Legionary Clothing - Fun Facts and Historical Presentation

  • A full detailed presentation on Military clothing of an Imperial legionary together with some epic Ultra HD clips in full Roman armour.
A Roman legion was the largest unit of the Roman army, consisting of centuries as the basic units.
For most of the Roman Imperial period, the legions formed the Roman army's elite heavy infantry, recruited exclusively from Roman citizens, while the remainder of the army consisted of auxiliaries, who provided additional infantry and the vast majority of the Roman army's cavalry.
A legion consisted of several cohorts of heavy infantry known as legionaries. It was almost always accompanied by one or more attached units of auxiliaries, who were not Roman citizens and provided cavalry, ranged troops and skirmishers to complement the legion's heavy infantry.
From the time of Gaius Marius onwards, legionaries received 225 denarii a year; this basic rate remained unchanged until Domitian, who increased it to 300 denarii. The soldiers did not receive all the money in cash, as the state deducted a clothing and food tax from their pay. To this wage, a legionary on active campaign would hope to add the booty of war. Slaves could also be claimed from the prisoners of war and divided amongst the legion for later sale, which would bring in a sizeable supplement to their regular pay.
All legionary soldiers would also receive a praemia on the completion of their term of service: a sizeable sum of money and/or a plot of good farmland; farmland given to veterans often helped in establishing control of the frontier regions and over rebellious provinces.

I have two questions about the Romans
    1) Did the standard bearer (Signifer ) participate in combat ?
    2) The Scutum and Gladius were very effective combination but both were replaced in the 3rd century by an oval shield and the longer Spatha sword and I would like to know why ?
Thanks for answering my questions and have a good day :)

Hello! As I`m living in the area between Vindobona and Carnuntum, I really love how lively you bring our history closer to us. Better than my history teacher long ago, and he was really good. If you don`tmind, I would like to ask some questions that came up watching that Clip: Is it known what happened to lefthanded soldiers- were there special lefthanded centuries or did they all have to fight righthanded? Was the pilum the only ranged weapon for the legiones and everything else done by auxilliares? or were the archers regulary troops? How were Roman pioneers included in the military system? Extra pioneer legiones, or a troop for each of the legiones, or attached to a Military district? Finally, if you get the time, Ì`d love to see more about Roman siege machines as well as Roman defense and pioneer work-but I`m aware that those are Projects probably to long and expensive for CZcams...

Regarding those boots, arent they really awkward to wear on hard ground? From my experience with nailed soles, you slide around like crazy on anything that isn´t soft as grass. Marching in these on a Roman road seems quite a hassle to me.
The alternative I could think of is if only half of the sole had nails, you could be more comfortable on hard ground as well as soft one, but the ones you showed have nails all the way across.

Hey Metatron, what is your opinion on the NeiderBeiber (or Buck) helm used by the Legionaries from the 210'sAD onwards?
Do you think it is better that the Imperial Italic and Imperial Gallic helms it replaced?
Personally, I dont believe a bit of extra protection around and below the ear is a fair trade off for a much more limited view and the inability to look up. I dont think it was very widespread.
