    I listened to a lot of mock checkrides before my own checkride, and the ones that you guys do are great, but if I could just offer 1 bit of feedback: since it's a mock checkride, it would be very helpful for the listeners if the DPE could correct the students incorrect answers, and fill in the correct answer when the student doesn't know. If the student gives an incorrect answer and the DPE just moves on from it, the listeners might think that the answer was actually correct, or if the student is omitting a lot of answers, then the listener isn't really learning anything. Otherwise, these mock checkrides are monumentally helpful, and I appreciate you guys for making them 👍

      I think the purpose of this is to gauge your knowledge based on the questions asked. If you know the answers, then you know them. If you don't, then write that question down and dig into some study materials after. I get what you're looking for, but this is supposed to be ran like a simulated oral exam and in the spirit of keeping it as authentic as possible, it's best to keep moving forward.

    First of all thank you for creating another checkride video. These are ALWAYS appreciated and I know these videos are just to help us understand what a checkride might look like. And any video with Todd is also always appreciated. My recommendation for the future would be to pick students who are a little further along in their training and can answer more questions. For instance, not knowing how to read a complete METAR (or even knowing the name of it, in this case) shows he still has a long ways to go before he's ready, and this can make these kinds of videos a little more difficult to watch. Kudos to him for being willing to go on camera though. That takes a special kind of bravery.

    He’s about where I’d want my student to be at still over 5 weeks out. I will say a couple things were a bit weaker than I’d allow my applicants to be, but he was pretty solid on some areas as well. I teach airspeed to glide before checklist if there’s a thrust issue then checklist and delegate if possible. Also, he probably should’ve planned his Cross country with paper as a DPE in a mood can absolutely say: “Ok and your iPad overheats.”

So from looking at it, I would say Class G up to 700 AGL. Then Class E up to 1,299 MSL, then Class C from 1,300 to 4,100 MSL, Then Class E again from 4,101 up to but not including Flight level 180, which becomes Class A which goes up to FL600. Then Class E again up to heaven. Again, just having fun here and testing my old knowledge.

    Thank you for the video and to Todd for presenting a good example of typical private checkride oral questioning. I am a CFI and I came to this video seeking material to use in my own mock checkride exercises with learners. I will point out an error that I noticed in the latter part of the video regarding symbology on the Savannah airport diagram. I believe Todd indicated in the debrief that the zig-zag or Z-shaped lines across the runways dictate the LAHSO operations, which is incorrect. In fact, these symbols indicate arresting gear (which is not applicable to civilian pilots but is applicable to military use which makes sense since we see Georgia Air National Guard base areas labeled on the diagram at SAV). The LAHSO lines are drawn much closer to the intersection of the runways directly adjacent to the "LAHSO" labels and are straight dashed lines across the runway.

    This video could be made into a mini-series of 2-3 videos if after each answer the student gives the examiner or a CFI would comment both on the question (why the question is important and in what context) and on the student's answer, and give the ideal expected answer in case the student missed it. The total duration would probably increase 5 fold that's why a mini series would be more convient.

    Nice video! However, asking questions and not providing feedback is not 100% useful and can lead to misinformation and misinterpretation. We all know that checkrides ask questions we don't need a video for that. What we do need is to listen to the questions, answer from student and ultimately feedback from instructor. Otherwise you can get other students confused that a wrong answer is actually correct. Unless one actually knows all of the answers but then they wont be needing a video for that.

    For PPL students watching this in preparing for their check ride, I can see them becoming very confused with the responses that are given by the applicant. A student may not know that the applicant in this case is saying the correct answer or not. Unfortunately, this may inadvertently cause the student to believe the response given *is* the correct answer.
    You may want to take down this video and rethink your approach.
    That being said, I really do appreciate and have enjoyed all of your other training videos over the years, including your previous mock checkride videos.

      If you watched through the end, he clearly covers everything he got wrong in detail. Him saying "okay, good" can be confusing but I just took it as him saying that he was just glad to get an answer and move along to the next question. Students who are ACTUALLY ready for their oral portion will already know what questions this guy got wrong. I yelled at the TV several times watching this. Videos like this need to stay up so that some overly confident students can maybe humble themselves a little bit. This guy's check ride was apparently in five weeks and in my opinion, he bombed this entire oral on a grand scale. Both with his lack of knowledge on what should be easy things, AND the fact that he broke the first rule of answering more than just the answer. He went off on random tangents and it only kept digging a good deeper. His cfi should have told him, answer only what's asked and that's it! If he wants to know more, make him ask.

    Was this kid's instructor pissed at him? I hope he studied a LOT before his ride. To be fair, I don't know what stage he's in with his training but I would expect they would pick someone almost ready for their ride. I think the DPE gives a great oral but you guys didn't do this kid any favors by essentially humiliating him like this. I feel like on a real oral, he would've failed even before the halfway point.

    I would have failed the kid in the first 5 minutes😂 The guy isn't ready.... I don't think he gave a straight answer on any of the questions. I heard I don't think so way too many times. "Maybe" "im not sure"..... no way that's a pass.

    • @GoldSealFlight
      @GoldSealFlight  Před 11 měsíci +11

      Thanks for the comment, Shawn. Remember that the purpose of the video isn't to judge a particular student's performance. It's meant as an example of what a checkride oral might look like. Whether this applicant passed or failed is irrelevant. The goal is to show student pilots what to expect.

    • @shawnnance3670
      @shawnnance3670 Před 11 měsíci +7

      @@GoldSealFlight The content you guys create is great, my issue with this particular video is that the applicant was so unprepared, it was extremely distracting. It was painful to watch, perhaps next time have a guest that's further along and actually prepared to take the oral. My wife isn't a student pilot or a pilot, but she helped me study with flashcards and such. She was able to answer many of the basic questions the applicant wasn't able to. The applicant said "I'm not sure" or "I don't know" more than providing actual answers to Todd's questions. Todd was like ooooook, moving on. That had to be uncomfortable. The CFI's response that he was "happy" is beyond shocking... If you're a CFI and your happy with your students inability to answer even the most basic questions, you probably shouldn't be a CFI. How in God's name can a student pilot that's flying airplanes not be able to determine airworthiness? You literally cant start the airplane without going through that process. What kind of CFI allows a student to get behind the controls without understanding if its even legal to fly? How in God's name can a student pilot not know about a METAR, its the centerpiece to pretty much every flight most GA pilots make. Perhaps the CFI should require his student to demonstrate this knowledge before letting him fly. Todd has done other mock checkride videos, those were better. Maybe if you changed the title to "Mock Checkride, what not to do" or if you really want to get some clicks throw up a thumbnail of someone crying "Todd Shellnutt bodyslams PPL applicant" or start a new Gold Seal video series "Checkride Disasters" , throw up a nice thumbnail of the FAR AIM in flames.....Remember your audience is based on the title you use. Student pilots who are further along and ready to actually take the oral will get zero benefit from this video, in fact it probably hurts them. If I were you guys I'd drop the video, its just horrible and completely unrealistic. I'm friends with a DPE, we watched it together and had a good laugh. He was like, naw, that oral would have been over after about 10 minutes. If you're going to do another video, just use a more advanced student, this kid isn't even close. I'm more interested in seeing the rabbit holes that Todd would go down with someone more advanced.... my 2 cents... oh, METARS are observations that refresh around 55 past the hour....

      Man you nailed it 100 percent with that post also for me I think all pp should learn xcountry nav with paper sectional e6b and a pencil most dpes should absolutely fail any electronic devices in flight including his iPad which he still didn’t understand 100 percent when that happens in his checkride he will be finished as he should be

      Not failing someone for using an electronic device failing the actual device in flight what happens when the dpe in the upwind taking off says oh no you just dropped your iPad and it stopped working that’s why all in my opinion pp students should learn the paper sectional and the e6b learn from the ground up this approach he is doing is running before learning to walk

      There is some truth to your statement. It is, unfortunately, not uncommon for instructors to be the weak link in the chain, sending unprepared students to checkrides. However, regardless of how well the student did, the video still provides viewers an important look at the oral exam process. Seeing how a checkride is conducted will help prepare students for their own Practical Tests.

    Adding random GPS waypoints only defined by time intervals and not even bothering to naming them shows me this student either has never filed a flight plan or never had to explain his route to ATC or simply never had any counselling on how to plan cross-country VFR flights. So he had his planned route printed out but what if the Ipad overheats in the cockpit as they do and turns off? Good luck with finding your GPS coordinates on the chart and creating the link between what random emptyness there is around your random GPS waypoint and what landmarks you actually see looking out. Do today's pilots actually still look out and pay attention to terrain or do they mostly fly head down aligning their heading with the planned GPS trace on the iPad?
