The Playful Leopard Vs The Dwarf Mongoose - Ulusaba Game Reserve In The Sabi Sands
We were so fortunate enough to see this young Leopard, stalk and attempt to hunt a a gang of Dwarf Mongoose, both of which are very entertaining animals. Leopards are opportunistic predators, part of the Big 5, and probably the most sort after and appreciated member of the Big 5. Leopards are elusive, but in the Sabi Sands Nature Reserve in the Greater Kruger National Park, they are quite a common find - the field guides and rangers are highly trained and know exactly what to look for and how to track Leopards.
The African Leopard of the Greater Kruger National Park have a varied diet. They will literally hunt and eat anything; a few examples: Beetles, Mice, Lizards, Snakes, Fish, Hares, Impala, Wildebeest, Giraffe. The Leopards of the Kruger National Park are beautiful, fascinating and elusive, and seeing them is a treat, but seeing them interact like this is truly amazing, and what a once in a lifetime safari is all about.
There was a gang of Dwarf Mongoose (The smallest carnivore in Africa) foraging and digging in the dirt road for prey items, when out of nowhere this Leopard stalked and tried to pounce on an individual from the group of the Mongoose. This Leopard eventually watched on and the Dwarf Mongoose almost made fun of it by continuing to forage. This was in the Ulusaba Game Reserve, owned by Sir Richard Branson, and guided by my good friend Brandon Birch - an excellent and accomplished field guide.
