Good efforts for your student, Jason.And I agree, show something never opened it is a bad signal about your level. But I think still it is not ok to do smth artificial in front of a DPE. If you never read something or haven't prepared it is better to admit, than try to pretend look good in his/her eyes. Some mistakes could start from there.

Bring everything within reason. If you are flying to your checkride don't bring so much that it puts you outside your weight and balance!
