    Very interesting kit! The things wrapped in the gauze are smelling salts. You squeeze them and a glass container brakes open saturating the gauze.

      Just dont sniff them, smellung salts pack a punch they were meant to wake you up if you fainted i think

      When I moved into my house there was an old first aid kit left in the garage. The only item in the kit was one of those things. I had no idea what it was and I did crack it and smell it, had the opposite effect I ALMOST FAINTED. Could not believe how potent it was, felt like my nose was burning.

      My wife and I have found a few old med kits or supplies in thrift stores and the like over the years. All of the old stuff ends up in the China cabinet. The last one we bought had five or six of those in it and looked to be at least from the early ninetees. They now are each within there own little container, because after 30 to 50 years old, who really knows what they do now.

    Always interesting to see you with these "new" kits. The bandage was for a sling or large wounds. Most of that stuff, is definitely pre-1980s. I think, my parents had some of that stuff? I know my Dad, definitely did. He worked for the railroad and, he had a stock of medical supplies, he kept in his vehicle. Watching things like this, kinda takes me back.

    That "scalpel blade" is actually a #11 X-acto blade. True medical scalpels are very different.

    I would say those tubes are smelling salts. Great kit though, remember my grandparents having smelling salts in their first aid kit.

    These sort of kits where fairly common in the 70s I remember my father having one for the car in a differently shaped box.

    Little late watching this 1. The long capsules with the cotton in 1 end and the paper type sleeve over the top might be insect bite relief. You are supposed to take that sleeve and put it on the other end and crush it with your fingers. Then tip it so the stuff inside soaks into the cotton end. Then you rub on the affected area. At least those are the types I have seen and used.

    The empty one might be the oral thermometer. The one you have might be the rectal thermometer.

    • @David_Rafuse
      @David_Rafuse Před rokem

      I think the empty plastic case might actually be to hold/protect thermometer for rectal insertion. When checking body core temperature to assess for hypothermia, you wouldn't want a broken glass thermometer stuck up your ring-piece ☹

  • @dougbotimer8005
    @dougbotimer8005 Před 3 lety +1

    Rectal thermometer is better for checking body temperature in hypothermia cases.

  • @tenchraven

    You know its ancient when not only has Merthiolate in it, but the old school stuff with mercury. No criticism for not knowing that one, it is an antiseptic kind of like mercuochrome- with both, the screams from the injured just means it's working. The Betadine is a povidone-iodine brand name, and largely replaced the other two. A kit this age has certainly been tinkered with, with that 2nd thermometer. Wish you'd shown the larger one in better detail- I bet it goes high and low as a hypo/hyperthermia thermometer. Because you've got an old and new thermometer, I bet the one in the white case is newer and alcohol based. And yes, that one has a rounded tip, so... ewww. The person who had this updated components, never removed the old ones- packrat!

  • @collectingonthecheap56353

    I would say that the best chance to identify age of kit, is to check that booklet for a copyright date.

    Those are Amonia inhalers in case of fainting snap them wave under patients nose .

  • @kathimorrical9912

    Ok you're killing me. Ammonia in smelling salts, marriage is alcohol based antiseptic. The long swab may be for the Bernadine, good for cuts and scrapes and deeper wounds. Mending kit for sewing, clothing or people. Think the "padded pad" is for burns. Red tip on flat end of thermometer is rectal, blue oral. Probably is mercury if '67 vintage. Good little kit.

    Mercury thermometers are hard to find now, cos they're "banned" because people think the world will end if you drop one, much like how they think a building needs the deep-clean crews come in if they drop a fluorescent tube or CFL, when in reality it's not anywhere near actually that bad... :P

    When a plastic case is made in the USA you know its old, China can make that for 5 cents including labor and shipping.
