- Coming up the story of a very unique rockstar. Adam Ant... First of all his mother was Paul McCartney’s Housekeeper and he in turn got to walk Paul’s Dog and even snuck into his music room. later he and his band Adam and the Ants had 7 songs in the top 40 at the same time. Then in 1983, he was voted “World’s Sexiest Man” in the MTV viewer’s poll. His odd image was envied by many, including the King of Pop, while his music dominated the New Wave landscape of the 80s taking him to the top of the charts and the face of early MTV… Today we break down his career including his MTV new wave classic Good Two Shoes. There were dark times.. After a maniacal episode in 2003...he was found by police- curled up in a ball & sobbing in the basement of a North London cafe. It’s the story of a post punk icon, and his breakout solo smash Goody Two Shoes that was confused by some as a critique on righteous living but was actually a manifesto about exploitative journalism is NEXT…on Professor of Rock.

In November, 1975, a budding, 19 year old musician named Stuart Goddard saw the Sex Pistols perform their first public concert at the St. Martin’s College of Art in London. It was the a spell-binding, watershed experience, that compelled Goddard to forge a new path to achieve his own fame & notoriety. The ground-breaking performance of the Sex Pistols, inspired Goddard to change his name, and assemble a new band that captured the audacious moxie what he had just witnessed.
It led to the invention of Adam Ant, and the formation of Adam & the Ants in 1977. Adam Ant was an only child, who grew up in an impoverished area of post-war London. He was raised in an anguishing environment of domestic violence. His parents took out their unhappiness on each other. There were constant arguments between his mother & father that often escalated to physical altercations- something no child should have to endure.
But there were some cool, formative moments, particularly around his mother, Betty Kathleen Smith. For a time, Betty was a housekeeper for Paul McCartney….How crazy is that? When he was just 10 years old, Stuart used to help his Mum by walking Paul’s sheepdog, couldn’t resist sneaking into Paul’s private music room.
After high school, Stuart enrolled in art college in the North end of London, and perhaps because of the loveless. turbulent environment that plagued his childhood, he rushed into a relationship, and married Carol Mills when he was only 21 and moved in with her parents. Stuart struggled emotionally. He felt suffocated in suburban, married life, feeling that it was holding him back from chasing his dream of a prolific career in music.
His despair came to a head when Stuart swallowed a bunch of pills from his mother in-law’s medicine cabinet. - Zábava

Thank you for this. Adam Ant is such a spectacular human being. I had the opportunity to meet him. He was exactly as cool as you would expect. After we shook hands and had our picture taken, he could have sent me away, but he treated me like a friend and had me stick around and chatted with me for a little while. Such a gentleman!
I got to tell him how much his music meant to me and how his struggle with mental illness had strengthened me in my own struggle.
There is nothing in this world that will EVER make me remove Adam Ant from the TOP of my list of HEROES.

We played Goody Two Shoes at my wedding reception 15 years ago and it was the highlight of the evening. People rushed to the dance floor and danced until some of them literally fell down (!) - got up - and kept on dancing. I still laugh every time I think about it. Just a magic moment with a perfect 80s classic. Made the happiest day of my life even better.
I saw Adam Ant in 1982 found two tickets on the floor in the mall THANK YOU who ever lost them!!!

I saw Adam Ant just a couple of years ago in a small venue - it was one of the best concerts I've been to. The whole place was singing to every song, the music was awesome, his vocals were great and he put on an amazing show. Hands down my favorite show in a long time.
I'm so jealous! I didn't know he was still performing. Time for me to see if he's anywhere near me anytime soon.
Loved Adam as a teen. I saw him live for the first time during the Friend or Foe tour. His abstaining from drugs and alcohol was a good influence on me back then. Saved me a lot of trouble! I actually ended up taking bass lessons from Gary Tibbs, bassist of the Ants. Adam is a resilient brilliant individual!

I'm a little Jesus freak, but I'll tell you... I love Adam Ant. LOL. I'm a singer/songwriter too and when I would sing in places, some of the seedier elements would sing Goody Two Shoes to me because I didn't smoke, do drugs or drink alcohol. Oddly... I grew up in a home torn to bits by alcoholism and screaming and violence and I had the same response as Adam Ant. I don't want it. Not judgy of others... I just saw too much of it and didn't want any more. The music is a natural high for me. Thanks for spotlighting this. This was stellar.

I had nothing but harmony growing up, yet it still required absolutely no discipline at all, to stay away from that stuff-- because frankly, it just looks stupid, and could never come out ahead in any honest cost-benefit analysis. Easy choice. "Must be something inside". (Gee what could it be)?

Surprised that the story of Adam hiring McLaren and being cut from his own band didn't make the cut here. It's an incredible story, gave Adam the fire in his belly to make Adam & The Ants a chart busting band.

"Desperate But Not Serious" is definitely my favorite Adam Ant song, but I did hit up my local import record store and bought every album he released, including the album from The Ants.

One thing I really appreciate about your videos is that you are clearly always looking for the good: the good stories, the good times, the good music (of course), but also the good in people. I knew when you started talking about Adam's spiral downward that you would do more than just describe it in a tabloid way, gossiping about someone's 'failure'. I figured you'd show sympathy, and follow him back up into hopefulness. And you did.
Thanks for keeping it real, but also looking for the positive! It's such a cliche in the world of rock and roll that artists rise high, but then fall -- often in disaster -- and then get forgotten, or mostly remembered for the tragedy. That does happen, and not just in music. But none of these amazing people and their stories need to be forgotten, nor should they be. And all of them are complex human beings who deserve compassion. You're doing great work in reminding all of us of that. And, man, you do it so well and so often!

Your retelling of their history and their artistry gives me an appreciation that I didn't have at the time. I think it's due to your positive approach and your deep admiration. Adam Ant was one of those artists I didn't much care for in the 80s, but I have learned to like as I grew up and could understand and appreciate his songs more. Now that I've heard his story, I think my respect for him has gone up even more. Thank you for the great tribute to him.

Adam Ant was as original as they come. I had wondered why he didn't have a long career because he was the face of MTV, now I know. That swing sound with the horns was a masterstroke. Great episode professor. Glad to hear he overcame his depression, hopefully

I think it's good to see someone conquer their demons - one in three of us will suffer from some sort of mental health issue in our lifetime but I think Marco one of the Ants who stuck by Adam through thick and thin and seems incredibly no nonsense probably helped a lot.

I was obsessed with Adam Ant when my sister played Stand and Deliver for me. She is 8 years older than me and she was my musical gateway. Being a kid in the 80’s in small town Alabama, Adam Ant was a revelation for me.
We made fun of the artists of the 80's as teens in the 90's ...but looking back in hindsight, that decade had a massive amount of creativity with their looks and a huge amount of balls and commitment to get out there wearing that stuff.
Definitely made for a much more diverse landscape than any era that's come after.

The costumes and distinct looks have enhanced the quality of the musical experience in the 80s for me.

I used to point out how much more dynamic and interesting things had been but people just couldn't see it. I also used to remind them that in the early to mid eighties the seventies music and the fashions from it were reviled, but people just have short, short memories I guess!

I remember clearly hearing the song "Xerox" and loving that voice. I was around 7 years old at the time. Then I heard "Ant Music" and was singing that in my best childish way. Though it was when I saw the video for "Stand and Deliver" that I knew what kind of men I liked... ones in make up! (I had unknowingly already discovered that in seeing Ziggy Stardust and Dr Frank N Furter long before seeing Adam)
"Goody Two Shoes" has always been my least liked Adam Ant song. Adam deserved so much more credit and success in the music biss, but I am happy that he is still getting his thrill on stage and I hope one day I will be able to see him perform.

Thank you for this episode. Adam Ant has always been my favorite artist from the 80's. 2 things: Adam didn't break up his band, his manager convinced the drummers to leave in order to join "Bow Wow Wow", the other band he was managing. ALSO, Phil Collins played drums on "Strip" and "Puss 'n' Boots.
I think you may be getting confused. Malcolm McLaren convinced the first Ants line-up (Dirk Wears White Sox) to leave and form Bow Wow Wow. Adam broke up the more successful second Ants line-up after the Prince Charming album, which (in my view) was nowhere near the level of Kings of the Wild Frontier, despite singles Stand and Deliver, Prince Charming and proto-rap single Ant Rap...
@@si_w8201 Agreed. But my understanding is he broke up the 'second Ants' because he wanted to try and break into the American music scene, and the rest of the band didn't really care. So he formed the Adam Ant 'duo' with Marco. (oh, and spot on. Kings is better than Prince...)

I always thought that "Strip" was one of his better songs and really deserved radio airplay.
Video may have "killed the radio star" back in the days of MTV, but the lack of radio rotation made this little gem of a song widely unknown in the US.
I just saw Strip on MTV's 80s show the other day. I had totally forgotten about that one. So fun!
That video is one of the most underrated from the early 80s.
Adam was one of those artists I couldn’t take my eyes off of and ended up loving the music. Strip is still one of my favorite albums.
Once again, great content! I was a huge Adam Ant fan in the 80’s going back to his post punk tunes. One of the best performances I’ve ever seen 1982 on the US tour. The man sang and danced all over the stage and had the Stanley Theater crowd in the palm of his hands. Just plain awesome.

Great video. I never thought the song was that hard to interpret. Always seemed obvious to me that it was aimed at himself. On another note, I think that it was amazing it took so long for his mental illness to get the better of him. With all the success and attention, in an era that really still didn't understand mental illness, he held it together for a long time considering he'd been suffering since he was young.
The video was pretty obvious. There was literally a reporter mouthing - don't drink, don't smoke, what do you do? To Adam in the video.
Bipolar is usually a time degenerative illness - it gets much worse and obvious as one ages.
Agreed, Paul. Having been a huge fan since 1980 and the Kings album, I knew it was about the intrusion from the media. When you know what it's about you realise how clever it really is.
Ant Invasion, Killer in the Home, Scorpios, Strip, Beat My Guest. Adam and Marco is one of the greatest songwriting teams the UK ever produced.
In an interview Marco said that he could join him when they're ready to record but as far as being super involved in the lyrics and the writing it wasn't as much of a collaboration as I thought my whole life! 😮
p.s. the older I get the more I realize how much of a really amazing producer he was. all of his songs have so much more detail than someone would give him credit for!😊

This is my forever crush! 40 years now! I've met Marco, and Adam twice, kissed his lips, told him how much he has meant to me and his his life made me who I am. Totally charged my life when I was 12. I didn't know anything about music or style I didn't really have any kind of sense of self until I found him. I will never not love him and I will never listen to him❤❤❤❤❤❤
I was in Middle School when this came out. I was never quite sure what to make of it or him. But one of the glories of the 1980s, specially the early half of the decade is the sheer number of interesting and unique artists that were available to help people come to terms with their own identities or to learn about others that were different from themselves. I was never a massive fan, but he was an indelible part of my childhood.

Well said. I am convinced the music of the eighties played a huge part in changing societal attitudes and challenging prejudice of all kinds. Other factors have been in play for decades but music has helped break down barriers to acceptance and changed hearts and minds in so many ways. Long may it continue to fulfil this part of its role in life.

😂 I definitely had the meaning of this song wrong. But in my case I always took it as a compliment that he was singing about somebody like me and I was proud to be a Goody 2 shoes. Now I'm proud that I get to be just like Adam and be a part of "the Goody 2 shoes club" WITH him.

He's still got it. I've been a fan since I was at school and the first album, too young then to go to the gigs, but I've seen him live quite a few times over the last few years, and the band he has now are just consumate performers and he's incredible. The voice, the moves, the songs, all of it.

Adam Ant was such a mysterious type. I compare him to Johnny Depp. Appear weird to the world but brilliant in their art. Can't take them for face value. You have to look deeper. You can never know the entire story behind their appearance. You revealed things that I never expected from Adam Ant. I thought he made his dime and just disappeared.

I was a fan of Adam and the Ants when I discovered them while in high school, probably in 79 or 80. His style of dress and music were wonderful, and the general mood of the music seemed very positive to me. I certainly never thought he was a special emissary of the devil. LMAO!
You mentioned how he was kicked off of stages for sounding terrible early in his career... I personally think that they never sounded good, but the rawness of their sound and the pure energy of the performance is what makes them great.

Adam Ant was the whole package and his music is still one my favorites from the 80's!!! Back then listening to the Ca. Alternative station KROQ he was continuely on rotation. I love his music and will forever love that time in the 80's at his peak....thank you Professor❤

One of my favorites of all time! Always pulled for him and thought his anti drug stance, which I also adhere to, was very brave in the rock world. I saw him perform his anthems show at the Portland Oregon zoo amphitheatre when he was 62 I believe. 20 year old performers only wish they could keep up with him! Ant music for ant people!

Cool to learn that Adam Ant is in the no drinks, no drugs, no smoking camp. As soon as the Prof. mentioned that, I thought, oh he's like Randy Bachman in that regard. I've heard that one of the points of friction between Randy and the Guess Who was the drinking and drugs. Randy and Adam prove that one does not need recreational drugs and booze to be a top Rocker. 🎸😎

Adam Ant was my first and only musical obsession. I bought every album; I memorized every song. I discovered him during his Goody Two Shoes phase and dove deep into the back catalog. My “favorites” playlist is FILLED with his songs.
After The Police, Adam is my favourite artist. A true original. Seen him a dozen times and he's fabulous live. I've even got the Antmusic for Sexpeople' logo tattooed on my back 🙂

I’ve been subscribed to your channel for a couple of months and grooving on the entertaining videos, learning about rock stars and songs that are usually outside my usual preferences. This has grown my appreciation for 70’s rock and understanding of how magical a great song is: how it often comes out of thin air or birthed by the creative forces of one or more musicians.
I was a big Adam fan when he had the Ants behind him, and lost interest after Goody Two Shoes. Curious about his new efforts but mostly appreciating him for his 80’s creative successes.
This video is a thorough dive into Adam’s history and one I never expected to find on your channel. It filled me with nostalgia, curiosity and a huge appreciation for your work and delivery. Not only do you cover the greatest and most successful but also those who occupied a fame spot for a short time.

Truth be told , I was not a big fan of " Goody Two Shoes " when it came out in '81 , but nostalgia aside it has grown on me over the past couple of years and I do think it's a great song. It really shines four decades on.

Thank you for sharing his story. I'm a life-long Ant fan and I learned a few new things about him. I saw him in concert right before the pandemic. A spectacular showman as always. Will be seeing him in California in May and I can't wait.

I’ve long been a UK fan of his since I was 15 and heard Dog Eat Dog. I still love him 43 years later having been to many of his gigs and even getting the band logo tattoo.

As pop goes, the music was catchy enough to be interesting. Never knew of his background, quite eye-opening. Just goes to show you don't need to join in on rock 'n roll debauchery to have demons that overcome you. So glad to hear he has found his way, kudos.

I have to say one of the things I really love when you interview famous musicians, is that you don't constantly interrupt them. You let them tell their stories. There have been so many interviews I listen to where the interviewer seems more interested in hearing themselves talk rather than the person they are interviewing, which I find so frustrating. You know how to do a proper interview!
I bought this single in June of 1982, while an exchange student in West Germany. I guess the song was brand new at the time. I also bought a quirky record called Da Da Da by Trio, which was released around that time as well

I loved Adam and the Ants.Still have the Kings of the Wild Frontier and Prince Charming albums I bought as a kid when they came out.Still give KOTWF a spin regularly.I didn't really get into his stuff after the Ants,but I recently listened to Goody Two Shoes after years and it's a great song.I picked up the 7 inch at a record fair a few months ago.

❤Adam Ant❤ I have done since I first heardthe single Antmusic in Feb 1980. I was only just 11yo and it took me until 2011(?) to see him live. When I did, I played at my most local venue at the time, the Picturedrome in Holmfirth and I was good friends with the in house sound engineer so blagged my way into being one of the roadie’s for the Adam gig! Never got to meet the man himself but I did meet the musicians who made up his band (RIP Tom, guitarist). I’ve seen Adam live another three or four times since then.

I first heard Adam & the Ants on a compilation called Exposed: A cheap peek at today's provacative new rock.I was hooked. The Burundi style has influenced my drumming forevermore. I finally saw him in 2013 & when he returned a few years later. I lost 3 lbs. dancing!! A splendid time, and still tons of women!

I think I was like you, Adam. I was in my early teens when Goody Two Shoes came out, and at first thought he was mocking somebody for being conceited. Somewhere between then and now I got it that he was the other way around, he was singing about being mocked for being perceived as a prude.

I never realised that Adam was a teetotaler behind his hardcore image. Also, it's a great "Take That" towards the media for constantly invading his privacy at every turn.

Adam was my earliest musical idol. I had posters on my walls, I drew pictures of him, bought all the records and you'd best believe I got dressed up as him at Halloween! I used to cut out images from magazines and even record sleeves, stick them onto cardboard and made badges for my denim jacket. I had loved Adam & the Ants and was horrified when they split, as I thought it was the end.
I was so happy when I heard he was recording as a solo artist, and I knew he'd be back in the charts. In the build up to its release, Goody Two Shoes started getting a lot of airplay and my excitement was at bursting point. I knew he was debuting GTS on a light entertainment show on ITV on a Summer evening in 1982, so as it was about to start I abandoned the kid I was playing football with and ran into the house to watch. I remember it like it was yesterday because I was so excited to have my hero back.

One of my all time favorites.
I've seen him 4 times front row since 2012 and met him before one show at a hotel. Since he figured out I didn't say a word to anyone at the show where he was staying I got to have breakfast with him the next morning. It's a long story how it all went down but definitely a dream come true. He was so nice to me. I even am still holding onto a ticket for his next U.S. tour which was canceled due to Cvd. He says he's still coming so hold onto your tickets if you have them. Great video about Adam, so glad I found it.
