I felt my mom instinct kick in when I saw Hi Ren and it hasnât gone away. Ren and Chinchilla have a song called How to Be Me about his friend who committed suicide. Itâs so unique I have never heard anything quite like it. The live version is what I watched. đâ€

People aren't used to people being so honest, especially strangers. When it happens, like with REN, our minds really struggle with figuring out how to deal with it. He has the gift of making us feel the way he feels.

I keep telling myself to stop watching Ren reactions or at least commenting on so many of them, but you guys floored me instant sub! - you echo so much of what many of us feel in regards to Ren's music. If you do his Full Trilogy of Jenny/Screech and Violet (in this order only) brace yourself for the emotion. If you want to mix it up and do a different vibe, more upbeat - check his band's the Big Push live busking with Ren's amazing singing and Romain's magic guitar solos - I shot the sheriff, bongo bong, Englishman in NY, war pigs or his outstanding rap - bittersweet symphony (verve retake), power, or mixes with another amazing singer Eden Nash in Ocean and Humble - sooo good!
Everyone watches this feels the same emotions. Lovely to see. Such a strong message and so special talent. Should be everywhere on every channel every radio. This is proper music from the heart.

Thank you for your genuine heartfelt reaction; you two are beautiful souls. "Chalk Outlines" touches me deeply no matter how many times I watch this video or hear this song. I can very much relate to this and many of his other songs as they describe my daily struggle over the past 25+ years. Ren has been able to express through his songs what I have been unsuccessfully trying to communicate to others regarding my mental, emotional, and physical struggles. I would recommend you also check out Ren's other collaboration with Chinchilla, the "How to Be Me" live version, as well as their busking sessions in Brighton. As for "Chalk Outlines," it is one of my favorite songs right now; it is beautiful yet sad.
The studio version is also incredible. However, in my personal opinion, it does not come close to the live version. This performance is so much more raw, emotional, and visceral, and Chinchilla's performance here elevates the song to a whole new plain. I wish the live version would be available on Spotify.
Someone (Obj Owl @JoesTheBestInTheWorl) shared his interpretation, I think fittingly so, âThe sound of the folding chair opening up fills the empty space with echoes emanating from the walls and then diminishes. Ren uses this to compose the song, with Chalk Outlines representing the empty space that he feels within. Chinchilla, who also emerges from the walls and echos Ren throughout and suitably for an echo, has the last word, leaving a dark empty space. It's dark on the gallows.â
Given Ren's medical history, I interpret this song to address mental illness diagnoses, and prescription psychotropics, which leave you emotionally dead (hence, the chalk outlines around your dead self). I can attest to the reality of this; for over 15 years, I was prescribed a cocktail of max doses of psychotropics, including Sertraline, until I decided to carefully wean myself off all medications in 2014. The side effects of the drugs were too many and too severe, left me an emotional zombie, and the benefits were negligible. I still struggle with my mental health and physical symptoms daily, but I rather feel pain than nothing at all.

If you want to see something completely different, "Ren - Losing It (FISHER rap retake)" might be a good one and also any video from the band named The Big Push of which Ren is/was a member. I must of seen way over 100 of these reaction videos about Ren across Hi Ren, Sick Boi, The Tales of Jenny and Screech and Chalk Outlines and How to be Me... This reaction has eclipsed everything I have seen. Watching the emotion you went through is like watching myself in a mirror each time I hear this song...don't be apologetic.... The feelings you have *are* important, and they *do* matter. Ren's music gives us a safe place to evoke deep, powerful emotions, and that is a true gift.
For me, his music makes me feel more alive and also more compassion & empathy for others. His music makes me *want* to be a better person, and for that reason, I believe those feelings are valid and important.
I keep coming back to this reaction. Y'all are wonderful people. If Ren and Chinchilla were a painting Ren would surely be the subject matter of the painting but Chinchilla is definitely the source of light in the painting showcasing all of the shadows cast, but all of the bare parts of Ren that he lets us see she helps us to see it so well.
