Always generous of you to include other enthusiasts who are passionate about their gear and not always having the latest, greatest, trendiest, etc. It is so important for all to understand that everyone hears differently; music, room, gear, and most important....Their Ears! It goes on and on. Very cool. F
Hello Michael- You sir have great taste in audio gear and have a very nice system. It's cool that you record onto the reels from your CD's, I still like watching the VU meters and the tape running at 15 IPS on an old Crown machine. I have a pair of McIntosh MC75 mono amps and a McIntosh C22 preamp, they are made not far from where I live in upstate New York. I used to have a pair of La Scala's from the 1980's, very nice sound.
Now to me, this is a wonderful video. I know every single piece of equipment he showed and I love it all. Even though he didn't talk about any audio philosophy or big picture thoughts on HiFi, his enthusiasm for great sound shows through, even just naming off the pieces he has in his system. I love it.
Michael, I totally understand how you feel about buying McIntosh gear. It’s the same way I felt and was finally able to afford a full McIntosh system a few years ago. Never regretted buying it.😊
Steve, thanks for introducing me to my long lost brother. I can tell by his analysis of what he has and why he has it that he must be my slightly older sibling. While I don't call it "old school", McIntosh has always been my consummate desire and, like Mike, I wanted it as a youngster and purchased it as an oldster. While I opted for the Forte II, the LaScala was neck and neck until the very end. I am not sure what it is, but given the number of people who have made the connection between McIntosh and Klipsch, there must be something more than just chance involved. Looks like Michael has found happiness...He 'wants' what he 'has'. Wish everyone could be that fortunate.
Yes as old as you and feel the same. When I was younger and these manufacturers were not called vintage but top of the line and made to last. Thanks for showing us your excellent system!
the beauty of Klipsch is the super efficiency of them 1 or 2 watts and you are entertaining or pissing off the neighbors like Paul Klipsch used to say.
Beautiful system! I’ve always wanted MacIntosh components but I’m not quite there yet .... I did get a pair of La scala AL5 in March of ‘23 and they absolutely fill the 1500sqf of room I’m using them in with their amazing neutral sound ! I’m running them with a leak 230 and at 75wpc it has plenty of power for these easy to drive speakers, as well as compliment their mid century modern design for a very cohesive look and sound !

I see in the comments, many viewers are enjoying this format... meeting guys who are into their audio systems with your casual friendly style and getting a tour of their systems and sharing their enthusiasm. Guys with real-world systems are just as interesting as money-no-object systems... maybe more... seeing where they have spent money and where they have held back to keep within a budget. I have speakers I built with my son, so even if I end up with high end source and amplifier components, the speakers stay... everyone has a story.
I’ve been an “audiophile” since I was in the 8th grade, and a Mac/Klipsch system was always the dream. There are more expensive brands, and there are more technologically advanced brands, but in all these years, few systems are as musically satisfying .
I had La Scala back in the early 70's and loved them. Definitely not a portable speaker. I had a Mac 6100 integrated amp with 85 watts a side and a Marantz model 20 tuner with the o scope tuner.
We would’ve like to have heard your impressions of you various equipment, but thanks for letting us into your abode and showing us your cool stuff. Also thanks for keeping the relationship talk to a minimum.
Great system Michael. Thank you for sharing with us. I am also a big fan of both Klipsch and McIntosh. Because of the music I listen to I prefer the Cornwalls but anything Klipsch is good.
I just realized the reel-to-reel Michael has in the middle is the same one Mia played in the movie Pulp Fiction... and that was an interesting scene you can google for.
I am so impressed , what a fantastic music system you have. You obviously enjoy it, that comes through and you are a nice bloke. That is quite evident too. Thank you for sharing with us.
I bought my LaScala ll's used but in brand new condition for $900.00 last year. Haven't even hooked em up yet because I don't have a place of my own, so they sit in my storage waiting to delight my soul with music. Can't wait to set them up...soon🤞
NOW that is REAL system. Easily the best system you have shown on here Steve, yours with the Forte IIIs installed gets runner up ;) Michael has excellent taste, very classy system. Mac and Klipsch Heritage is a match made in heaven. Both built to the highest quality right here in our great country and will last you a lifetime. They've also outlasted and continue to out perform (IMHO) all of the trendy audio fads that have come and gone in speakers and gear. The fully horn loaded Klipsch's (KHorn and La Scala) will give even speakers costing 4 times as much a run for their money. I've heard 90K dynamic speakers, and many others 50-80K range and prefer my newer model closed back khorns anyday. I personally however like the La Scala more for custom Home Theater since they roll off around 50hz in the bass, which is an easy xover as most subs can xover at 50hz. The La Scalas are awesome as 3 screen speakers giving you authentic vintage theater style soumd. A guy on CZcams (Youthman) did this. KHorns I like as dedicated stereo or as hybrid stereo/TV speakers, the latter of which is how I use mine. Will do movies incredible as long as you have a good sub (Preferably REL) that is capable of being crossed over at fullrange of the speaker (~34-39hz). That results in some of the deepest, cleanest and tightest bass I have heard.
I agreed. That's really great stuff. I love LaScalas and have heard my Klipschorns with McIntosh tubes and it was really wonderful. I'm sure that system really sings! Gotta love a guy who can have exactly what he likes and has the taste that Michael does.
I love my LaScalas, had them since 1994 what wonderful speakers. I still have my old Marantz gear and just can’t find myself investing more in my system, but I enjoy having speakers that make normal folks go wow 😃
You might want to try a simple good tube amplifier, from just a few hundred dollars, 2 Watts and up are fine, 10 Watts is more than needed, and find out the speakers can sound incredibly much more beautiful than any common transistor amp can provide. Real class A transistor will sound great too but a little cold compared to tubes. But those transistors are kind of expensive.
Excellent system Sir!!! I hope one day I can duplicate my late brother's system, he started out with a McIntosh MC2105 amp, Crown preamp, and Altec Lansing model 19's!! 😍
Thanks for sharing man! I know McIntosh supposedly isn’t what it used to be but like you I have lusted after a system like that since I was a kid....43 now....so maybe in 20 years or so we can talk gear! Take Care
I like the Zenith Trans Oceanic that shows up in the shot! I have one, just put new tubes in it; picking up some really weak random shortwave in the amature band. The stereo is also very nice.
I have the older one piece La Scala's. Three watt tube amplification per channel is plenty. I'm shocked to hear 75 watt is just fine😂. With the sensitivity of 106dB 1W/1m. PW Klipsch famously said, "What the world needs now is a good 5 Watt amplifier" And he was completely right.
Hi Sir; Hope you'll enjoy your wonderful system for decades to come. May I respectfully suggest protecting your beautiful La Scalas from what seems to be sunlight showing in the video? Thanks a lot Steve for another interesting and enjoyable presentation. Blessings for y'all.
For ergonomics-sake, I'd get rid of the McIntosh speakers and just run the La Scala. I'd get rid of the M275 and the extra reels down to only one. Get a nicer rack and hide those wires. I'm also a fan of the Nakamichi 505. I grew up with family owning one of those and was always amazed by it. I'd like to get one some day.
at first i was like why is he driving these with high power solid state? then he says mac 275 and it's like ohhhh ya, la scala and tube amps are a heavenly combo
FM transmission in the UK has been given a last minute pardon on the grounds of common sense. FM is definitively better than it's digital counter part! Dab radio was a difficult sales proposition in the UK. The significantly higher power consumption of Dab radio was a comedy act in a country trying to reduce its carbon footprint, given the number of radios permanently switched on many UK homes. The promise of higher bit rates and the even newer Dab+ codec all failed to deliver the goods. I do own a Dab/Dab+/FM tuner all have good external aerials . Mine remains on BBC radio 3 on FM. Possibly the best produced " MUSICAL "radio station on this fair planet.
