- Even though we see them quite often, most Catholics know very little about cardinals. After all, they are not a big topic in catechism classes. What we do know comes mostly from the media, where cardinals are often depicted as remote and formidable figures in their scarlet robes who help lead the Church and gather together in the Sistine Chapel to elect a new pope.
In truth, cardinals are indispensable officials who began their long careers as humble young priests and who, by earning the confidence of the pope, are entrusted with the very future of the Catholic Church through their right to vote in papal elections.

I would like to add that the 'choir dress' is the most formal for cardinals but that it is only worn when attending specific church functions.
The most formal dress for a cardinal when attending a secular event, such as a state dinner where 'black tie' would be required would be the black house cassock with scarlet red trim and buttons, scarlet red silk fascia, zucchetto, watered silk scarlet red ferraiolo and the Cappello Romano, which, in the case of a cardinal, would have a gold and red cord around it. This, of course, would be removed whilst indoors.

One correction for this channel: the College of Cardinals is not restricted to choosing a pope only from its own members (although that has been the practice for many centuries). In reality, by Canon Law they may select ANY male baptized Catholic as pope, who -- upon his acceptance of election -- is immediately consecrated a bishop (if he is not already one). (As an example, read the novel "The Vicar of Christ" where the conclave selects a monk as pope.)

The name of the church for 2000 years is "The Catholic Church". The faith we practice is "Christianity". Until the protestant revolt, no Christian referred to themselves as "Catholic", only "Christian". It was anglican protestants who invented the term "Roman Catholic" to differentiate themselves from the one true church, because they still wanted to be identified as "Catholic". Please stop referring to the church or the faith as "Roman Catholic" or "Roman Catholicism", we are "Christian" or "Catholic".
Actually, the word 'catholic' means 'universal.' So the Catholic Church is the original one truth Christian Church started by Jesus Christ Himself. Therefore, it is the 'universal' Church for all Christians. That was, as you pointed out, until the protestant reformation.
As far as using the word 'Roman' Catholic, there are actually something like 33 different branches of Catholicism, the Roman one being the largest. So using 'Roman Catholic' differentiates it from the other branches of Catholicism.

Actually, there are 24 "rites" of the Catholic church. What you are failing in your attempt to identify is the Latin rite. The 24 rites of the Catholic church are not branches. These rites have, generally, slight differences in the liturgy due to traditional regional practices, but all liturgies have a requirement for certain elements to be present, in order to be valid liturgies. I can attend mass (or "divine liturgy" in some cases) at any of these parishes because it's the same church!
There is no such thing as a "Roman Catholic church". The Catholic church IS the universal church and has been so since Jesus Christ established it.

All cardinals are bishops. The bishop is the shepherd of the flock in his diocese. The 'stick' which is actually called a 'crozier' symbolizes a shepherds staff. If a bishop is withing his own diocese, the crozier points forward. If he is a guest in another diocese, it points backwards.

The "Fairness Doctrine" which required broadcast media to present both sides equally in their news, commentary and ads for decades (1950s -- 1980s) was abolished DECADES ago -- by Republicans. Doing so paved the way for the Fox "news" channel and other far right-wing radio and cable channels. It was a BAD mistake, but hey, Republicans knew that by doing so, BILLIONS of dollars in profit could be made by the uneducated minions who watch those channels and listen to right-wing radio idiots -- oops, I mean pundits.
