    At your height you would make a good AFL ruckman. After every goal, out of bounds or stoppage in play the umpire usually bounces (sometimes throws up) the ball up and the two opposing ruckmen tap down the ball (similar to a basketball center ball up) to their team mates.
    One American basketballer, Mason Cox has made the transition to playing Aussie rules football in the AFL. There are several other international players from various other sports that have played in AFL.

    A couple of things from the video
    - When they show the scoreboard, they mean goals, behinds, and total score. So when they show Collingwood's score, they mean 20 goals (worth 6 each), 10 behinds, (worth 1 each), and a total score of 130. Same goes with Carlton.
    - When they explain marking the ball, that actually just means any time someone catches a ball on the full after it has been kicked by any player on the field. The marks showed are some of the best in recent years, but only a handful of players are skilled enough to leap like that and hold those marks consistently.
    - Every week the AFL selects a mark of the week and goal of the week, with each entry being nominated for mark of the year or goal of the year. If a player wins either one, they get a pretty cool prize (I think it's a car?). Those awards are presented alongside the Brownlow Medal, which is the equivalent of the MVP. Umpires vote each match for the best 3 players on the field, and the player with the most votes at the end of the season wins the most prestigious award in the AFL! (unless they've been suspended for breaking the rules, you should watch 'Andrew Gaff's hit on Brayshaw', it was pretty nasty!)
    - Hope you actually get into this sport a little and watch the Grand Final that's coming up! It would be awesome to see the sport played more regularly around the world, and hopefully you'll be able to get down to the MCG for a match one day!

    Its cool watching you guys react to this sport and how big it is. To be honest I live in Western Sydney and AFL is no where near as big here as it is in the rest of the country. I went on holidays in Melbourne and it was like someone flicked a switch on the weekend and put everyone in a footy shirt. Even my wife and I were surprised and we live in Aus. Its massive around the country. We have a game called rugby league (which don't really care for myself), which is bigger than AFL in NSW, but not even close to AFL on a national scale.

    First finals Sydney V Greater Western Sydney,Melbourne V Geelong, Hawthorn V Richmond, West Coast Eagles V Collingwood.
    Because of the position of the ladder the top 4 get two chances to get in to the final.
    Greater Western Sydney won so Sydney eliminated
    Melbourne won so Geelong eliminated.
    West Coast still to play against Collingwood (just started)
    Richmond straight to semi final two weeks from now
    Next Week Melbourne play Hawthorn(second chance)
    Loser of West Coast V Collingwood play Greater Western Sydney(2nd chance) next week and the winner (as with Richmond) goes to the Semi in two weeks time.
    Both winners of the Semi finals go to the Grand Final 3 weeks from now. Usually last Saturday in September.
    Hope this helps.

    I've converted over to being an AFL fan from being a die-hard rugby league supporter as i hail from traditional rugby league state of Queensland... I still support rugby league but am more into AFL nowadays... some fun things i found about AFL:
    1) its played on an oval field which means alot of variety and things happening compared to guys running up and down and tackling each other on a square rugby league field...where everything is pretty much predictable...AFL however has alot of unpredictability
    2) At the start of the game all teams run through banners that are created by their dedicated supporter group fans..
    3) Generally seating behind each ends of the goal posts are designated for the home team fans and the opposition team fans... these groups of fans are known as "cheer squads"...they carry flags, large banners, and big pompoms which they wave around when their team scores a goal (kicked through the middle posts)...or they wave around and boo to distract the opposition team from kicking a goal..
    4) each teams club song is played as they run out onto the field (and through the banners)..the good thing is at full time - the winning team's song is played again...even if its a visiting opposition team - their song is still played, allowing the fans to have a few minutes of celebration...how awesome is it to have your team's club song played at the home ground of a hated team? its awesome because you can really rub crap in and bask in the moment of victory...
    5) its a fashion thing - its pretty cool going to a game as fans will wear scarves and beanies, or hoodie jackets, have their face painted or even dress up...
    6) generally when at the game you don't know how long is left in the quarter, the clock that ticking and on display near the scoreboard is only timing how long has progressed in that quarter...so being at the game its full of suspense and being on the edge of your seat, especially in the 4th and final quarter and your team is up by 5 points - you don't know how long is left and so you are hoping and praying the final siren sounds before the opposition scores a goal... however the coaches sitting up in the coaches boxes in the stadium (with a birds eye view of the game), actually have TVs showing the live game and how long is left before the quarter ends... when you are watching the game at home on TV, there is a timer on there showing how long left in the quarter...however this is not so live at the game...which makes it interesting and fun...
    7) once you have been introduced to afl - its like a religion! you are hooked and cant get enough! trust me - i was a loyal rugby league fan, i still follow rugby league but i would pick watching an AFL game any day over rugby league...

  • @dutchroll
    @dutchroll Před 5 lety

    I didn't see if anyone clarified the bouncing in addition to the brief mention in the video, but basically when you decide to run with the ball as opposed to passing (hand-balling) or kicking, there is a "travel" rule sort of like basketball has. At least every 15 metres (ie, about 16 yards) the ball must be bounced or otherwise touch the ground. Naturally it's the umpire's judgment when this rule is infringed and you do occasionally get a generous interpretation of the rule. There is a technique to successfully bounce the ball on the run, but with it's oval shape, there's not too much margin for error before it can all go wrong. Of course the pro players are expected to be able to do it in their sleep.

    At 6'10" tall, you'd be highly sought after. They'd teach you to play the game if you've got any ball coordination. You could be a ruckman or a full-forward that just marks & kicks goals because at the end of the game when everyone else is exhausted you're still 6'10" tall. Jumping at the end is incredibly taxing. There's an American NBA player that plays for Collingwood, Mason Cox. He's about an inch taller than you but has become a very good footballer...

    you might do a reaction to todays Grand Final. was a hell of a game, littetally decided only in the last 2 minutes. but i wanted to let you know about Mason Cox, a Texas kid, playing college hoops that went to an AFL combine in the States and gpt drafted to play for Collingwood Magpies. he is now given the title American Pie (pie being short for mag'pie'}.
    here is a story, i think it would make an interesting story to follow, he had a great transition and mega year on ground.

    3:23 well it’s awesome when done right. What’s not so awesome is boys who think they’re so cool jumping on top of you and pretending to take a “specky” (slang for spectacular mark) for no real reason at all and crashing you to the ground and digging they’re shoes into you’re back. From experience and living with 3 brother it really hurts. But yes when done correctly it looks pretty cool.

    They don't really explain the scoreboard
    They give the example: Collingwood 20 10 130
    But they don't explain this
    It is goals (six points), behinds (1 point), and then total.
    SO it's 20 goals = 10 points = 130
    ((20x6)+(10x1))=130

    Australia is a bit weird when it comes to footy were very divided by state to what code of footy you support like my home state of Queensland we have two afl teams but afl is not very popular its never shown on mainstream tv its always on secondary channels in my state rugby league is the more popular sport the same as in New South Wales as well

    • @NepDaStep
      @NepDaStep  Před 5 lety

      Definitely love the Aussie rules man it’s an awesome sport

    • @MrBrandonDylan
      @MrBrandonDylan Před 5 lety

      I wouldn't say "not very popular". Maybe "not as popular" as league in QLD. But after three Lions Premierships, it has definately grown. AFL's popularity in QLD is bigger than League's popularity in AFL states (the majority of Australia). NRL wins the TV viewers battle, but AFL has 10 times the crowds because AFL people actually go to the games.

    • @jo902100
      @jo902100 Před 5 lety

      yeah thats fair but don't think its right to say they have ten times the crowd especially in Brisbane last time i went to a lions game the gabba was virtually empty compared to a broncos game

    • @MrBrandonDylan
      @MrBrandonDylan Před 5 lety

      Well that's just Brisbane...when you go nationally, the AFL has crowds the NRL could only dream of.

    • @jo902100
      @jo902100 Před 5 lety

      i am not disputing at all simply stating that Australia when it comes to football it is divided by state if you move to QLD your not going to have huge crowds at the AFL as compared to League but if you go to Melbourne or South Australia of Course you are

  • @alexthefootballlegend1320

    I went to the MCG
