Elden Ring is set in a dark fantasy world called the "Lands Between." The world was created by the Elden Ring, a powerful object that has been shattered, leading to chaos and turmoil. Players assume the role of the "Tarnished," a character who has been exiled and embarks on a quest to restore the Elden Ring and bring order to the world.
The game features a diverse cast of characters, including gods, giants, dragons, and other mysterious beings, each with their own motives and agendas.
Elden Ring is known for its intentionally cryptic and enigmatic storytelling style, where much of the lore is left open to interpretation and speculation. Players need to piece together clues, engage in speculative discussions with the community, and make their own interpretations to fully understand the lore of Elden Ring and its intricacies.
Elden Ring is also an action role-playing game played in a third-person perspective with gameplay focusing on combat and exploration; it features elements similar to those found in other games developed by FromSoftware, such as the Souls series, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki explained that players start with a linear opening but eventually progress to freely explore the Lands Between, including its six main areas, as well as castles, fortresses, and catacombs scattered throughout the open world map. These main areas are interconnected through a central hub that players can access later in the game's progression-similar to Firelink Shrine from Dark Souls-and are explorable using the character's mount as the main mode of transport, although a fast travel system is an available option.

@@theemeraldgecko310I get what you’re saying about Marika, but she was doing for him, in terms of his affliction, what Miquella did for Malenia. Does make me wonder if Malenias eyes were taken by scarlet rot or did Marika and or Miquella try to use their eyes to do for Malenia what Marika did for Mesmer. I also don’t think the genocidal rampage Mesmer was partaking was unreasonable. Marika wanted revenge for her and Messmers people being turned into jar saints.

What I love most about Messmer are the little details we get about him through his followers.
Gaius and Messmer were friends, and both acted as older brothers to the lion (this is radahn, the spell you get from Gaius’s remembrance name drops him) Gaius was an albininuric, an artificial race that was hated in the lands between, but Messmer felt compassion and a kinship towards him instead of hatred, and the two became friends because of this shared cursed birth, so much so that Messmer trusted him to lead his army.
Rellana was carian royalty, second only to her elder sister Renalla, for whatever reason, she decided to give up everything and stand by Messmer, despite knowing that not even the brilliance of the moon would give him the help he needed. She disavowed her own lineage and royal line to become known as the “sword of Messmer”. She would give up everything, willing to be forgotten and abandoned, all so she could chase after him. Even though it isn’t stated directly, I feel like Rellana could have some unreciprocated feelings for Messmer, she chased after him to stand by his side despite knowing she wouldn’t be able to grant him succor, she gave up everything nonetheless for him.
The fire knights, his personal order, are stated to be the only ones who truly knew Messmer, the painful fate that accompanied his cursed form, his flaming serpents. Fire serpent even states that even though Messmers flame would not find purchase within them, they still used fire for the sole fact that it honored their bond, between each other and Messmer most likely. The winged serpent was even the symbol of Messmer’s army, a wise friend who kept the base serpent at bay. Messmer granted them the power of his flame, and even though they couldn’t use it to its fullest, they attempted to in order to honor their bond.
It’s fascinating that the main two characters in this dlc contrast each other so much. Miquella is wildly known, and Messmer is forgotten. miquella is seen as a kind and benevolent being, but uses magic and power to charm others into liking him. Messmer is seen as a tyrant and a monster, but naturally attracts good company that genuinely care for him, enough to give up everything to stand with him. Miquella is perfect and angelic, while Messmer is blasphemous and demonic, yet miquella is much more evil than Messmer when you look into his story. Messmer is by far my favorite fromsoft character, a cursed being who likely deals with self hatred and disgust, is cursed to be eaten from the inside by an abyssal serpent, and is banished to the shadow lands to be a tyrant and a monster, yet finds himself accompanied by loyal knights and friends, the only other character I can think off that has this many references to people adoring him is Radahn and Godwyn, who also naturally attracted people to their sides. He was close with his knights, his friend Gaius, and Rellana gave up everything to stand by him, despite being forced to be a tyrant, Messmer could’ve been one of the greatest and beloved demigods in the land between, if only he wasn’t stuck in such an accursed form.

    • @VictorIV0310
      @VictorIV0310 Před 8 dny

On top of all that, they did all of this knowing they’ll be shunned by society and erased from record with their deeds unsung and forced to wage an unending war without mercy or honor. They also have no real reason to stay in the Land of Shadow anymore. Sure, you can also attribute this to being sealed away with no hope of actually escaping their predicament but by the time we arrive to the Land of Shadow, the Golden Order has collapsed, Queen Marika is imprisoned in the Erdtree and the Lands Between was ravaged in the Shattering, and the Tarnished may have killed any and all remaining demigods left. Messmer and his army could’ve deserted the Golden Order, splinter up and resort to banditry. Yet, even after all this time, Messmer’s army remained at their posts, unaware of the developments in the Lands Between, with little to no hint of any rebellion or mutiny aside from a few black knights such as Andreas and his son, Huw, who rebelled Messmer after discovering his “serpentine nature”. Even after Messmer quashed their rebellion, he gave them an honorable burial and mourned for their loss.
Oddly heartwarming for an army of genocidal fanatics sent to commit a brutal ethnic cleansing with no honor or glory in their name.

Great write up and excellent points. Him and Morgott are such tragic figures. They didn't choose to be born or to be cursed, yet to the very end, they served the Golden Order, long after it had fallen, and without the benefits of mass adoration/fealty. Incredible warriors capable of going toe to toe with the strongest of their siblings. It's actually a mercy that we put them down, allowing them to end their lives with the utmost honor. Neither of them like us, but we respect the hell out of them.

The statue behind Messmer and the "Blessing of Marika" item description makes me think that Marika actually did love him and tried her best to heal him of his affliction multiple times and in multiple ways, but there came a point where she decided that the danger he posed to the Erdtree, though not his fault at all, was too great and she sent him away out of fear
And Morgott and Mogh were likely the same. She couldn't heal them of the Omen curse that reminded her of the very people who took her family away from her the first time but also couldn't bear to see her children be killed for it, so she banished them underground instead. A terrible thing for Marika to do, but knowing her past it is one I can understand to a degree
She wanted to create a world of perfect, eternal order and life, but not even her own children were safe from chaos and the meddling of outer gods. I think she tried to tell herself that how she treated them, as well as her many other sins, would be worth it in the end once she created her perfect world without any more death or war or disorder. And then the golden boy Godwyn actually died, despite everything she sacrificed to make sure that could never happen
And that was the moment she realized her dream was impossible, and all the terrible things she had done to enemies and her own children alike were for nothing. And that guilt and regret is what drove her to shatter the Elden Ring. Too little, too late for poor Messmer though, unfortunately 😢

Something that you really should’ve mentioned: At the bottom of the Shadow Keep is what appears to be a sick bay for the Living Jars. Given what we learn from the DLC about what the Hornsent did to the people of the Shaman Village, it's heavily implied that for all the atrocities Messmer commits in Marika's name, even he cannot stomach what the Hornsent have done and does his best to care for them. It also seems to be another reason that fueled his brutality towards them.

It's crazy the connection he had with the Carians. Rykard clearly took inspiration from his snake curse when everything fell apart, Messmer and Gaius were as older brothers to Radahn, and he impressed Relanna enough that she rejected her royal heritage in favor of fighting by his side. Does anyone else suspect that Messmer might have caused the first burning of the Erdtree? He certainly seemed capable of doning so, especially with his kindling (also explains why his sister Melina is burned and bodyless) and it would explain why Marika was so scared of him. She essentially imprisoned him by veiling these lands in Shadow after his successful crusade against the Hornsent. He even seems the have taken the fall for the whole ordeal, at least at first, asking his loyal soldiers (made up of convicts essentially) to blame only him. Once he realized that it was ruse to isolate him from the Golden Order though, him and his troops cut the heads off damn near every Marika statue. God Marika was such a shitty parent, but at least now we know WHY she was such a maniac. She had some crazy trauma, and responded by inflicting crazier trauma on others, rejecting a pair of own twins for reminding her of the Hornsent.

One thing of note: in Norse mythology there is a "Root Serpent", Nidhogg, who gnaws at the roots of the World Tree along with the souls of the guilty. Kinda like our Base Serpent Messmer, who was set up by Marika to be the villain who would take all the bad reputation for the extermination of the Golden Order's foes. Also I think that the horns of the Omens, the Hornsent and the Wormfaces are meant to be roots. Both snakes and horns are symbols of evil in the Golden Order and they both are aspects of the "base" or "roots" of the Erdtree. Basically, the Golden Order wants you to revere the Erdtree, but it does not want any questions raised on it's origins, so it denounces "horns" and "serpents" as evil.

She grew up watching her friends and family be butchered by the Hornsent. So Marika finally becomes a god, and what does she do? She sends her first born to obliterate the Hornsent, the ones who tormented Marika’s people for all that time. @@theemeraldgecko310 nah man I wouldn’t call it a mistake really, your video was focused on Messmer not Marika. Also, aside from the info gathered from the DLC, I have felt Marika was a victim and puppet of the golden order for the entire time. She cast out Messmer, Morgot, and Mohg because they disrupted the pure image of the Golden Order. But how much of that was her and how much of it was a compulsion forced on her by the Golden Order itself? When Godwyn dies Marika is like, “enough is enough fuck this shit”, and breaks the Elden Ring. If it was solely Godwyns death, yeah I guess I could see it, however it makes more sense if Marika had multiple grievances building up over time that pushes her to the point of being utterly fed up. I think Marika took up the Golden Order’s offer for godhood, thinking she’d be able to avenge her people, and like Miquella, make the world a better place, but the Golden Order was the one truly in control so she really never stood a chance.

In base game, snakes are blasphemous because they wage war on gods. So in Shadow snakes are honored because they worked with Merika to wage war on gods in a crusade.
It kinda fits with other stuff too, omens are these special people are hidden away or hunted, the hornsent are special people who are seen as holy. They also look similar.
Maybe even the pots, it was done to Marika’s people, now she does it to fuel the Erdtree.
Also, Midra was from the shaman village. The implications of that could be really big.

So it's probably more like she followed him because she was infatuated and it wasn't reciprocated, that's the vibes I get from the whole thing.
I believe there's an item description (perhaps the talisman you pick up where the Messmer soldier spirit is, I don't quite remember) that specifically states she followed him because she loved him? I feel like I remember reading a couple of item descriptions that hinted heavily if not outright said that she followed him for love.

Then why did Marika choose Godfrey over Radagon as her consort but then changed her mind? 2. If Messmer is Radagon's son why does he have the red hair since the red hair of Radagon is a curse of the Giants? Didn't the war against the Giants start way after Messmer was born?

To answer the first question, this was something I stupidly forgot to mention, I’m thinking maybe Messmer was a bastard of Marika and Radgaon, this would also explain why not many people know of him, Marika hiding away her dark secret! Maybe radagons curse is from a long time before the war?

Does that mean, there'll be another place called lands of light? Because, the way I see it, take the lands between as mortal world, shadow as underworld, in a way. How you can miss large portions of the story if you simply miss an npc , thereby losing their questline and their part of the tale. It’s a genuine issue, I have answered countless posts online and Reddit about that very thing. Like in the DLC, without finding a missable ladder you can get locked out of a large part of the map and story content. Or by missing npcs you can get locked out of questlines. I enjoy that but there are so many out there who don’t and they are correct in a way. By doing that you’re making your game harder to enjoy for lots of people. Which I don’t think is Miyazaki’s overall plan. I’m sure he would prefer the more people enjoy the game the better, why else make games but for them to be enjoyed? I love the way you have to discover every portion of the map and make sure you don’t miss things but lots of people don’t.

    • @xVERMIN

Miyazaki's storytelling relies heavily on the Completion Principle, which is the human inability to leave a thing unfinished (it's a real psychology thing which is super interesting and so irritating at the same time). It's why the games have drawn such a cult following and why they're so beloved, I think. They exist to keep you guessing and thinking, and never intend on filling all of the gaps. They find a balance between having a massively overblown story that spans hundreds of characters and multiple universes, without compromising on gameplay and bloating the game to make a 50 hour long movie. But I can understand how that kind of storytelling doesn't appeal to everyone. Personally, I don't think I would enjoy the Souls universe games as much if they weren't as complex as they are. But it's all down to personal preference.

And maybe Rykard saw in Messmer a role model (same way Radhan looked after Godfrey), a path to take. Marika might have send him in the "two birds one stone" way but the irony is the Serpent found a way to still remain in the Lands Between, exercing his threat against the Erdtree, via Rykard when Messmer was off limits.

It truly is sad, Marika sacrificed her son Partially for the threat to her order, but it was all for nought. This just gets sadder and sadder

Messmer’s story was all kinds of fucked up he just did his part and was fucked over for it and the level of guilt and emptiness and longing for his mother’s approval is just so heart breaking.
