Suntour Coil Fork - Lower Leg Service

  • Join me in this 'How To' video to learn how to perform a lower leg service on a budget coil fork. My fork is a Suntour SR Raidon, but this pretty much applies to any coil fork that you would want to perform a lower leg service on. It is not as hard as you might think, and definitely worth doing. My forks didn't have hardly any grease/lubrication inside, and that needed to change!

    Just to let you know: this video has helped me. I was looking how to remove the rebound twist dial on my raidon fork in order to install a remote lockout cartridge. Now I'm less scared to try pulling the fork apart and back together again. Thanks

      Same here - had the rebound adjust allen bolt stuck in the outer screw and hadn't thought about simply pulling it off ;D Now that I know everything went fine and my raidon runs smoothly with fresh grease/oil =)

    You're better off using isopropyl alcohol on the stanchions because it evaporates. Soapy water could leave a residue behind. 👍

    I find it easier to do this with the bike upside down so I can put my foot on the handlebar to separate the outer fork from the stantions. This makes a huge difference on an older mtb so I agreed it’s totally worth.

    I've read on other videos that the cavity under the wiper seals (where you put the grease) can take foam wipers from other forks. They are soaked in oil and apparently make the fork much better.

    I have a set of suntor XCR32 Coil Forks and have had then for 2 years,
    They have been good and I need to service the lowers to remove grime and re lube. I serviced my friends XCM forks and they were fine. However, when I tried to service my forks, the nut on the bottom just keeps spinning meaning I cannot remove the lowers. I have tried everything like giving them a hit with a mallet but nothing works,
    Please help

  • @smallhatshatethetruth7933

    There's so many bloody variants I don't know what my fork contains. I have NCX D-LO. I assume it's coil and don't have to worry about oil?

    • @DilbertMuc
      @DilbertMuc Před 3 lety

      There is a coil NCX-D-LO and air NCX-E-LO version. You need to read the little sticker and look up on Suntour's website. There you find all detailed schematics of these forks. I have both, coil and air and they are excellent. They are greased, not oiled.

    • @jansvasta2146
      @jansvasta2146 Před 3 lety

      All Suntour forks, whether coil or air, have grease in the lowers. No oil. I have the Raidon LO-R (air) and it only has a bit oil in the air chamber (does not leak when you pull it apart).

    • @AshfordMTB
      @AshfordMTB  Před 4 lety +1

      You can, but there may be oil in the lower legs. A bit of research on the web for your fork model should tell you which oil, and how much you will require.

    I have rust on my stancions. Can I remove it with fine sandpaper?

    • @AshfordMTB
      @AshfordMTB  Před 4 lety +1

      To try and salvage them I would try a metal polish and rag first. Sandpaper could well be too harsh, but depending on the amount of rust that is present, you may have to. Maybe even a scotch brite pad before polish. Use the metal polish after to get it as smooth as possible. Only problem will be is that the rust will return. Always wipe them down after a wet ride, and maybe smear a very small amount of fork oil on them.

    • @meinefresse94
      @meinefresse94 Před 4 lety +1

      @@AshfordMTB Thanks for the quick reply. I will try metal polish. If that does not help I wil find something like the scotch pad.

    there is black greese type stuff building up on right but not the left, do you have any clue what it could be

    • @AshfordMTB
      @AshfordMTB  Před 5 lety

      I would say that it is lack of grease on the inside of the wiper seals. I had this on both legs until I performed the lower leg service.

    • @mydaddrinksbathwater9103
      @mydaddrinksbathwater9103 Před 5 lety

      @@AshfordMTB thanks for the info man! also there is some scratches on the fork where the black resedue has collected grit and has scratched my forks, do you know what I can do about scratches

    • @AshfordMTB
      @AshfordMTB  Před 5 lety

      Depends how deep the scratches are. As I mentioned in the video, some really fine wet & dry paper with some metal polish. If you can't feel the scratch with your finger, I wouldn't worry about it. If it is quite pronounced, it may have damaged your wiper seal.
      Sort the scratch if needed, perform the lower leg service and have a look at the wiper seal on that side, if it looks damaged, best get another pair of seals.
