Winter Survival Shelter - Sleeping Outside in -25° Weather

- On this trip I tested my winter camping skills once again. I packed out minimal gear, built a natural shelter, and slept next to a long fire with only a foam sleep pad and one wool blanket.
It was a lot of fun and I had a great time. I stayed plenty warm despite the temperature getting down to -26°C (-15°F). I have figured out a way to make a very effective long fire and I will make a video on this method in the near future.
Cooking in these extreme cold temperatures can be tricky. I try to bring out food that won't freeze which is exactly what I did on this trip. I still had a delicious supper that filled my belly and was simple to make.

Are there wild animals in this area?
Yes. There's a variety of big game (moose, deer, grizzly bears, black bears, cougars, wolves) in this area. They tend to avoid humans for the most part though and don't pose much of a threat. I do carry a form of protection just in case.
What clothes am I wearing?
Upper body: cotton base layer, wool insulating layer, waxed cotton jacket (outer layer).
Lower body: cotton base layer, polyester insulating layer (I would like to have wool pants for insulation, but they are very expensive to buy.. I will likely make my own in the future), waxed cotton pants (outer layer).
How can I sleep in these cold temperatures?
My fire is the reason I stay warm. I build it to put off a lot of heat and I stoke it throughout the night (every 2-3 hours) so that I'm always getting heat. My wool blanket absorbs the heat from the fire and it feels like I'm sleeping under a heated blanket. It is very comfortable to sleep this way, as long as you don't mind waking up every few hours to put wood on the fire.
Gear that I use:
Backpack - Kelty Redwing 44 - It's an ok pack. Comfortable enough to carry but it has a lot of flaws in it's design. I use it because it's all I have. One day I will replace it I'm sure.
Hatchet - This was an $8 antique store find. I put a new handle on it and it has been my go to for a couple years now. No makers mark on it so I'm not sure what brand it is but it holds an edge very well.
Knife - Mora Carbon Steel - Mine has a custom wood handle I put on it. It's a great blade and works excellent for carving/crafting. It's inexpensive and is great quality. One of my best knives.
Saw - Bahco 21" Peg Tooth Blade - The wood frame I made myself. the blade is decent quality. Works quite well.
Boots - Sorel Pac Boots (I think) - I don't know if the specific model I have is still available. But they're Sorel brand. Not the best boots. I have to wear thick wool socks to keep my feet warm and sometimes they still get cold. Once again though they're all I have so it's what I use.
Wool Blanket - Queen size 100% wool blanket - I received it as a gift and I believe it was bought second hand. No label or anything on it.
Sleep Mat - Cheapo foam sleep pad found in any camping store - It's just the typical foam sleep pad that most camping stores carry. Inexpensive but the warmest sleep pad I've used. Bulkier than an inflatable one but a fraction of the cost and warmer.

This video sure brings back memories of my younger days (I'm 72 now). As a Vietnam vet, when anxiety & depression started to get overwhelming, I found that spending a night alone in the woods (especially during winter) was emotionally cathartic. On a side note - your shelter was very similar to the type I would build.

Considering what I have seen & experienced over there (especially as an AeroMed) and the way we were treated upon returning home (I was spat on at Ohare Airport in Chicago) I consider myself one of the lucky ones. Never got into drugs and/or alcohol as an escape. Must have been those nights alone with "Mother Nature".

People i talk to find me strange when i tell them that i am more into, snow, winter and cold instead sun, beach, alcohol and violence.

I live in Western Australia. It's 19 January 2023, 10:32 pm, the temperature is a balmy 24.6°C and I found that I could not stop watching your video - the psychological 'cooling' effect was extraordinary and quite unexpected (I got rid of air con years ago for environmental reasons). Doing something similar in this environment has its own special challenges but your video has encouraged me to go back to 'roughing it' as I used to when I was a teenager (I'm 70 now), spending my weekends in crude beach shelters, cooking ocean caught fish over foraged firewood and falling blissfully asleep to the sound of the surf - happy days. @@beanlegume9965 the 2 things I can think are 1 it uses electricity, 2 it contains refrigerants which are harmful for people, animals, and the air.
We're in Rockingham, temp is around 19 deg. The vid reminds me of camping under personal shelters in Bindoon in the 60s with the CMF in August. Not -23C, but cold enough to recommend an overnight fire like the one shown. One man ration packs made it quite liveable.

A lot of people don't realize that it's safer and more comfortable to camp in the winter than other seasons.
There are no snakes, bears, or annoying insects to deal with during the winter months.
As long as the person camping is protected from hypothermia and frost bite they will enjoy wintertime camping.

I’m sitting here in my centrally heated apartment just having finished a meal and I’m so jealous of this mans self sufficiency and survival ability. I’m too old and have severe cardiac problems so not in a position to change my lifestyle but if I was ever given a second chance at life I’d love to have spent it in the outdoors and preferably in a cold climate

I have pooped in the woods on more than one occasions and it freezes within minutes. Looked nice as i stood it up in the snow.

A good bush survival tip for those cold nights: Take a few pieces of stone (preferably VERY dry stone to avoid popping/exploding - round dry granite-type river stones work the best) and lay them around the fire as you cook. An hour before bed, bury a few of them very shallow UNDER your leg and feet-area in your sleeping shelter. They will warm the ground and radiate heat up through the dirt and your pine bedding. Now I understand the ground was likely frozen where you were but I still would have at least tried to dig a shallow rock pit under my sleep area before constructing the shelter. Yeah, it sucks to collect and re-bury them right before bed, but they will throw heat literally all night and your legs and feet won't be cold.

He did a really good job on his shelter. I had to do this for cold weather survival school in the army while stationed in Alaska. They made us use parachutes and wood to make a small shelter then cover it with snow for insulation. Lastly we lit a candle inside to keep us warm but we couldn’t sleep with it on. I much rather have this type of shelter though. Well done!
I like how he made the shelter small...... a small shelter that is just big enough is the ticket for sure. A larger shelter is harder to heat.... a smaller shelter can actually be kept above freezing fairly easily. Great video.
Spruce is often used as a bed, but I recently heard from a military survivalist that they changed their routines because spruce absorbs moisture, unfortunately I can't remember what they used instead, I think they recommended using dry sticks, for example taking away the green bar from the spruce and only use the soft branch, then collect a lot of it for a bed.

This is the most satisfying thing I’ve seen on the internet. Just a man out in the elements, making shelter, cooking and sleeping all by himself.
I really enjoyed watching this peaceful video that made me think, not annoying fake talk just nature and real life. This guy has shown great survival skills and is well organized. There is surprisingly a lot of work involved in sleeping in the wild for only one night. I can only imagine how tough it was for our ancestors. Today majority of people are not aware of how comfortable life they have. It may be a good move to sleep in a wild from time to time just to be aware of how lucky we are.

so true. i went camping a few days ago for 2 nights, completely unplanned. it was so refreshing to be sat there with just one other person, under the stars, with a fire. at one point he left to go grab some more wood and i was just sat alone in the dark keeping the fire going, listening to the sounds, trying to keep warm and honestly, i wasn’t scared at all. it was just peaceful.

I actually did something just like this when my motorcycle died and left me in a mountain pass near dark. Made shelter just like this, only without an axe I had to use smaller limbs I could break by hand. It didn't get below freezing- but then I had no blanket to pad either! These skills are so essential. Instead of nearly dying of hypothermia I spent a very comfortable night. Thank you Boy Scouts and SAR!

I’ve got a sharp little axe and a chainsaw chain with cords attached (makes for a great portable saw in an emergency) stashed in my car, together with 2 warm blankets, matches, etc. just for that eventuality.

I love camping. I love hiking. I go by myself without anybody but me and my dog. but this is so refreshing to see. We grew up poor my dad lived in west Virginia. We stayed in a teepee for months in the middle of winter and you would sweat at night that fire got so warm. it's funny tho now I think I'm spoiled because I have a sleeping bag and a dog. None the less great video. If I were ever to be stranded I'd hope I'd be buddies with somebody like you.

I think I would cut much more insulation pine fronds and sleep inside them. The open air is deadly. And I would place the log store close by where I sleep ready to top up the fire from my bed.
One crucial detail that was overlooked: Make sure to build a reflector around the fire. This makes the fire more resistant to wind and rain but most crucially directs up to twice as much heat towards you. Ideally use large flat stones, but stacks of smaller stones or, in a pinch, stacks of logs (a bit further from the fire so they don't burn) will also do the trick.
Good tip.
Do more during daylight, make camp early, take empty canteen to fill with snow, you need lots of carbs and water. I like plastic tarp and foam pad for sleeping on snow/wet ground.
I've seen several famous and skilled outdoorsman prove that it doesn't really deflect much heat, but it does shield from wind and can help with rain if you got a small stone covering too. So I still support them but I am skeptical of the heat thing.

I especially love the no bugs part. In the summer the mosquitoes are a menace.

I'm impressed. I work in a freezer 50 hours a week, negative 25, but this is hardcore. Its difficult to feel your fingertips after negative 10. Breathing becomes more after negative 20. Kudos bro

During my military training as an artic ranger I learned that you should use a reflector. Build the campfire in front of a big stone/rock and it will reflect the heat towards you.

It's what we called a bough whiffen back home in NL, Canada, in the 70's. We had a walk of 4 or 5 miles into our old log cabin. So over the years we'd built a few of those when the weather would change on us along the trail. We used them over and over, as needed, until the needles fell off the branches and we'd replace them. We made our bed out of spruce boughs rather than foam, which wasn't as available back then. A good Arctic sleeping bag, good for -40F, made all the difference. Great educational video. I haven't seen something like this in a long time.
I had one of those arctic bags for a trip to Hill End in Australia's east country. It only got down to about - 4 C which meant I was overheating like crazy. They're basically a thermos you can get inside lol

I did a wilderness thing in Utah a couples times and the nostalgia from this is wild. Didn’t get as cold but felt like it and I’ve never been as grateful for a meal after making your own fire or slept as well either from backpacking all day. Good times.

This brings back the memories of camping out, being on the road, really making any place home. It is surprising and satisfying as to what you can do creating small comforts that you really cannot take for granted. They lift the spirits and give you a story to remember for life. This is a video I have returned to a few times. I am looking to learn new skills, and bushcraft is a set I desire. I found this informative, but very relaxing, due to no music and just the sound of nature. I love the channel and it has become a staple of my week now. Sitting down with my little dog in an evening with a cup of coffee and watching your videos has become a comfort.

I remember doing the wilderness survival merit badge for Boy Scouts, I had to built a a shelter like this and sleep in it overnight, when I woke up the next morning I was freezing cold and covered in tons of bug bites!

Yep! I remember I built mine lower to to the ground and got as much insulation as possible. I think at that temperature you have to do the lean to thing with the reflective fire 🔥

Done more than my share of backwoods camping, some in temps down around -20F. This was great to watch; I love those natural ambient sounds!
At 64 with arthritis in my knees and hip, I might lay for a bit in that nice shelter, then sneak over to my Chevy Tahoe parked out of camera range and drive to the nearest motel 75 miles away.

Thank you for building a practical actually useable shelter. I see other channels build crazy things with smokey chimneys that will kill you with smoke inhalation, or floors that will rot, or take WAY too much time to build.
Anyway, it is highly refreshing to see an actually good survival shelter that is quick enough and practical enough to be useful.

@@BobLeton no. Not ignorant at all. This is a practical shelter for IMMEDIATE EMERGENCY USE. While you can definitely build something like what you're talking about, it takes a lot of time and you'd need something like this first. Just so you don't die on the first night.

"It was very soft" - we're talking outdoor soft, not, "sealy queen mattress soft", but after the hours of work setting up the shelter and cutting, I'm sure it felt amazing! Most people, (including myself) have no true appreciation of the fortitude, (mental and physical) it takes to do something like this and make it look so easy. I loved this video, it shows off your skill and guts without all the usual CZcams chatter. I deeply appreciate your skill and talents as a woodsman and filmmaker!

I turned 50 just last September. I was talking to my wife just a couple days ago that I woke up one morning reminiscing how grand the 1980s was when I realized that it wasn't exactly "recent", but it is 3 or 4 decades ago. Then I told my wife that I'm getting old too quickly and didn't want to put off things I will regret not doing while I can.

Reminded me of my time in the Grand Canyon. On about New Year's Eve, 1970 and the first days of 1971 the temperature on the South Rim reached -27 degrees F. (You could look it up). My estimate in the canyon on the Tonto Platform was maybe -20 F. I was hiking alone down the Boucher Trail to the Tonto (about 3000 ft below the rim) and planned to backpack 3-4 days to the Bright Angel Trail and back out. As you might know, people were not allowed to hike alone on the Boucher or the Tonto because basically there is nobody around if you get in trouble, plus route finding is really tough since the unmaintained trails are wiped out in many places by rock slides and there are endless false trails made by the wild burros. How I got permission from a Ranger is another story, but it involved getting from the rim down and up the Kaibab Trail faster than him. The first night I camped on the Tonto and went to sleep and awoke to a gentle snowstorm, a beautiful sight in the canyon. But I quickly noted that the temperature was sinking noticeably with each passing hour (probably about 20 above early on). By early afternoon, I decided I needed to make a plan to survive a really cold night. I did not have the luxury of trees nor equipment like an axe and a saw etc. I had no tent and only a shortie pad. So first part of the plan was to get firewood. Easier said than done in the canyon. My plan, devised on the spot was to look for dry stream beds. In the Spring, there is runoff and broken tree limbs are buried in the dirt and pebbles if you dig. I found a fair amount after a few hours work. Next, I needed a place to camp. Not just anywhere. I found an inward sloping cliff base and built my fire about 6 feet from the rock. That way, my front was warmed directly and my back got heat reflected from the rock. The final bit was to feed the fire slowly, about every two hours so as to not run out of wood but not freeze either. The next morning, I went to get some water from a fast flowing trickle of a stream. I dipped my cup in it, pulled it out and in about 2 seconds flat, there was a loud bang and the cup was filled with a block of ice. The water was way supercooled, so when I stopped its motion, it instantly became solid. To end the story, I decided to backtrack and hike out that day. I have a picture of myself coming up the last few hundred yards with people on the rim staring at me. Why? while they were bundled like snowmen, I was working so hard that I had only a shirt on. No sweater, no jacket, no hat, no gloves, just a red bandana around my head. Good memories, and yes I've had quite a few other adventures in my time as well.

I really want to experience living their atleast once in my life, everything seems to be organized and I love how children are provided with education. I love how to made sure you targeted the clusters instead of finding the best tree possible. When I was in Boy Scouts my troop was very strict about being ethical with wild life and nature, and this was one of the ways we were taught to find wood when we needed larger trunks.

We did a lot bivouac building in similar cold conditions in the Swedish military. Your design is very similar to ours! One thing I'd add though is to "plant" the boughs for the bed into the ground in such a way where they create an arch in parallel with the ground. Since the boughs naturally have a bend in them this isn't too difficult. Start at the inner edge of the intended bed position and overlap the boughs over each other. This will create a springy surface with more distance from the ground which is where most of your body heat will be absorbed from. As others have already pointed out a large stone reflectors dramatically increases the heat from the fire. And if you don't wanna have to stay awake to keep feeding the fire your can make an autofeeding one with a ramp loaded with logs falling into the fire as it burns through the bottom logs of the ramp. This way we could sleep without a sleeping bag (although still very cold), and at least be warm enough to fall asleep. Drinking hot water an is excellent way to heat your body from the inside, unlike insulation which basically only keeps your present body heat from escaping your surroundings but ofc is needed as well. If you wanna be rly hardcore you could also heat stones by the fire and once warm place them under the arch of your bed to work as a radiator. If you've made the arch big enough (like 0.5 meters from the ground up) you won't feel any discomfort sleeping ontop of these rocks like one could imagine. Hope this helps for an even more comfy outdoor winter experience for you :)

This brings back memories from our SERE training 😅 we built something very similar but larger in size so it could fit 5 guys x2 and on the middle we placed our campfire so that it would warm up both of our camps 😁 "great memories"

Just enjoyed watching this video. The pipe was a wonderful touch, I carry a pipe and some tobacco in a vacuum sealed container in my bug out bag and get home bag. It's for no other reason then just comfort. I figured if things got bad, I was in the middle of a bad situation, a pipe always settles my mind a little bit.
