    The rear air suspension on Town Car self-levels up to 650 pounds in the trunk. Beyond that and it slowly sinks with more weight. And yes, it IS a very reliable system and parts are NOT expensive to replace. A reman compressor is only $145.

    • @tchapman1977
      @tchapman1977 Před 3 lety +9

      Add to that the ability to convert the rear suspension to the conventional shock/strut setup if needs be, too!

    • @canadianmarauder1923
      @canadianmarauder1923 Před 2 lety +7

      Yeah I agree the air suspension is easy to fix. Definitely something I would not delete. I got in a tight spot last year pulling the trans on an 04 marquis. Didn’t have car quite high enough to get trans out so hot wired air system and lifted back end.

      My air bag suspension finally failed (2001 Grand Marquis) and it is as going to cost me $400-$450 more to replace the air bag system than have struts out it. My mechanic is pretty reasonable and trustworthy so I'm betting the cost differential was legit based on his parts costs. I went with the standard ones and regretted it because the ride is not as nice.

  • @rollingtones1
    @rollingtones1 Před 3 lety +49

    The ones to get are 2003 to 2011 due to a redesigned frame and engine cradle, frame donuts, brakes, zero offset wheels, etc. Better ride and more controllable than 2002 and earlier. Also, the 2003-up Town Car has a redesigned trunk and trunklid for more luggage space. And it’s the first year when they brought back the hood ornament. The hood is aluminum on Town Car by the way.

    0:45 No buyer’s guide is complete without discussing the (4) frame lengths (wheelbases). Grand Marquis/Crown Vic = shortest at 114.7” wheelbase. Town Car adds 3 inches. Crown Vic Taxi adds 6 inches and you can tell because the rear doors are noticeably longer (only used in NYC and Chicago). Town Car L adds 9 inches to the 114.7 inch shortest version.

    • @toddsonic
      @toddsonic Před 3 lety +1

      In North America, Panthers that were built for GCC countries were offer both standard and long wheelbase versions of all three cars, they also use the same front seat as the Executive model Town Car (most commonly in cloth) with rear seat vents in the back of the seat (also shared with the long wheelbase NYC taxi cab version).

    You never mentioned the 2003-2005 Grand Marquis LSE. Dual exhaust, rear air suspension from the Town Car, “snowflake” wheels in gold/silver, floor shifter from the Continental, front bucket seats, 4.6 Litre Romeo engine. The only “badging” telling you it was an LSE was the front floor mats. It was a slow seller because most Grand Marquis buyers walked into the showroom needing 6-passenger seating.

    My Panther is a 92 2nd gen Town Car Signature. Paid $800 from an older gentleman, and have invested about 2k in it getting it sorted. That may seem extreme to some folks, but the experience of driving a fresh Town Car of this vintage is like no other. They build nothing like this today. A great reputation for reliability and no car payments is a bonus as well. There is a reason they call these flying couches, you just have to drive one to find out for yourself.

    I personally love my 04 grand marquis, I’d take it over the crown Vic any day of the week. The panther platform is a good reliable car that’s easy to work on, and cheap to fix if you know how to actually work on cars. Mine gets 25mpg on the highway which is really good for a big car with a v8, but it runs good and it’s comfortable as I’ll get out with room for days. My next one will be a Marauder though, I’ve wanted one for a long time just haven’t gotten one yet.

    Today I drive a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis (with only 70k miles, a rare find), base model and it’s one of the best cars I’ve ever owned. Before it I owned a 2007 Crown Vic police interceptor which was also an amazing car.... the only difference was, well, the Vic was built to be a police vehicle. Sturdier & more powerful but less comfortable seats, more wear and tear, more expensive suspension to repair. The Mercury is a reliable couch on wheels. Other than that, I definitely recommend this platform. They may be gas hogs but they are well performing, reliable vehicles that will last you many more miles than any newer cars built today.

The Town Car is the best, heated seats, all the comforts, my '02 is a gem, no rack/pinion steering, uses no oil, 180K, runs like new, tranny can be replaced in any garage, dual exhaust, smooth, quiet, best of radio, 24 on the highway, I just put in all new headlamp assemblies, Lincoln made this so easy to do, cost me $225 total. Nine months ago, I bought my first Panther - an ‘07 CVLX, with 150,000KM on the odometer. I’ve since gotten better brakes, cleaner wheels (Town Car rims fit like a glove and look FAR superior to the wheels the car came with!) and an Interceptor grille as well, all while putting another 20,000KM on the car; trying my damnedest to find CVPI rims (might need to get a Vic parts car for that one), and working on finding a place to get the front suspension overhauled as well as some of the fluid changes done.
    Inevitably, a paint job will follow... between Peelformance White and the recent hailstorms in these parts, it’s a matter of when, not if.

      1) I already knew how to read that one!
      2) From Wikipedia: The Ford Crown Victoria is the only Panther vehicle that was produced for the 2012 model year, as the Mercury Grand Marquis, Lincoln Town Car, and Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor were discontinued during the 2011 model year. As 2012 production was illegal for sale in the United States (due to lack of stability control), the entire 2012 production was exported to the Middle East.
      3) Haha I made sure to put the miles in the corner in little white text!
      4) I have seen the odd one of those in the classified, my best is about 25 on the highway but then again I do find as soon as I get on a nice wide open stretch of road I find my foot somehow gravitates closer to the floor, maybe theres a big rock in my shoe!

      6) AH! I totally should have hahaha!

      8) Hahaha
      9) The one thing I like more about it is the centre console, I would love to have one like in the Town Car where its both a console and a seat.... dont know why they didnt do that.
      10) I never notice, that neat!
      11) Ahaha! Thats a good one! I added it to my playlist lol
      12) That as well!
      13) Yeah, I feel like with just a bit more TLC those things could go like snot!

    i just bought a mercury grand marquis! I'm stoked on it, however before i can drive it i have to replace the intake manifold as it has a huge hole where the thermostat housing meats the mani. I stoked on it though. i know they are "grandpa cars", but i think the grand marquis are super bad ass, and i could always slap a marauder bumper and some headlights. also they still have a v8, that you can tune to an extent, are superrrrrrr comfy and feel like a truck

    I recently inherited my grandmas 2001 grand Marquis gs, plush seats, factory dual exhaust and 16 inch spoke wheels what they call the hpp package, it’s a Canada plant build so it’s the Romeo engine from what I’ve read. It’s got pi engine, 3.27 gears, 4r70w trans, from what I have read it seems to be a pretty good car. It runs and drives perfectly and has 121k miles. My gma drove it over 20 plus years all granny miles. I can’t wait to start modifying it.

    Gas is not even that big of an issue, considering that they’re 4.6 V8, on the street they can give you a good 16 mpg and in the road about 25. These cars can really last forever and they almost don’t require a lot of maintenance. I drive an 06 town car, I’ve had it for 10 years and absolutely NO problems whatsoever.

    I'm running a 98 crown vic interceptor that I just bought 2 weeks ago with 242200 on the odometer. Only things I've done are coil packs and spark plugs had a bad misfire so did all 8v at the same time so it was done and over with. Need to get a oil change and new fuel filter, air filter and wiper blades.
    The car runs great even for it's age and millage. $800 for a car this reliable that fits me at 6ft3 and my wife and kids is almost impossible to beat. Then add the performance to it. This is slow off the line but just beat my cousins 2017 mustang with room to spare. And the 140 mph speedometer isn't a joke I've hit 130 and still wasn't done

    The 02 and older are the real old school. Recirculating ball steering old style frame, more wallowy no rpm, tire pressure guage classic ruby red reflector glass on the trunk. Insted of that faded red and later that hideous gray. More chrome, the gear shifter was all metal i don't know why they added that stupid pouch thing at the bottom. No fog lights. Minus the air bags and computers a 99 or 2000 is basically like a 1979 or 80.

    Worked at a Lincoln Mercury dealership for a while, always liked the Grand Marquis. Bought a 99 and it had all the rattles and squeaks you could imagine. But runs great 128K. Bought another 02 with 17K miles, it had sat up for years and on startup a few valves stuck and one was bent so heads were done (12 valve sleeves replaced) and I am almost ready to button her up.

    I've owned a 98 Vic, an 02 Marquis, and an 07 Marquis. Idk. I feel like the 02 was the better car, but the 98 was my first car and I had for so long. The 98 went on for 6 years with almost no issues where as the 02 Marquis was more luxurious but died to rust within a few years. I don't want to talk about the 07. It's still a Panther, but I don't like it as much as my last two cats. No sir. Feels cheap and idk, phoned in in some ways. Ok, I have MERCURY rn an 07, but the FORD Vic from 10 years prior was classier and felt more well built on the interior.

      Yes, my Grand Marquis LS had and I do mean had rear air suspension on it. When the left bag started to leak air forcing the compressor to work almost constantly, I ordered a more reliable conventional regular springs and shocks and never looked back. Not a fan air suspension.
