Recently I did a video on The 5 Best experimental airplanes in the market today. I chose the Vans RV-10 as the best kit airplane. The link to that video here • Top 5 Best Kit Airplan...
Having already shared a bit on the RV-10 it was only fitting that a review one in detail. So in this video we have a 2014 Vans RV-10, owned by Bill. The aircraft is fully homebuilt and IFR certified.
In my opinion, Vans RV-10 is the best performing 4 seater aircraft that you can own on a budget. Why? well this airplane can go head to head with a Cirrus SR22 in comfort, build, speed and range. Even one that is fully loaded. Yet the RV-10 will only cost you a third of what you will pay for a brand new Cirrus SR22. This is both in purchase price and maintenance. The only features you may not get in the RV-10 is may be a standard AC unit or a parachute system. But who are we kidding? this is an experimental airplane, therefore you can add as many features as you want.
Performance wise, the RV-10 fitted with a Lycoming IO-540 260 horse power engine will cruise at 200 miles per hour and climb at an outstanding 1,950 feet per minute. Stall speed is merely 57 miles per hour. For those in aviation, thats roughly 50 knots. That’s an impressive achievement for this airplane. Comparing to a Diamond DA40 I trained in, that airplane is at least 40 knots slower and still stalls at roughly the same speed. The RV-10 will also fly non-stop 825 miles. All stats that will leave a grin on a pilots face.
Now let’s talk cost. To purchase a ready build RV-10 will cost you anywhere from $150,000 to $300,000 depending on build and finishes. If you opt to build one your own RV-10 aircraft like most owners do, you’re looking at a little over $100,000 for the entire kit, engine and avionics. All of these are still peanuts compared to other aircrafts in the same class, namely the Lancair 4, Cessna TTX or a Cirrus SR22.
This is the perfect airplane for a family guy or someone who flies on long trips with friends and baggage. For Bill the owner of the airplane showcased here, he absolutely loves his plane and he flies a few hundred hours per year. He tells me that he usually cruises at 168 knots, running lean of peak and burning only 10 gallons of fuel per hour. Amazing!

@Mike,
I’ve watched your videos for the last couple of years, and it’s great to see how your knowledge and passion for aviation, as well as your interviewing skills, have grown during that time. You’re a great example of somebody who follows his/her interests instead of just sitting on the couch and dreaming about doing it one day.
Don’t sweat the haters, and keep the airplane videos coming!
I've been considering building an RV. Even though I don't need 4 seats, the RV-10 makes a lot of economic sense. For example, I could build an IFR 9a for just under 100 grand, or an IFR 10 for about $140-160k (probably closer to $160 because quick build would be necessary to complete in reasonable time). When I look at resale, I would be lucky to resell the 9a for 150k, but IFR 10's sell for at least 250k and often 300k or more. There are a TON of people with money looking for a 4-place 200mph airplane! Therefore, the total cost of building, and eventually selling an RV-10 should be considerably less than any 2-seat RV.
I appreciate your attention to features that make an aircraft appealing to passengers as well as the pilot.
Thanks 🙏🏼 Mojo Mike. Nice 👍 interview and beautiful RV-10. I thoroughly enjoy your Videos.
Hey Mike, thanks for sharing these videos. Wish you all the best!
Thanks Mojo, I do enjoy your vids!
Very well done, enjoyable and informative. You could tell the owner was proud, which he should be. Having a hangar (at Gwinnett/Briscoe or any other metro Atlanta airport, not easy) is a must for a build project, also to protect such expensive avionics properly from the elements. That's always a factor to consider in purchasing a plane. BTW, there are some very interesting "man cave" type hangars that make hangar time enjoyable.
Great reviews, keep up the good work!
TY for the RV 10 coverage. Subscribed.
nice paint, nice avionics, nice plane. ill have to start thinking about getting one!
You really make good videos! They're to the point, answering my questions, with the right amount of talk and video.
Thanks a lot! Awesome content!
Great video mike
Good recording levels, music not a problem, highly informative and Mojo doesn't mumble like so many others. Still, you just don't get numbers anymore, do you.
Nice vid keep up :D
Awesome video
I Love all the Planes !
Congrats Bill! Keep dreaming, keep flying.
Great video....I’m currently building an RV10 and like the motivational boost I get from seeing flying 10s!
Mike Sherman we care
Hey Mike, are you an engineer or equally experienced/skilled guy or are you doing more learning as you go? What "supervision" is required during the process? Thanks for any insight!
Not an engineer, but have always been interested in building, mostly wood furniture etc. Learned how to work with aluminum while building the airplane. Instructions from Van’s are very good.
The only “required” inspection is done by the FAA prior to flying the plane. However, I take every opportunity to have experienced eyes look over my build. Other kit plane builders, aircraft mechanics etc.
@@mikesherman9671 Okay, that's encouraging. Still, three years. Hmm....
Another cogent review, thanks. Love to see an RV-14 review sometime... Acrobatic capability. Also looking forward to your review of the Sling 4 with the new Rotax (915i?). Speed!
Both aircraft review in the works. Thanks.
Nice lookin machine. Elegant.
Hey could you make a review of the RV-8? Im really interested in it.
Hey, Mike! Thanks for the vid. Love the RV-10. It's my dream plane. However, at $150K (VFR) to $180K (IFR) all in cost, it's really too rich for my blood. The RV12iS with it's $90K (VFR) all in price is actually possible for me. Look forward to your next vid.
I love your videos. I wish you had mentioned some price ranges for this kit. Other than that awesome plane.
Thanks! Price is mentioned in the description.
MojoGrip cool. Thanks Mike.
Lord Dice X g
Nice
You are the best plane channel
My dream airplane
I want one!
Great video! Okay when do you start your build?! =D
Soon as I can get my wife onboard :) the itch is definitely there, not sure if you can tell from the videos 😛
Yep getting her onboard will be important! More importantly make sure to get her missions requirements too so you know which aircraft to get =) The RV-10 will most likely be able to do all of it though heh..
My #AOPA RV-10 is waiting for me, autumn 2020.
Alcatera seats.. that’s the new luxury!
I've been considering the RV-10, Velocity XL, and the new Sling 4 with the Rotax 915IS that is in development. They all seem to have load restrictions if you have full fuel. I always wonder how you suddenly remove 30 gallons of fuel so you can take 3 people for a ride. Great videos!
RV-10 four passengers full fuel no problem.
MG, center mount T-handle throttle or push pull as seen in video? Me... T-handle. Look forward to your reply. Thanks!
Side note: I like the brand name power plant use. Would do the same with Jet-A capability myself. Guess the Continental version if available still.
I think I like the Sling 4 better. This one is nice to but the Sling 4 monitors and adjust it's own mixture if I'm not mistaken.
you can install the same system in the rv.
lol @1:45. Definitely does not look like/as good as a Cirrus; but he is not wrong about a fraction of the cost. You do lose some options like Fiki and AC though (for someone based in Phoenix, that travels IFR, that's a big deal). Sidenote, that instrument panel is very nicely done...good job!
I am going back and forth regarding whether I should build or buy. I'd like to get to Commercial/CFI, and teach. I wouldn't be able to use experimental to teach though. Definitely don't need 2 airplanes. Not sure if I could get hired at an FBO to teach with no experience.
smitty631 there is a kit for FIKI and air conditioning available for the RV10
One of these crashed yesterday near the Golden Gate bridge.
Quick question, can these kits be purchase little by little or do you have to buy the whole kit at one time?
Believe it or not I think the kit does come in increments. I don't believe they send you everything at once even if you pay full. I could be wrong though. I would double check.
You can buy bit by bit, first crate is the tail cone and empenage (stabilator, rudder and elevator) it's a little over 4k, then wings, fuselage and finish kit that has landing gear and seats and bubble and stuff, fully customizable, can put in a turbo engine, oxygen and a Garmin g1000 glass panel to handle the 24000 foot ceiling if you have the time/money :) I'm getting this plane fer sure :D
is this KLZU? @mojogrip
I know it was a long time ago now but how did the situation with the Yamaha Stryker turn out?
Had to sell the Stryker when I moved across the country. I'm considering getting another bike once the weather gets clear.
MojoGrip Yes I know you had to sell it but, what I am asking is how did the sale go? Did u end up selling it to the dealer, or did someone buy it for your asking price etc. I was in a similar situation, just wondering how yours turned out! Thanks for the reply!
Oh yea dealer was a no go. They offered pennies on the dollar. I did find a lucky buyer on craigslist. Sold for 6k or 6.5k if I can remember.
MojoGrip ahh ok nice...glad it worked out for you (and the buyer).
CYCLEGAMER M
How do you not comment on the ridiculous bar that is in the middle if the front windshield
Hummel ultracruiser please review 🥺
Is avaionics included in vans rv 10 kit cause the plane u r making (sling tsi) includes them??
And also parachute does it includes????
No kit is always sold separately from all the other components. This is the case with the Sling Tsi as well.
Dude come over to KEZM
That’s my flight school
Can you do aerobatics witj RV10?
Hummph...I've owned 2 of them....The RV-4 and the RV-8.....Flew like a champ too ......for some RC models.....
Hey Mike, I am sure someone has already asked you about the price for this airplane I scrolled down the comments but either must have missed it or nobody actually asked the price. do you know the price for it?
Price for the kit is $50k. A finished one like this will cost $200k - $300k
If I thought my aircraft needed a parachute it would be a helicopter and I don't mess with helicopters.
Im a noob so maybe I missed it but was price ever mentioned?
This is a #homebuilt. You can find used Rv-10 like this in the $160k - $200k range.
Lovely airplane, but it would have been a lot better with a TIO-540. That RV-10 will really move with a turbo at 12,000-18,000.
Still better than a piper cherokee 😏
LoL, just saw the RV10 buzzed by FlightCHops, now MojoGrip! Who was first? lol
I am going to buy this airplane!
Did you buy the plane yet?
@@markmnorcal I purchased a C172M. Since purchasing, I completely restored the interior and painted the plane. It has great avionics, and I’m getting auto pilot installed next month. Since I was training on the 172, I thought it would be best to build hours before graduating to something else. As a low time pilot, it was also easiest to insure. Love the Vans though!
Was This made by vans like the shoe company
Mike, where are you based?
Hi Glenn, I'm based in Atlanta GA.
If this was factory built, it would be almost $100000 just for construction labor.
They should have designed the plane with a side yoke. It would be a lot easier to enter and exit.
Dude buy a windscreen for your mic.
IO 540 🙂
Only $200,000. I guess that's affordable to some folks!
100 lbs? That's just my wife's shoes!
limited in the baggage compartment as more weight there would place the CG too far rearward.
that's a fair amount for small airplanes
Vans!? The scateboard shoe maker?? Wow, thats a departure for them (so to speak ;)
i'm surprised to see Liam Neeson in this video.
no commercials
It's cool that you can get a kit plane for $61k but let's be honest about the real price. If you make $36 an hour and it takes you over 2000 hours to build that's going to cost you around $72,000. If you don't have all the required tools that's going to cost you a few thousand. You'll also need space to build it, if you live in an HOA community, you'll have to find something else. At the end of the day, are you really saving any money building something yourself?
I like the idea of small planes, the personal mobility, the idea of effortlessness in every aspect but I just see so much potential for improvement in this space.
2700 hours is just not effortless. Nothing should take that long. Even a homemade 747. And a 9 liter engine is some crazy legacy americana. Little over 200 horses from 9 liters??
Might I suggest a sleek tandem for the next build. Glider shape, minimal size, built from scratch. 3D print a flimsy body shape and drape with glass. Great aero, blade wings, high speed super efficient cruise.
Jesus, 2 hours a day lol for three years.
Being seeing your videos;,:. I see you have a training school;; I think hope to be able to trade with you ;,.:
At least this plane has two doors. This is a great plane but my wife says only high wing Cessnas can a women wearing a skirt and heels enter and exit like a lady. (This would be for 2 to 4 place single engine planes)
Who got $150,000 of spare change here
There is no passenger side on a plane
it be nice to get one for about 10k to make flying affordable,i dont see 350,000 unless it has a lot of titanium used in construction ...Then again,if it doesnt have an ejection seat im not flying in it!!!
I got one for 10k. But that was last night, then I woke up. It was a nice dream tho.
James Hauser I just dont see how they come up with the ridiculous amount, they only hurting themselves in the long run, they should be making flying affordable so they make more money...People are just greedy these days,i dont think it cost that much in materials to produce...I .ean i could understand if it was all carbon fiber ot titanium but aluminum and fiberglass are cheap materials....
James Holt: who is the greedy one? You tell me. A company pays good wages to skill sheet metal workers to form aluminum using millions dollar machine to ensure the plane can be assembled precisely and safely. The engine company hires skilled engineers and mechanics to put together a reliable engine so it won't cut out and kill the pilot and passengers. The avionics company hires skilled software engineers to build a reliable avionics so you know if the plane is flying right side up and the plane won't exceed VNE. And you want they to pay their workers for nothing so you can have a 10K airplane? Heck, just the raw aluminum alone costs over 30K.
2Phast4Rocket My point exactly, flying is for rich people only,it is no way affordable at all for the general public...
@@jamesholt7340 so now the government owes everybody an airplane? Save up and buy your own.
I think its price would 15000 to 25000 but its to much
