- Peroneal Tendinopathy (Pain on the outside of the ankle)
Peroneal tendinopathy is an injury to one or both of the Peroneal tendons that run along the outside of the ankle. These tendons subsequently degenerate and become inflammed. Often this injury develops after a simple ankle sprain.
Risk Factors:
Peroneal Tendinopathy is very common in individuals who participate in multi-directional sports eg tennis, football. But is also very common in:
- Individuals with a supinated foot type/high arch foot type
- Inversion injury of the ankle eg lateral ankle sprain
- Overuse of the foot and ankle
- Trauma
- Hypermobile ankles and feet
- Persistent Lateral ankle sprains
- Chronic ankle instability
- Weak ankles
- Excessive jumping activities
- Increasing training intensity, distance, speed too quickly
Symptoms
- Pain and inflammation along the outside of ankle just under the ankle bone. The pain may course around the outside of the ankle bone either below or above
- There may be obvious inflammation
- Weakness and instability of the ankle and giving way
- Clicking and popping noises around the outside portion of the ankle (snapping of the tendons may also occur where they pop out of the normal location)
Peroneal Tendinopathy is easily diagnosed with palpation methods along the course of the tendons and with stress testing of the tendons. Ultrasound scans can easily pick up degeneration of the tendons and they can often pick up tears as well. Sometimes an MRI is required to assess for split tears and more serious injuries.
Treatment
- The initial aim of the treatment protocol should be to reduce stress in the tendons and splint the tendons.
o This should include compression of the injured area
o Strapping techniques to reduce motion, movement and stress on the tendons
o If there are tears in the tendon a walker boot or ankle brace will be required
o Footwear
o Orthotic therapy
- Reducing pain with topical anti-inflammatory medication, contrast therapy, heat
- Reduce tension in the peroneal muscles with soft tissue and trigger pointing techniques
- Improving ankle range of motion with mobility exercises for the calf complex and ankle joint
- Activity modification and complete rest is often needed

Thank you for this! I ran 6 miles today with no pain. Finally, a taping that actually works to relieve pain!
Thank you! I have been suffering with swelling outer ankle for a LONG time. Now that I have taken action to investigate how to support it, I found this PERFECT tutorial to address exactly the issue. 👍
This is about the 5th video I've watched on taping the ankle for peroneal tendonitis. It has been recommended from 0% stretch on the tape to 50% stretch and this video tp 100% stretch.
Thanks for the video! I especially love that you are demonstrating putting it on yourself. Lots of videos have someone applying it to someone else, which hides the awkward and hand changes needed to do it yourself. Nice to see this. I have a history of widespread tendinosis and my peroneal decided to join the party. Dance is keeping me sane during the continued pandemic, and it's good to have the reminder not to load too soon (and how to know if I'm doing so).
The absolute best instructions I’ve seen so far of the many many videos
Wow, I've been trying a number of different taping methods and braces over the past 3 weeks and this is the first technique that has made it possible for me to walk without pain. Thank you!
Thank you for showing self tapping methods! It's so helpful to see how to self apply the tape for those of us who don't have a live-in physical therapist always on call 😂
Ok m
thx, the way you show how to measure the length of tape is very helpful.
Super erklärt. Der Schmerz beim Laufen war sofort weg.
I have a high arch foot and I'm suffering from pain on the outside of my ankle for a year. you are the first that I see that can explain my pain correctly. I will try to use your taping method. Thank you.
Same here, does it help you ?
I just followed and did this, after badly rolling my ankle the other day and was getting pain in those tendons. The strapping really helped with the pain and hopefully has given it the support it needs
Nice detailed video, can you please do one for collapsed arches?
Very well explained and demonstrated. Thanks for this. Wonder if there's a waterproof version of this tape?
Absolutely love this. How soon after injury would it be advisable to apply this? 2 days?
I had precut tape so hopefully it's all the same results. Looks almost the same length as you cut. My last piece went all the way around my leg. Lol. Locked down for sure. Should the 1st 3 pieces pull or feel taught? I wanna make sure I stretched it enough before patting it down
Wow. My podiatrist didn’t suggest this at all. Nor did she suggest any exercises or stretches. I was running with absolutely know pain before or after but only when I purposely extended and inverted my foot did I felt a sharp pain with tenderness to touch on the top of the foot in the same area. She said no running and pretty much only upper body exercises for at least 2 weeks, including , no elliptical/bike/or even swimming. I’ve done my elliptical with no issues since the appointment. Feeling a little confused. Advice?
HI. Is this bandage good for running? Do all tapes have to be 100% tight? Is this bandage also suitable for pronation or is there a specific one? Thank you
How would you tape for Retrocalcaneal Heel BURSITIS?
Can this cause tingling and a bit of weakness?
Will taping the ankle like this stop the peroneal tendon from slipping over the outer bone, which is what is happening with me?
The tape doesn’t irritate the skin?
Is this good for plantar fasciitis?
Can you do hip flexor taping
I have noticed the first strip went over the Ankle. Not around the ankle (like you mentioned). So that is confusing. Why not just buy other KT Tape, with round edges. Instead of cutting tape?! Why does the edges have to be cut? What is the difference?
rounded edges help it not to pull up, probably cheaper than the rounded stuff
