90% of the time these “ colours of the year” really don’t take off too quickly. I work in cabinetry, you really get to see which colours designers are loving and working with IRL. It’s more like “ colours of the decade” VS “of the year”

My friends' new base cabinets are in a custom color very similar to Blue Nova. It was mixed to match the backsplash tile. The counters are white quartz and the upper cabinets are stark white. Very modern coastal - there is a water view from the great room. I'll let them know that they are ahead of the curve :)

There is a funny scene in the 1948 movie Mr Blandings Builds His Dreamhouse, where Myrna Loy is giving specific examples for each shade of paint for the interior rooms (Robins EggBlue, Butter Yellow, etc.). She leaves, the contractor turns to the painter and says, “You got that? Red, yellow, blue, and green.”

When using a light color in a small space I think it makes sense. I painted one small bathroom sort of a ballerina pink (with glitter added because I think it is fun), I painted the walls and ceiling. It looks very nice. I painted the baseboards white, though they do need to be repainted, I made a mistake with the type of caulk I used. You were ahead of your time!

I need to paint a small wall in a tiny toilet under the stairs (removed a radiator and patched the wall and love the colour that’s in there) and it occurred to me that the ceiling is already the colour of the walls and I ought to go ahead and paint the baseboards the same… it would help with the small space.

Purple is such an inspiring, magical color (in the right shades), and it's perked up these spaces so nicely. Would absolutely recommend. I just refreshed all my rooms, after 22 years of living with what I did when we moved in, for $$$, and I watch HGtV and a very few good channels like this. I do not do trendy-trends. Nevertheless, I have decided that home fashions are a huge contributor to trashing the planet, as well as getting us to part with our money. Love that Nick said at the top, if you like your colors, keep them. But the ripping out of floors, one example, to put in gray (a few years ago) and now putting in light floors, after before the gray, dark floors. Well, hardwood floors used to be more of a mid-range color, and were “in fashion” in color and width, for decades. I am now boycotting hgtv.

Remember that these channels, magazines, and shows have large staff developing more projects and "to do's that people could ever start and complete. Then, they rinse/repeat the process daily, monthly, and weekly, etc. The net result is that their business model can not allow one to have more than a brief interval of equilibrium before they work on making people dissatisfied. Oscar Wilde said, "Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable we are forced to change it every six months." The turnaround time since then has been reduced considerably!

Of course, you can guide them… I really liked how he talked about Topaz + White Dove working with wood flooring/furnishings. Taking flooring into consideration is HUGE. Also, doing a video on what color of flooring is best for your room, lighting, etc., would be a great video, so many choices these days! The best $300 I ever spent was for a color consultant for my townhouse. She picked a light golden yellow for my living and dining rooms when she saw my MCM tourquoise pottery collection and artwork and teak and similar color furniture, and the way the light shifts over the day. I would never have figured it out by myself, but I haved loved her choice every day. Picking paint based at least partly on the things you love and will keep, and how it will look in different parts of a room in different light makes sense to me, based on how well it turned out for me.

This is my kind of palette. I love soft, desaturated colors, and always warm neutrals. I’m always and forever a soft ivory girl. That’s been my indoor color for over 20 years…so yeah…I’m either dedicated or boring, but I love it. My shade now is less warm/buttery than it was in 2000, so it’s more creamy white…that’s updated for me! Dove White’s always popular. I just change up decor with pops of seasonal color. I will never, ever, ever…live in anything cool, and gray, especially on my walls! You’re right, Nick…this year’s palette is soft, balanced, cohesive…last year was so disjointed & jarring! Only color I liked on it was the Tofino Sunset. That might have been pretty and an interesting “color neutral” in a room…though I’d still just be admiring it from afar, in my warm ivory room. :)

**oops correction, meant “White Dove” above. “Dove White” was actually my color in 2000/ California paints. I wish I’d done White Dove when I repainted in 2019, somehow I only discovered it after we painted, and after I painstakingly perused every ivory! I think I saw it and when it wasn’t like my old Dove White, went over it. I got close with Mountain Peak White, Benjamin Moore, but White Dove does seem softer, a tad warmer.

Not a fan of color drenching . However , I do paint outlets & switches the wall color to blend in . Years ago when wallpaper was prominent , I did outlet covers & switch plates in the wallpaper ( again , to blend in ) even to the point of lining up the patterns , then a matching color on the actual outlet if needed . Obsessive ? Perhaps ... but the finished " smooth " look , no visual speed bumps , was worth it ! 🖌🎨

I just painted my 500sq foot living room a very bold blue (I would say a bit more similar to last years starry night). The room has a vaulted ceiling with walls 10' to 16' tall. I have large chunky white trim lots of windows and a big white fireplace and a couple of big white bookshelves. I have accented with black leather and wood furniture (leaning towards the topaz warm brown) and lots of plants. So to say I am a fan of the blue and the topaz would be an understatement. I think these colours are gorgeous this year! I would actually love to submit photos or videos for Nick to critique!

I like these colors! I actually really like Honeybee. I feel like it could look really cool in a more retro space. I also like Pristine. I think peachy off whites don’t get enough love. Especially since n north-facing rooms or rooms with fewer windows, an off white with a slightly peach undertone in an eggshell finish can give the illusion of more sunlight bouncing around the room. Whereas if you painted the same room a cool-toned color or even a stark white it could look cold or sterile and a more brown toned off white could make it look dirty. (I’m also a fan of Sherwin Williams Ibis White for this reason. Painted a north-facing room this once and it immediately brightened it up.)

It makes me happy to see your enthusiasm about color; I could listen to you talk about color theory all day! What was that thing you touched on, "hex code" or something? I didn’t quite catch what you said. A thing you can plunk colors into and it shows them to you on the colorwheel? You said you didn't want to bore us with the details and I'm like, "please, please do!" *I would love a video on that please!* I love so many colors, it's almost excruciating to choose one, and then choose another one to go with the first one. Ugh! I definitely like this year's pallette over last year, but I do like the blues in each. I really liked 2021's pallette too. I remember the trend in the 90's of huge houses with steep roofs and many roof angles. I went to some open houses and was shocked by the size compared to the "cheap" finishes. My daughter and her husband bought a house of that era and literally the kitchen cupboards fell apart. I was renting a place near by that was built in the 30's and the kitchen cupboards were great, still. They are now living in a smaller home in the DC area that was built with much care in the 70's (with horrible kitchen renovation.) It has a family size fireplace where the whole wall is covered in beautiful stone. (All of the houses there have that stone outside or inside.) Those touches make a neighborhood sing! So in the 90's size mattered. But their current house will be loved (hopefully with a kitchen renovation in the future.)

One half of the living area is painting matte black with some ashy tones. I got a rug with some rust looking red and it has green in it that I wanted to pull onto the other half of the living area to pull togrthet the black walls, the emerald curtains and the rug. So that is almost perfect! Im glad i didn't settle for a paint choice and waited. I really love it.

This is such an encouraging and thoughtful review. I have followed you off and on for a couple of years now. I appreciate how you articulate the complex subject of colour and how it makes us feel. I was not aware of the 2024 Benjamin Moore colour palette, and when I clicked on this review, I had literally just finished filling an online cart with sample sizes of Farrow and Ball wall paints I have taken forever (years) to pick out. The samples I chose align well with the good balance of warms and cools, and "just right" tonal qualities that you highlight here. While I've chosen a different brand (I came here as part of a search to find which of the Benjamin Moore whites might work well as ceiling and trim paint with the F&B walls), the insights you offer here really validate the tone and the colours I want to go with on the walls. I already have a violet-grey F&B Dove Tale in one bedroom that I am going to keep as it remains as intriguing as it was when first painted 10 years ago. You can imagine how happy I was to see that this BM palette includes something from the purple family. Thanks again for your helpful insights on the many factors that affect how humans feel about all things colour.
