  • Guaraní means “war” or “to war”. The Mbyá Guaraní people, in the times before the European invasion, occupied more than 60% of the territory that is today Brazil. A culture of continental proportions, they also have roots in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia, so they are recognised as the Guaraní Nation. They are known for their ability to make great land journeys, often called walkers, explorers and communicators, given the great legacy left by building paths and roads throughout South America. The Mbyá Guaraní people cultivated bonds of friendship with the Mapuche in Patagonia, the Inca in the Andes and the Maya in the Caribbean region. They are considered the theologians of the jungle, and they keep their ancient astronomical knowledge in their myths and songs. In the Mbyá Guaraní genesis, the cardinal points are represented by the four gods that created the Earth: Ñamandú, Jakairã, Karaí and Tupã.
Karai Okenda Moreira is a recognised Mbyá Guaraní spiritual leader. Karai is the son of Werá Tupã (electric storm), born in 1910, who is the Guarani’s oldest and most famous pajè (shaman). Werá Tupã saw with his own eyes that his father, João Sabino Moreira, lived 130 years, and his grandfather, Vicente Okenda, lived 128 years -both also pajés. For all that, Karai has a vivid memory in his heart of the history of the Mbyá Guaraní people.
Mayra Marsango (Kunhatai Yva), Karai’s wife, is the leader and spokesperson of the tribe’s female force. She has been walking in the world of spirituality since 2009, has studied Mbyá Guaraní culture and is lovingly supported by her father-in-law, Werá Tupã, and her sisters-in-law, who introduced her to the knowledge of plant medicines and the sacred feminine. Karai and Mayra live in Tekoá Arandú (village of wisdom) in Santa Catarina, Brazil.
Rapé, a dried tobacco and tree ashes powder, is a sacred medicine used thousands of years ago by different indigenous tribes in the Amazon rainforest like the Yawanawá and Huni Kuin people. It is known for clearing the mind, grounding and connecting to your energy system and chakras. Rapé medicine invites you into a deep state of meditation which can liberate many emotions and parts of our unconscious mind.
Gratitude to Antonio Barra for the music: Tupã Mirim - Eina Corona.
