    Is this the beginning of many slams to come for Coco Gauff? Is she the next women's #1 in 2024?

    Coco excellent defense during the game is what made the difference.

    It was the second game that chraged coco up. When coco was chasing volleies. That shook sabalenka. Then coco started sending sab chasing vollies. That depleted sab. Sab sound when from loud "whew" to exhausted "whe" I knew she done then. She started making crazy errors.

    As for the Ben Shelton comparison, i think his main goal was to be unpredictable (yes more often than not that would include lighting up a forehand) whereas Sabalenka really hit EVERY ball as hard as she could. In the third set Ben actually mixed it up nicely and was close to taking the set from Novak.

    • @TennisUnleashed
      @TennisUnleashed  Před 9 měsíci +2

      There we’re definitely parallels between the two matches but you’re correct that Ben was able to reign it in against Novak in the 3rd set once he realized straight power wasn’t going to get the job done. I covered that in my men’s final preview video.
      It would have been nice though if someone had communicated that to Ben before they started, no matter what anyone says you aren’t going to overpower Novak, he’s too good to let that happen.
      Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    "Citius, Altius, Fortius" American style of sports at the youth level is too fixated on pure athleticism and physicality. At the most elite levels of international sports skill and the mental prowess play are the difference makers.

    The difference in this match was coaching. Sabalenka has the skill set to be a great player but her tennis IQ is extremely poor. Trying to paint the lines hitting as hard as you can will get to many semis and 1/4s but not many championships. Even when Gauff was running side to side defending her laser shots she just refuse to come to the net for the high % shots. Instead she stood on the line firing more lasers trying to paint the lines with low % shots. Making a ton of unforced errors.
    Gauff came in hitting high % shots of medium power knowing that Sabalenka is error prone. She never wavered even after losing the 1st set. Brad Gilbert is a genius.
    I know she's #1 but if she wants to win majors and turn around her record of like 7semi-final to 1 major she has to get better coaching. After all you are in it to win it. She is extremely talented but poorly coached.

      @TennisUnleashed  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Those are all great points. At the pro level a lot of times the coach is limited by what the player is willing to do. I’m wondering if Sabalenka is resistant to playing in anyway but with pure power? It might be resistance on her end.

    Seemed like most of Gauff’s returns were short- mid court. Was this her plan? I thought that deeper returns were a typical goal.

    • @TennisUnleashed
      @TennisUnleashed  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Definitely weaker in her return game in the 1st set which let Sabalenka dictate more easily. 100% correct on wanting your returns deeper in general to start the point without a defect.

    i have to admit , i was a Gauff hater , cuz i was well aware of her potential but hated seeing her losing si many macthes to Iga and always falling short in the big moments but god damnit she really turned it around , Brad and Piere are geniuses who brought her to her first slam of many !!!

      She was and still is a teenager. Irrational to expect a teenager to be as consistent as a professional in their mid-late 20s prime.

    • @TennisUnleashed
      @TennisUnleashed  Před 9 měsíci +2

      Ahhhh….she used what you said to fuel her victory ;) Well done coach ;) I’m glad she was able to do that mentally. Not everyone can turn a negative into a positive like that. Happy for Covo, first saw her play at the Easter Bowl in 2014 when she was just 10 years old. She was playing the 12’s and was winning rounds. Also met her dad there while watching her and working for USTA player development.
      The USTA was already charting her progress at that age because of he well she was doing in tournaments. Happy to see her 9 years later win her first slam.

      Agreed. Her power game has worked so well she forgot you can play tennis without obliterating every shot. Great player but she needs to work on adjusting her game plan based on her opponent.

    This match turned first game second set. Sabalenka. won the first set fairly easily. Momentum was clearly on her side. Gauff began the second set. She quickly went down 15-40. If Sabalenka breaks here, I believe she would have closed the match out quickly, 6-2 or 6-4. A Break here would have taken the crowd...100% Gauff... out of the match. Moving forward Sabalenka has to find a way to reduce her lows during a match. She shows tremendous peaks and drastic lows all in one match. Witness set one against Madison Keys. Power will always be the center of Sabalenka's game. And it should be. However, touch also has it's place. I believe Sabalenka has the potential to dominate the Woman's game.
