Hi, I´m the R&D process engineer who made the front end of the panther platform happening.
I´ve spend 2 years of my life developing the hydroforming process for the front rails, which are mostly responsible for the overall rigidity of the platform.
The commissioning of the production line in Dearborn/Detroit at the Ford Rouge River Frame Stamping Plant at the Miller Road ,
took me almost a year and the certification process was a real effort from Ford.
They even had a bunch of retired engineers called back , to enhance the overall quality.
Those front end rails have a wall thickness of 3,5mm and we hydroformed them with 1700bar of water pressure .
    Those were good times:)

    • @PanzerPlatform
      @PanzerPlatform  Před 3 lety +4

      Right on Steve,
So then why do all the front end bushings, and upper / lower ball joints wear out prematurely?
      Ahhhh, I'm just kidding. lol
      Thank you for your service.

Oh c'mon don't get all bent out of shape on me. I was just funnin' with ya.
My 2004 Crown Vic civilian base model (161,000 Miles) is still on all the original front & rear suspension parts.
I may have some cracked rubber bushings here, and there but there is no looseness or endplay of any kind. I had an alignment check last year and everything is still in spec after the first alignment back in 2012.
I couldn't be happier with how the car has treated me.

@@PanzerPlatform @Panzer Platform It´s all good , I know you were just joking.
One thing I may mention, because there was a huge difference how GM and Ford attacked this project in general.
As you know, the traditional way of making a frame, is by welding together two deep drawn shells of stamped sheet metal.
By welding those parts together you´re weakening the material and because the coldforming is putting enormous tensions into the parts,
it´s hard to get a straight frame at the end.
The hydroforming process allowed to increase the quality into an unknown high level of repeatability.
Because all tensions are gone after blowing it up and the tool is like a baking form , you´ll get the same part over and over again.
We also punched reference holes into the frame against the highest water pressure and made the stamp in a way so that the chip stuck to the frame.
Otherwise it would´ve landed in the contour of the die and would leave a mark.
The hydroformed part was the reference part at the end for all other parts, because it was so reliably equal all the time.
Btw: The first design of the tools for the front end was an utter failure. Keep in mind that a tool for the production line, was about 1.5 million US-dollar each-we had 2: LH & RH.
It was a very complex assembly from multiple blocks of hardened steel 66HRC hard) and all contour areas were hand polished.Lots of sensors and hydraulic cylinders etc.
The positioning of the contour was totally wrong and led to a bending of the hardened blocks under pressure.
They cracked and the part itself was bigger than the 3D-drawing of it, in every direction. We scrapped the tools after a month:) 3 million down the drain...
Now the difference between Ford and GM.
Ford investigated this effect with laser measurements very precisely and made a recommendation based on their experience.
Friendly but with a clear message: You either fix this, or we do it ourselves...and you pay for it one way or the other, ...but we are willing to learn together.
With GM-which was a 120 million dollar investment for them for 2 complete production lines, robots and everything- we had a whole range of problems,
due to the lack of experience with the nature of hydroforming in general. Remember we did that GMT360-frame before the Panther platform.
The technology was so new and was never applied to parts that big in diameter and length. An Industries first. Ford profited indirectly from this.
They/GM totally left us (R&D Company Schuler Hydroforming) alone with these issues and were willing to postpone the time schedule to a certain point, but not more.
They bled us dry on money and looked for alternatives in things of process and sub-suppliers instead.
They were not loyal to us and the dedication to this major project, but only to their end of the contract.
So, very different attitudes to handle projects on both sides.
I liked the Ford way better and they were more successful at the end,
because the Company Budd/Thyssen Krupp in Kitchener/Ontario that employed >1500 people by producing the GMT360 is no longer there, but the Rouge River is still flourishing:)

The only repair by previous owner was 1 ball joint and lots of regular maintenance, I changed the intake manifold on day 2 after it cracked testing the acceleration lol. Hello Chuck, well done, good summary. I'm glad you mentioned me. Taxes and insurance are really cheap for you. I pay about $ 900 a year (about 800 euros) for the vic, which is also the reason why I only equip the car with a license plate in summer. Then I save about half.
You see, Germany is not a paradise for engines with large cubic capacity, since insurance and taxes are calculated afterwards. Added to this is the age of the driver, since the insurance companies see a higher risk for young drivers here. As a young driver or novice driver, the cars are often insured through the parents, otherwise you can quickly expect to pay around $ 1,500 a year (for a single car !!!!).
    Regards. Frank

I'm loving this... wish I had given more thought to your question. Seeing the responses above I would have commented that I agree with all the uncontested pros *except* the insurance - I pay way too much in insurance for the Crown Vic compared to other vehicles I have. The cons I agree with all except I haven't noticed the front suspension wearing out. For the others I'd con them all except body on frame, interior styling, RWD, and crash worthiness I think those are pro.

Only one person mentioned the Peelformance White Paint, and it wasn’t you. Lol
Also, I can’t believe you omitted “Towing Capability”.
I was flabbergasted that I got all this data with one single question from only 24 people. I had fun putting this together.
Yeah my ‘04 Vic with 161,000 miles is on all original front & rear suspension parts. I had the alignment checked 10 months ago at my Ford dealer, and it was “in the green”. I have a feeling the front suspension bushings, and ball joints, and what not wearing out prematurely have a lot to do with the roads the vehicle is being driven on.

  • @B3burner

Your whole discussion about young vs. old perspective got me to thinking. My paradigm on age spectrum has definitely shifted over the years.
    I will admit that I am 53.
In my mind I still think of myself as 32... the age I was when I bought my first classic. I’ve grown older but my overall view of the world around me hasn’t changed that drastically since then.
So this leads to a humorous paradox- what is young? And what is old?
    So to me:
    52 & under = toddler to 20 something
    53 = early 30’s
    54 & up = 60’s to 90’s.
Amazing just how narrow and egocentric my sense of time is, where it benefits me!! 🤣🤣🤣
I guess age really is a relative thing.

However - Install a Kenwood with NAV/SAT/AM-FM/CD/CAM/USB/Phone and your suddenly up to 2015 standards. I agree with most of your P&C. Some are subjective and user pref. It's an old persons car but us old people love them for the nice ride. Young people all want to do 0-60 in 3.2 seconds even if the speed limit is only 25. This car was not made for that so it's why 99 out of 100 of them get destroyed to rear end hits. Young people all do 30 mph curves at 70mph. This car also won't do that thus more rear end hits. Young people love a go cart ride and feel every pebble in the road. Us old people would rather have the air ride and not feel Baltimore size potholes.

Hey Chuck, I had a few things I wanted to comment on here.
For the suspension, most of the people complaining about suspension wearing out prematurely are referring to the pre 03 version of the front suspension. Those eat ball joints constantly. The 03+ suspension is generally considered to be far more reliable.
Also, for the weight of your Vic, I'm not sure who is right, the door sticker, or google, but according to the internet, your Vic has a curb weight of 3,942 pounds. As far as I know no panther platform vehicle ever exceeded about 4500 pounds in weight. And the heaviest being the latest model Lincoln Town Car LWB cars. Funny enough, the earlier cars actually weigh less for some reason, your 2010 Merc weighs about 4,118 pounds curb weight, with a 1992 Grand Marquis weighing a mere 3,769 pounds.

my 2011 P7B has an open differential , how annoying.. I think the P7 models should have came with the tracloc rear ends. Also agreed with the stock engine performance. It is a little weak but at the same time if they had tuned it for more power it would be breaking more stuff more often. Also agreed , everybody thinks that I am a wanabe cop impersonator.. and it's like no , I just like the car. I'd be a bit interested to see how a body on full frame design is a con , but I haven't yet heard the explanation .. I LOVE driving my vic in the snow. I've literally never had it stuck. It can be a bit tough to get going sometimes but that is directly relevant to the open differential , if it had a tracloc rear it would be great.

From what I've seen Town Cars are the most likely to leak water onto the front passenger floor area from the HVAC air intake.

I'm chiming in with a few cons. I am pretty busy, but I'll just start with a couple things with which I have personally been frustrated. Later, I would also like to list some pros and also do so in comparing the CVPI to the civilian model.
Anyway, the one really unreliable and under-designed aspect of any given 1998-2011 Crown Vic has to be the plastic intake manifold that fails at around 100k-150k miles. This repair is $500+. The steering shafts are also under-designed and wear out pretty quickly, and the lower shaft rusts and binds within states whose roads are salted. These shafts are not only weak, they are exposed to the elements-they have no boot around them. I might also add that the power steering pumps are whiny, and the rack and pinion steering has-as far as I know-a not-so-stellar reliability record.
I will add more later; for now, these are a couple cons that I especially loathe.

@@PanzerPlatform No problem! I do have one other thing I wanted to mention. Actually, it's something I just heard, and I'm wondering about it now. If it's true, it's definitely-in my opinion-a con: apparently, 2008+ Crown Vics had revised steering pumps that made for a tighter, heavier steering feel (for the sake of more road feel). If that's true, that may be why my 2010 P7B steers in no way like the 2005 I drove. If that's the case, and there really isn't anything wrong with my P7B, that's very disappointing to me. Road feel is fine at high speeds, but I'm finding I'm missing at low speeds the effortless steering feel that was provided to me by that 2005. Can anyone confirm this?

    • @PanzerPlatform
      @PanzerPlatform  Před 4 lety

You know, that brings up a very good point.
My 2004 Vic steers different than my 2010 MGM.
It feels like my Vic is easier to steer, and my Merc takes more effort at the steering wheel.
I was just talking about this to Patrick “Random Guy #2” channel.
Last year I flushed the power steering fluid in both my Panthers.
The fluid in the ‘04 Vic was the original fluid at 15 years old, and 160,000 miles.
It was dark, had only slight amounts of “glitter” (fine metal particles) from the steering rack, and most importantly did not smell burned, or overheated in any way.
The ‘10 Merc at 9 years old and 70,000 miles was a totally different story. It was black, full of “glitter” (fine metal particles) from the rack, and had a god awful burned smell. It took 3 flushes about a week apart to get the fluid clear cherry red again.
Now a year later the fluid in the Vic is still clear cherry red, just as the day I flushed it a year ago.
The Merc fluid is much darker, and is full of “glitter” again. I should probably flush it again. Fortunately the entire power steering fluid capacity is only 1.5 quarts.

@@PanzerPlatform Interesting to note! This makes me wonder whether you're also experiencing power steering / rack and pinion issues, or that's just the behavior of pumps in '08+ Crown Vics. How tight is the steering in the MGM? Would you say you would prefer using both hands when navigating out of a parking spot? In the 2005 I drove, I could steer with the palm of my hand-even one finger, if I wanted to. In my 2010, it's a different story-it feels like Honda power steering.
I think I should make a video and share it with you. Perhaps this would also be a good video idea for your channel: a comparison between the two cars' steering inputs.

    • @PanzerPlatform
      @PanzerPlatform  Před 4 lety

My 2010 takes more steering wheel effort than my 2004.
However, I can still perform parking lot maneuvers with one finger like you said.
I think maybe you have something bound up, or lacking lubrication.
      Just a thought.
I would like to see a video showing your issue.

So this is just my 2 cents on why I love/ hate the vic .
I have a 2011 P7B 101 ilde hours stupid low miles no rust. I turned it into a fun daily built it up with some simple mods and good dyno tune on 93oct and an sct tuner with the shift pressure at 25% and more the vic is quickkkkkkk im making 320hp and 340 tourque that is more than enough for just daily fun . And to go on drives in the summer. Basically a more reliable murader. In my opinion. I yet to have any issues with the vic and mainly bc I baby it . So I don't have really any cons yet but with what I've done to it I definitely got a bang for my buck being 22 years old with a legendary rwd body on frame monster of an American muscle sedan I couldn't ask for more honestly 😇 the only con I can think of that actually affect me is winter driving .
And that people threaten you bc of fhe "cop car " aspect but there just mad bc they payed 50 k for a vehicle only to get blown away by a kid in a built up cop car 🤣😂😂
My INSTAGRAM is at @ big_nastymf if you guys have any questions about how I got my vic to have almsot mach 1 power and at the same time not sacrifice reliability 😃

@@PanzerPlatform i was debating on starting a channel or releasing some videos but I just didn't know if anyone would really care or watch tbh 🙃 im still trying to get my vic painted and finish things up with it for summer im going to try to make an crown vic SVT concept.
Your the first person I've told my set up to beside my tuner and my uncle who helped me build it we've kept it a secret since im Basically almsot making mach 1 mustang power. And more than murader
      My numbers (320hp -340 tourqe)
I can send you vids via email or whatever works best for you? Or idk if you have Instagram? But I will tell you it is insane I didnt change the gearing and I have stock lim slip dif bc my uncle who's a navy mechanic said stock 3.27s is perfect for rn . But the vic pulls its very hard suprisly without burning rubber everywhere lol tame but powerful its hard to describe the feeling of it without actually driving it. But the way I have it set up is 1st and 2nd gear is bascially endless tourqe and I dont even have to mash the pedal I just give it a love push and im at 110 🤣 my 0-60 is definitely under 6 low 5s but mainly cruise and take it on drives more than race I RARELY ever mash the pedal at lights or even at speed and I never to donuts or burnouts I love the car to much. It is very quick its not like throw your neck back but it is definitely fast enough to make me at 22 drive like a grandma 😂 and its a very simple set up and simple tune to maximise reliability without overkilling the 4.6 with power and not build up the engine yet I am debating on supercharging it but at the same time I love the power rn and dailying it I would hate to have it only as a Sunday car
      Mysetup is
      1) bbk 75mm throttle body
      2)spacer (helix TB spacer)
(Also if you don't have a tune after these 2 mods your panther will run like 💩 thsts where most panther guys mess up)
      3) 80mm MAF
4)areo motive 340l stealth fuel pump (on 93 oct)
      5) bosch double iridium plugs (gapped at 32)
      6) msd plug wires
      7) DG508 high preform ignition coils
      8) k&n preformance fuel/oil filter
      9) preformance oil catchcan
And that's pretty much it excepts its straight piped with factory headers cats and h pipe and exits (for now) and its on some mustang wheels for rn until I get my gt500 wheels 😀
And I have a good dyno tune from my trusted shop and my sct tuner witch has a bunch of custom stuff to make it shift faster and all that. Basically my tuner said it was a "J MOD " hack without paying 2k for the actually j mod and there's less chances of messing up . Its a good setup powerful enough to be humble ppl whern they see a cop car shoot off like a rocket and tame enough to not have to upgrade the whole entire engine yet with any issues.
