Crested Francolin (Ortygornis sephaena) Bird Call Video - Common Groundbirds Of Africa
The Crested Francolin (Ortygornis sephaena) is a common ground bird found throughout the Kruger National Park. There are a number of sub species of the Crested Francolin, with the most recognised one (Once considered to be the same species of Francolin), being the Kirk's Francolin.
The Crested Francolin is a charming bird found in the grasslands and woodlands of the Kruger National Park. These birds are easily recognisable by their distinctive plumage, which features a mix of brown, white, and black feathers, adorned with a unique crest on their heads that can be raised or flattened. This crest is not just for show; it serves as a signal during social interactions and mating displays. Crested Francolins are ground-dwellers, often seen foraging for seeds, insects, and small invertebrates, especially alongside the roads of the Kruger National Park. Their preference for ground-level activity makes them adept at blending into their surroundings, using their coloration as camouflage against predators.
Socially, Crested Francolins are quite gregarious, often found in small family groups or loose flocks. They communicate using a variety of calls, the most notable being a series of loud, piercing whistles that can be heard over considerable distances, particularly during the early morning and late afternoon. These vocalisations serve multiple purposes, including marking territory and coordinating movements within their groups. During the breeding season, males engage in elaborate courtship displays, which include puffing up their feathers, strutting, and showcasing their crests to attract females. Nesting on the ground in shallow scrapes lined with grass and leaves, they lay clutches of up to six eggs, ensuring the next generation of these fascinating birds continues to thrive.
This video of the Crested Francolin was filmed in the Kruger National Park, on one of the gravel roads (They love getting in the way), and in the background of this bird call video, you can hear the Crested Francolin bird call. Very distinctive, and the Crested Francolin does call throughout the day, although mostly heard at sunrise and sunset.
