Thanks appreciate it. Bells and whistles and bears, oh my!
Thanks, like your shirt.
Lived on the island my whole life, you’re right about the bear spray but some of those calls could be heard as animal in distress. Your better off with bear spray that Rambo knife and a hatchet with a long neck. Obviously short barreled shotgun with slugs or a 45/70 is preferred.
I’ve bushwhacked my hole life in everything and thankfully never had to come into a real altercation with bear, wolves or a cougar. But don’t get a false sense of security with those items. These animals can rip us to shreds like nothing. Be careful and use you’re intuition.
45/70
Depending where you live, no guns while hiking in Canada
Going straight for the Rambo knife. Gonna have a necklace of every item around my neck, over my shoulders and a gas grenade just in case *sweat* lol
gotta have a gas grenade haha
@@IdRatherBeHiking LOL
Thank you for sharing. My singing tends to scare all animals away 😊. I do carry most of those items.
haha nice, if I sang bears would run for their dear lives... or eat me to make it stop hah
i carry an electric whistle. very loud and effective. also a taser baton is a good defense. the zap scares away human & animal.
I've looked at those taser batons, pretty cool but illegal in Canada
@@IdRatherBeHiking glad it’s not illegal in California. the taser baton saved me from aggressive unleashed dogs while walking my little dog. the sound of the zap makes them think twice.
@@mcwalker949 2 years ago I was attacked by 2 different german shepards, could have used one of those then! Especially with a small dog around, a good way to protect them. Im just thinking if that was built into a hiking pole, would be pretty cool
@@IdRatherBeHiking there are flashlight tasers but the length of the taser baton has kept me safe on my hikes. i also clip a rear view mirror attached to my ball cap that cyclist use to see who’s behind them. i don’t like people or animals coming up from behind me. that’s how i was ready for a cane corso dog that was about to bite me.
I love my Rambo knife, I bought it 40 years ago it workers great use it for off trail hiking smaller than my machete, when it comes to a deterrent to keep baers away from your food sack I've often thought that you could coat it with Vick's vapor rub it kept my dogs from chewing the furniture
ya for off-trail stuff, I've done a lot of bushwhacking, there is an argument for a big knife or machete going through the bush. I've never heard of that vick's vapour rub trick though
@@IdRatherBeHiking the Vick's vapor rub is something I came up with that on my own like I said it work great on the dog put it right on the spot were he was chewing, scolding , yelling and squirting water didn't work however I didn't have the opportunity to test it on a bear kinda hope I don't have to 🤪
@@danielfegley2735 I'm really curious now how a bear would react. Need someone to test this at a zoo.
Like you I keep my Bear spray on my Shoulder strap. Easy fast access. It's always attached to my daypack so i never forget it.
I didn't even take mine out for the video just to prove a point that it always stays up there. After running into a mother bear and cubs on my Mount Underwood adventure which I forgot my bear spray I don't leave home without it
If bear spray is all you have remember to take it out when you are in thick brush, just in case.
Great video idea!
Cheers
Do horns scare cougars?
what about an Aztec death whistle Would that affect a attacking or close by predator?
haha good question! Considering how rare they are, probably something I won't be able to test out
Does the clown horn scare Trudeau?
I'm not trying to be mean but this video is highly optimistic, and doesn't really prepare people for actually dangerous encounters.
The idea that you're going to take a very small pocket knife, stab it into a grizzly bear, and you confidently expect that the bear will go away is ridiculous.
Bear spray is 33% effective at charging , aggressive, brown bears, and if you don't believe me I have sources in one of my videos that I can show you.
Black bears, in general are, less affected by bear spray than brown bears by the way.
Rubber slugs have greater range and effectiveness than bear spray, and should be the primary non-lethal tool. Obviously, you should have brenneke classic magnums or a handgun loaded with flat nose bullets (FMJ or hard cast lead) in case the non-lethal option isn't enough.
I'm not trying to be mean, but you're setting people up for failure.
Studies show bear spray effective at 98.8%. I'm from Canada, you can't walk around in the woods with a magnum, this is true too for many States in America. The point of the pocket knife story is to arm people with a basic knife to give themselves a chance. Its no different than telling someone its safer to walk down a lit sidewalk at night vs a dark alley, its giving people the ability to protect themselves better. There are always exceptions and fringe cases, some grizzlies have learned to close their eyes when bear spray is deployed then charge through it. They proceed to attack someone then rangers go out there and kill that bear. A lot of people are just starting out and have zero knowledge of what they need or even the case of bear spray put in the bottom of their bag. I think being overly cautious and staying inside, in cities will lead to mass depression and mental health issues which is setting people up for failure.
@@IdRatherBeHiking I've read the studies about bear spray effectiveness and the devil is in the details. The majority of bear spray uses included in such studies are people going out and intentionally hazing bears, not actual defensive uses.
It's funny, the people who disagree with me about the effectiveness of bear spray are never interested in looking at the sources I give. If we are not both looking at the facts, we are not disagreeing about the facts, but about something else entirely.
Not once did I mention that people should be overly cautious and stay inside. Once people understand the risks and how to minimize them, they should feel free to enjoy the outdoors however they want.
Even if being overly cautious was a significant problem in cities, it would be dwarfed by much more damaging things to mental health like high crime and drug abuse.
I totally understand that some people have zero knowledge about protecting themselves from dangerous animals, which is why I give very specific and detailed advice of what to do and what not to do in my videos.

As he stated in Canada you can't have guns. I will say that there are quite the number of videos where people stabbed bears through mouth and neck and lived to tell the tale on youtube.
@@KU-mg9el Yes people have survived using knives as a tool of last resort.
Does it mean you should use it as a first resort? No.
Even if you are only limited to a melee weapon, why wouldn't you use something larger and more effective than a knife?
Oh yes. As if people can and are just walking around armed 24/7.
