I never heard of Bugner before. This guy was definitely bugging Ali because he was taller than Ali and had a reach like Ali. This is not what Ali was used to. He was used to brawlers coming at him with shorter reaches than him. And he would just keep them away by jabbing them and dancing around them in circles. This would generally work out for Ali.
This guy Bugner was a tougher nut to crack. Ali had to adjust his style to beat him. Interesting fight!
Thanks to whoever uploaded it and to CZcams for letting me see it. 👏🏻

Nope! Ali apparently adjusted his fighting style to deal with this big fighter. He usually did the stick and run which worked out well for him. He ‘d keep jabbing and dancing around the ring and sometimes counterpunch but generally avoid getting flat footed and toe to toe with anyone too long. That was not good for him as Joe Frazier showed. This Bugner fight was no joke!
Ali had two really tough fights with Ken Norton that some people say Norton won even! I can see their point because Norton kept punching away at Ali and Ali never could knock him out and down completely. I don’t recall if he did or not because Norton was just too tough and had an iron jaw apparently. These are not the guys you want to fight if you can avoid them!
Norton may have even knocked down Ali from what I remember once or twice.
But there was no knockout on either side and you generally have to knock out the Champion decisively to take the Crown.
Those fights along with Foreman and Forman fighting Norton are some the greatest Heavyweight fights ever! With Spinks, Frazier, and Holmes, too! They all fought each other back then! Ali was a great talker and entertainer!
Now I don’t even know who the Champ is or care!
Back then the whole world 🌎 listened on the Radio 📻 or watched Fights on TV 📺!
I’m glad they are available on CZcams! So I can relive those great days of Heavyweight Bouts! Also, the great Era of Middleweight Bouts as well with Leonard, Duran, Hagler, and Hearns all fighting each other!
Those were great matches and usually they fought each other 3 times each!
      Classic Fights! 👏🏻

Bugner was also one of Ali's sparring partners and pals outside of the ring, so they knew each other's fighting style pretty well beforehand. In the end though, Ali was just the better more adaptive fighter when it came time to fight in the ring. Although, that's basically a given for him. Bugner was still no slouch though. I'm forever a fan of both.

The second I saw how big he was I thought this is not going to be a cake walk for Ali. He is one big dude with a long reach. And suddenly Ali had to change his posture and look up more and try to avoid those jabs. It was usually Ali scoring quick points throwing jabs and running around in circles and avoiding getting tagged.
That wasn’t going to work with Bugner. The man was almost a giant. Anyway it’s a very interesting and tough fight because Ali had to struggle. Ken Norton gave him some tough battles too! Some say Norton beat Ali.

Bugner was taller, longer reach, way younger, and pretty fast hands when he used them, but about a 10th the athleticism of Ali. Ali is literally playing chess, thinking moves ahead with 4 punch combinations to open up the head. Supreme ability and beautiful to watch again and again... See him at times pop lightly up on his toes to come in over the top with right hand so fast you can barely see it. Even Lomechenko doesnt have that footwork and fluidity... Due to the schools in Malaysia were given permission to allow their pupils / their students to watch the fight at their schools respectively through television set which were brought to the schools by their teachers . In 1975, I was studying in the standard 5[which, now the standard 5, has been changed to the Year 5, which also means the age of the pupils who study in the standard 5 / year 5 is 11 years old]

The Ali Bugner matches were some of the most under-appreciated matches. Bugner was taller and had a long reach. This forced a change in Alis style making him come in in almost a crouch position at times and he was often the one pressing the fight. Reminds me of the Ray leonard and Thomas Hearns fights in a lot of ways. It made for a great tactical show in my opinion.

Bugner was there to survive bro.
Apart from one of the late rounds where he let Ali have it, Bugner stayed with his spoiling tactics so he could last the distance.
Bugner didn't have the stamina to out work Ali, which was an underrated part of Ali's game - his work rate. Even here in the 70s when when Ali was past his prime, he was still able to out work most of his younger opponents...

Buger said that when Quarry was in London preparing for his fight with Larry Middleton, Bugner had agreed to spar with him. Bugner got stuck in traffic and arrived more than one hour late. Quarry, who had a wicked temper, beat the living hell out of him for three rounds. Bugner said he would never spar with Jerry again. This was very early in Bugner's career. A more experienced Bugner against Jerry would have been a good fight. Bugner said that he sparred with Liston and Frazier also, and Liston went very easy on him.
