    Never ever had an issue with any oil type air filter in my Saabs, Maptun air filter, K&N, BMC. I do regullarly clean the filters and re-oil them with the correct amount of oil. However I have seen at least twice a maf sensor go bad in paper filters and in oil type air filters. My guess is that it was just the time for the MAF sensor to go bad. It is more prone to fail because your airfilter is very dirty than to fail from oil residue.

    I have used K&N on many vehicles both "OAI" and drop ins and never had any issues or CELs. I find you are right the gains are minimal. Oil based filters I cleaned twice a year. Now I don't bother and just stay with stock (I have a Genesis G80 Sport)

    After reading through the other comments I decided to leave one also. I've been using and maintaining K&N filters on Cars, Trucks & Motorcycles ever since they were offered to the public as they were designed by someone who desert raced and was tires of the sand eating the engines. The filtration was being done with paper & foam filtering and the jagged sand particles would just saw through the paper elements and sandblast the internals of the engine. The best filter ever made was an oil bath and they were a real mess to deal with and most didn't want to do it or pay someone to do it. I had one of these on a 1964 Ford F100 and the carburetor was always clean inside. K&N filters need to be serviced in accordance with the operation environment area they are used in and in a manner as K&N specifies. I hand one in a 1996 Ford F150 for 140,000 miles (sold), Still have one in my 1989 Ford Mustang with ram air, 2010 Porsche Cayman S, 2013 Toyota Tacoma with a cold air package & a RC51 Honda Motorcycle. All of my vehicles are equipped with other performance enhancements also. I've never had a code or drivability problem from 1989 to present day; knock on wood 🤛🪵🪵💯😁.

    Dont oil the filter yourself. Buy brand new. Then buy brand new every two years. No issues on MAF. Problem solved.

    Good! So I'm not the only one who got rid of the K & N air filter on our 2007 93 Aero 2.8L I ended up cleaning the mass air flow sensor and just using high grade normal air filters in the car and no more problems or codes to clear. Saabs are finicky and unlike my my FJ Cruiser, 93s don't really like a lot of "common" over the shelf mods. Thanks for this video!

    The only way I can an air filter will throw a code is if you have too much oil on the filter

  • @svenlindeboom
    @svenlindeboom Před 2 lety +1

    I only apply a small amount of oil to the filter on the side where the air enters and I clean the filter annually with high pressure, but here in the Netherlands we have very little dust in the air. But by sprinkling with salt in the winter, the rust is terrible for old Saabs.

    @aMoldyUsagi Před 2 lety +4

    K&N filters are a scam. The oil fouls MAF sensors, and the higher flow filtration media used just lets shit into your engine to wear it out faster.. An engine is a giant air pump and the air filter is not a meaningful restriction(especially with forced induction) I wish people didn't have to learn this the hard way as you have..
    The stock airbox is good for 350-400hp on these cars, so there's no need to replace it. Don't fall for the K&N filter scam, and don't get the open air "Hot air Intake".. All these do is add induction noise, not power. If you want a little more sound the King Cobra pipe is a cheap and easy upgrade that might actually give you a little better spool on the Turbo, but I wouldn't count on it making a huge difference.

    • @Blue-moon12
      @Blue-moon12 Před 2 lety +1

      I agree with the hot air filter. If it is not boxed off all it does it absorb the hot air and not a true CAI

    • @centralintelligenceagency9003
      @centralintelligenceagency9003 Před 2 lety

      It should be common sense that if the surface area of your filter stays the same, the only way to get less restriction is to sacrifice filtration. If one truly wants intake noise, why not drill a hole in the firewall and route a sound tube behind the dash?

      I bought my Dodge new in 2005. After one year I replaced the cheap OEM filter with the K&N. There was noticeably more power and acceleration.
      Here it is almost 20 years later and 244k miles and I still own this smooth running car with the same K&N filter. I've only replaced the MAP sensor one time.
      I will never go back to using cheap OEM disposable filters ever again.

  • @pjackson65
    @pjackson65 Před 2 lety +1

    I've used K&Ns since the 90s and their biggest benefit is simply the cost savings of not having to replace the paper ones. But they have to be managed. I still use one on my Jeep (no MAF) but on my SAAB I decided to stick with the Mann filters.

    Turbulent air flow around the maf will cause that code too. I run the same k&n filter with no issues. I had issues with the open air intake I made because the pipe diameter changed close to the maf from 3" down to stock plus I had a zip tie on the silicone connector before the maf causing the pipe to compress. It's possible that the blue pipe after your maf is creating occasional turbulance. It looks like its diameter changes. I'd switch that back to the stock pipe and see what happens.

    • @AutoAutopsy
      @AutoAutopsy  Před 2 lety

    • @saabspeed16
      @saabspeed16 Před 2 lety

      Well we all know these cars are picky. Now I made a new intake with a correct diameter pipe. All was fine for a few days then limp mode.... fine for a few days then again limp mode. Now finally got the cel and limp on most drives. I might try a different cone filter because I have a cheap Amazon one on there now. If not it's back to the stock box. This is my 3rd 93 and second 2.0. Never had a problem with intakes i made on the other cars.

  • @powertothesheeple5422
    @powertothesheeple5422 Před 2 lety +1

    It's been said in many forums that the stock SAAB intakes can handle upwards of 400+ HP so there really is no need to upgrade the stock filter. I'd really like to see someone do a comparison with a flow meter to calculate just how much HP they can handle. My experience with K&N filters on SAABs was eating 2 MAF sensors on a 9-5. Hard pass for me.

    The whole "these K n N are used i. Race cars" sales pitch is itself a dead giveaway. Race vehicles are tyibg to get every tenth of a second they can sbd those engines get torn down after wvery race practically. A DD cars the oem set up deliver😢a all the air it beeds needs. Itskes are for looks and whoose sounds
    If you change the maf housing diametera dn get a tune for it, you can amle some extra power..without a tune,nada.

    Have you ever done a segment on the HIRSCH Performance software?
    I had it installed from a SAAB Dealer when i was in Wurzburg, Germany.
    Since then, the USA Guys here in Miami have screwed it up and I can tell the performance is less/original setting.
    240 reduced back to 210 is very noticable.
    Do you know of a garage network that installs and upgrades?

    Hello again,
    Today i was in the highway and the auto pilot disengaged. A bit later I received check engine light and I checked with my ESid and p0101 came on.
    I did a research and the genuine air mass sensor is too expensive. Also, it says «japan» on it. Do you know from which company is the sensor?
    For example the coils are from mitsubishi. The sensor is from Japan, is Hitachi?
