Porky The Male Leopard Of The H10 - Often Seen Near Tshokwane - Kruger Park Leopards
"Porky" as he is affectionately known, is a large male Leopard in prime condition, that occupies territory around the main tar roads of the h10, H1-2 and H1-3 near Tshokwane Picnic Spot in the southern Kruger National Park. He is a famous Leopard, and gets his name from his amazing ability to successfully hunt and kill Porcupines, seeming to come out unscathed every time - although the scars on his face tell another story.
I have seen Porky twice at the time of posting this, once up a tree adjacent to the N'waswitsontso River (Very tough, busy and obscured sighting), and then this sighting, which was just about 100 meters south of Tshokwane Picnic Spot, and close to where I saw him a year earlier. Porky the Leopard seems to like the Tshokwane region, so there must be a lot of Porcupines around the area! There are healthy amounts of predators in this region, as prey species are plentiful.
This sighting was lucky and fairly short. We were the third car at the sighting, so I presume this Leopard just popped up or crossed the road. He eventually moved off into the thick woodland.
Porky has been seen as far south as Silolweni Dam and Nkumbe View Point, and is known to patrol close up towards Mazithi Dam, where there is a large Lion population. I think he has an even larger territory than this, but this is just based on my readings and research. I really hope I can see this beautiful male Leopard, known as Porky, at least once more in the future.
In the background of this Leopard video, you will hear the bird calls of the Black-crowned Tchagra, Brubru, Burchell's Coucal and Diederik Cuckoo, to name a few.
