  • Sitting! The average American does it for 10 hours a day. While this position may be so comfortable, it’s completely unnatural for the human body. When you sit down, your arteries, veins, nerves, internal organs, and muscles become compressed, negatively impacting many systems in your body

    And research has shown that sedentary behavior is consistently linked to more than 30 chronic diseases and conditions. Persistently immobile people experience a 100% increased risk of contracting type 2 diabetes and a 147% increased risk of contracting heart disease.
    So, avoid prolonged sitting and stay healthy!

    Most of the things we do today in the modern world are "unnatural" and that's why we have all kinds of sicknesses all related to the modern convenient lifestyle... Anybody smart should get this by now and make changes immediately.

      Digestive problems might be created by disrupted gut microbiome, specially if you took antibiotics. Take a look at another video on our channel, that one is on the gut microbiome. It might help you better understand the situation and give you good pointers

    I work at a computer and learned so much from the video. I know good posture is important, but it clicked for me when you talked about off loading pressure from other areas of the body with good posture. Thanks for taking the time to look out for us folks who sit way too long. Time to move more!

      Chelsea, glad you found this video helpful! Initially, when I delved into this topic, I believed that the main issues with prolonged sitting revolved around muscle problems, specially hip flexor. However, as I delved deeper, I uncovered a myriad of other problems, as outlined in the video, and that's what prompted me to switch to a standing desk right away :)

      Alex, I completely agree with you. There's nothing groundbreaking here! It's all about establishing the right habits and staying committed to them every day.

  • @SevenEllen
    @SevenEllen Před 6 měsíci +2

    I've started what I'm calling the Come Sit (Less) With Me challenge, which is to consciously sit less than four hours a day. i can tell you it's tougher than you think it's going to be but I urge everyone to try it, video themselves doing it to prove it and get all your friends trying it for a month ... and then keep on going because that's the point.
    I used my time by doing house chores, going for long walks, cleaning the car inside and out, running on my treadmill, cooking, and standing at my computer. I wouldn't do this last one for very long because it hurts your feet MORE to stand still rather than move them. I guarantee your feet will ache by the end of day one but something will keep pushing you to complete the challenge. Make sure to still eat great (you will be hungrier) and drink four bottles of water for your joints and energy levels (sounds weird but hydration first thing with/after breakfast in the morning is vital to maintain this thing, trust me).

    You have encouraged me to sit less and less. I prefer to sit in different postures on the floor. I will sit at the table up to one hour as long as it's for a main meal. My body warns me to get up within the hour. The human was not designed to sit for too long at a table.

      Julian, great! If I may, I suggest you add a laying posture to your daily mix (if you have an opportunity). So, you'll continuously mix sitting, standing and laying. We are not designed to sit all day, neither stand nor lay on the couch :)

      Oh, I feel your pain. I pulled my back a couple months ago, and it felt terrible. My suggestions are probably well known to you - 1. to be as active as possible during the day (whatever your body allows you to do), 2. to change positions regularly - sitting, standing (I assume you have a standing desk) and lying in the bed, 3. to use a foam roller on a daily basis, 4. to stretch regularly (ideally in the sauna or steam room) and a healthy lifestyle overall (eat well, have a good night's sleep, minimize stress and so on). I hope it helps!

      @PracticalHealthNow  Před 6 měsíci +1

    • @PracticalHealthNow
      @PracticalHealthNow  Před 10 měsíci +3

      Same for me, Keith! I barely sit these days. An interesting thing I found is that when I got a standing desk, I started moving around more, like walking around the room and so on. When I was sitting all day long, I didn't really want to stand up to walk around. So, it's another benefit of getting a standing desk.

    I agree with all of this, want to add few cents from my side, i think sitting on chair for long is the cause where as sitting long on ground in different seating postures (asanas - sukhasana,vajrasana,etc.) helps make pelivc and lower body muscles strong which was practised traditionally by practitioner or even in day to day life by common man, also they move and do heavy chores which balances everything. one way this cud be achieved i guess is by seating on chair in traditional seating postures (sukhasana etc.) and as you said move/strech every 30-45 min and do gym/sports/exercises + good food & sleep. Although this cant beat the traditional/ancient lifestyle people have but still.

    • @PracticalHealthNow
      @PracticalHealthNow  Před 2 měsíci +3

      Yes, it's slightly better! Though fundamentally, the body is not designed to be in one position for an extended period of time. So, the best thing to do is to continuously switch positions - sitting, standing, lying down, walking around, and so on. I hope it helps!

      Christine, sorry for hearing about your bursitis, I hope it will go away soon. One additional thing to consider (besides minimizing sitting, the increasing time you spend in standing and lying positions) is to think about decreasing inflammation in the body. Bursitis occurs when bursae become inflamed. So, reducing inflammation (no overeating, less sugar, less alcohol, and so on) might help!
