish the lid of the jar was not white
It won't be for long. Something will grow on it..
Das raycis!
@@edmanrapperu I see what you did there.....

I find that, especially for a person that doesn't like to go out much, these things are absolutely genius. All you really need to keep one is dirt, stones, (maybe bugs, your preference.) And plants!
3:55 You just sealed the fate of young Anakin Wormwalking.
What would be cooler would be if you made the terrium a 1 way valve. And use the air pump which would be hidden in the substrate (the tube) then the air goes from the pump, through the terrarium then bubbles out the terrarium. Having air flow would also aid to reduce fogging the terrarium.
DannyBeatzEnterprise it would dry
David Garcia Jr.
Yet another good opportunity to add some plants that totally stand out inside an aquarium. Imagine cacti and succulents in there, with a bit of white sand.
ivanlagrossemoule the aquarium would have to be drained often to be able to water the cacti, as they can't be constantly kept moist like these plants, but it would be worth it.
It should be possible to work around this somehow, but I think the biggest weakness here is simply that the terrarium doesn't stand out at all.
DannyBeatzEnterprise If you were running an air line anyway, you could thread a narrow water line through it. Secured beneath the substrate ahead of time in the terrarium, you could then squirt water through every once in a while, IV bag style.
Admirable!
I would love too see how this build is holding up it looks amazing
