  • The Rhodesian forces produced some of the finest fighting soldiers and airmen of the era and Andrew Standish-White, who served in C Squadron SAS, is one of those men. This is a freshly edited version of episode 50 of the Fighting Men of Rhodesia series. The original episode was 1hr 35min long and this edit is half that. It remains one of my favorites!

These stories are always welcome. Every time I listen to the experiences of the veterans I feel sad for the sacrifices of good men and women and the loss of their nation to a mob with problematic attitudes and behaviours.

Great information sharing Stan, I always feel so disgusted that we (SA) did not do more for Rhodesia. You guys should have been our 5th province. It would have been fun and games then. We would of been a powerhouse of note.

The SADF did plenty. It never ceased to amaze me how much equipment came in to Rhodesia in 1979. We shared everything.

The "banker tribe" would not allow such. They control U.S., England, Russia AND China. This was accomplished by destroying all monarchies and national socialist countries from the early 1900's through 1945. Syria, Libya, Iraq, Afghabistan... all were toppled to bring them under control of those same bankers.
Now we know why Europeans are never allowed their own countries. Rhodesia survived for fourteen years on its own. Miraculous considering the banker armies/resources leveraged against them. So do not be too hard on yourselves for Rhodesia passing into the history books.

I was in the ward right next to Frans Botha in Kariba. I remember the nurses rushing around closing all the ward doors because a casavac was coming in. The veranda around the wards had breeze bricks so when the Allouette came in and landed in the front car park there was dust. Mashisha and matusvhi in the corridors from the chopper. I remember Frans waddling on his daily walks. Spoke to him daily until I headed back to my unit. Never once did he whinge. Lots of laughs

So very interesting - the ‘fat man’ always escaped before the good guys arrived. I wonder who the mole/s were?
Great story and love hearing Stan talk. Absolutely brilliant. Th is to John and Hannes.

Sometime in either late ‘80 or very early ‘81 (probably) I had business in the High Court on Jameson Avenue. It was late afternoon, perhaps around 4pm and I pressed the button on the lift on the top floor. I was dressed in a business suit. While I waited for the lift to appear I became aware of someone standing next to me also waiting.
When the lift doors opened, I stepped followed by a burly and solitary person. It was Joshua Nkomo. As the two of us rode the lift down, it occurred to me that the man didn’t have any bodyguards accompanying him - they were probably waiting for him on the ground floor. At the time I was armed, carrying my Colt Python .357 Magnum revolver in a concealed shoulder rig.
On the ride down it occurred to me that he was responsible for the shooting down of the two Air Rhodesia Viscounts. If I had planned to kill him this would have been an opportunity.
The fat man exited the lift ahead of me and met his bodyguards. I have been thinking about this encounter ever since.

One of the "white Captives" is still going strong and doing very well for himself and lives in Ndola. We have discussed the story with him on numerous occasions.

I dont know if you guys were aware that we ( SA) had a mechanized battalion sitting just outside Messina during the elections, I was a national service Ratel driver at that time. I presume there was no drama with your elections. After about 6 weeks, we returned to base and went back to the border (SWA)
