- I show how to tear down, clean, lubricate and rebuild Suntour XCM (SF11-XCM-V3) forks/shocks. Periodic maintenance will help prolong the life of the fork and maintain performance. Basic service to keep your suspension working and from becoming stiff or frozen. I bought this fork on craigslist for $20. The XCM fork models have varied over the years. This fork is a SF11-XCM-V3-DS-PM-26-120.
There are different versions of XCM forks. This is an SF11. If yours has a lockout, you have a different version. You might check out my video overhauling an XCR fork that has a lockout:

* Use grease made for forks. I use Slickoleum which is also sold under the name Slick Honey. You can also use SRAM Butter or Judy Butter. If the fork uses oil, use the proper fork oil. Use of a grease/oil not made specifically for forks can damage the plastic/polyurethane parts, or otherwise leave the fork not working properly.

The family heirloom lube can is still mostly full.
True words
... The bike shop says they are disposable forks, but so long as you can get the parts - they will ride again! Looks much easier than I expected too. Thank you
Probably the best, most concise, informative vid there is on stripping these forks. Thanks 👌
Definitely.
Are there adjustments on those forks. I got a bike with mozo m30 forks and there dosen't seem to be any adjustments.
@@josephforcino8099 No, not really. You can adjust the preload, but in reality it makes very little difference. These are a cheap, made for purpose fork. They'll hold your front wheel on but don't expect any more than that.
@@r.davies2702 more like 'made for looks'... unless 'deception' was the purpose 🙉
Thank you RJ! Fixed my choppy action and leaky seals myself with this tutorial! Keep doing what you are doing, it truly helps!!
Good job describing how to do this job! Even someone who has never touched a wrench would understand this!
Had a different fork, but the principles contained here helped a lot in doing a full service, and getting some movement back in my previously stuck fork.
Just happen I need this video today, and you've uploaded on the same day, Amazing.
Thanks so much!!! I ordered the repair kit from Suntour and everything I needed except your instruction was in the package. Dang! I forgot what suspension was supposed to feel like!! Much appreciated.
Cracking video, as always, many thanks RJ. Your attention to detail and excellent editing are very much appreciated. I‘ll be tackling my forks tomorrow! Cheers, Simon
Best suntour fork service I've ever seen. Love your work RJ
BIG THANKS RJ done overhaul on suntour xcm, from total seized fully striped down to fully working and lockout fixed (p.s vinegarr soaking rush over night worked a dream)
Your video is awesome 🙌,I’ve watched a lot of videos regarding these forks, and this is the only one that’s given me the confidence to strip them down myself, thank you and pls keep up these awesome videos it helps people to save money and enjoy servicing you bike 👍🏻🤪😎👏👏👏
Straight too the basics. No thrills... Loving it!
Now all I need is that tool to take off the adjustment caps and a proper stand. Always wanted to do self service, thankfully I bumped into this vid. You made it look so easy and it's not a hassle to learn. Thank you!
Straight to the point, and easy to listen to, Best video I've seen so far. Have to transfer parts from one fork to another and couldn't work out the best order to strip them.
Good Video man, the world needs more videos like this and people like you!
Thanks a lot mate. I finally serviced a fork that I had dreaded the very thought for months because I couldn't find a detailed guide
Thank you so much for making this video easy to understand. Looking forward to maintaining my fork of 20 years.
Really helpful video, all steps well explained in detail.
I have one of these forks and now I am prepared in case I need to service it.
"its for cleaning shotguns, picked it up at a local garage sell" is such an american thing to say
Yeah elsewhere on the planet we just use bottle brush😅
Now I know why I have to get rid of my XCMs ASAP! Great vid.
every time I need video for a bike repair you provide every time ,thank you RJ 🙏😀,,🇬🇧
Again one ofvyour videos a great help , just finished my first service on my XCM lowers till my tool for uppers arrived, thanks dude 😎☘

You made it look so easy! Hope it’s that easy when I service my forks! Thanks for the great video!

I’ve always wondered what these horrible things look like inside. Thank you :)
oh man, you just confirmed my thoughts... I did get a springy shock on my new to me bike. Now I know I will be looking for upgraded shocks. Great video!
Thank you so much for this tear down/assembly, super helpful!
Will find out if the overall saves my old fork when the Suntour tool arrives.
I found it easiest to order the tool directly from suntour.
did you?
Another great video to add to your already fairly health library, excellent work RJ

I needed this ! Thanks man
Thanks for the video. Cant tell you how much I appreciate all that you do!!!
This was very helpful, more so than other videos. I have water and rust in mine because i thought you never had to take these apart, going to print myself the tool and fix it forst thing in the morning.
Just pulled an old Scott YZ15 out of the garage and need to do the brakes. Fork has oil on the outside so wasn’t sure if the seals had gone. This was the first vid when I typed xcm fork strip into the search. Nice to see they are about as advanced as my 1966 Triumph Tiger Cub forks.😅 At least I now know it’s not oil leaking out of the forks.
I’ll have a mooch and see if you’ve done a brake service on Shimano BLM hydraulic system.
I’ve liked this vid and subscribed, as you seem to have struck a happy balance between explanation and showing the process. Not so complicated you’d frighten a newcomer, and not so simple that someone with some mechanical knowledge is left wanting. Nice job!
Awesome video thanks. Worked on cars all my life but now I have to learn bikes.
My first time dealing with xcm forks. Thank you for the video great help 👍.
Good job. You give me the confidence to tackle the job myself.
Just got a pair of these forks for my late 90s diamondback apex this vid is perfect
Bless from Chile.. Never stop making videos please.. Never forget
Nice video and very helpful for your newbie home mechanic fans. Since suntour is the first choice for almost all the bike manufacturer's entry level segment, chances are xct, xcm, xcr forks are their one and only way to go. almost all of their super cheap to mid level hardtails got these models and sometimes rockshox xc 28, xc 30 coil varients can be seen. Again thanks for your tutorial. Watching this before disassembly, is really assuring for anyone. Want this type of tutorials even more.
Thanks man. This cured a creak that I thought was terminal for the fork
Thanks for the advise as the only video found explaning on the fork sleeve and movement thanks again.
Great explanation.. and practical demonstration... you didn’t try and confuse with too many technical terms ..!!!👌👌👌👌thats just what a beginner needs !!! Well done and thank you for your time and effort!!!👍👍😁😁😁😁😁
thank you for this service instructions. also well spoken english. so i can understand almost 100%. thanks from germany
I learned from you so many things, thank you for these awesome videos. You rock!
Thanks for sharing this detailed video... I have to service my fork from my Cannondale and now I know exactly what I will face and what to do... :>))
Wow! Concise, easy to follow video. Excellent!
Excellent vidio chuffed i found this as i thought all forks services were expensive and time consuming . Didnt even know these had springs inside.
Now that's a useful video! Servicing an entry level fork at home. Most people pay for the service almost as much as getting a used fork, why not doing it yourself. It would be awesome if you could do the same with RockShox Dart 3 fork. I think Dart lineup is about the same for servicing but that's just a wild estimation.
Is there even a reason to service forks like these? I mean I can see no benifit to doing so. There are no seals that can leak or real performance increase afterwards. Perhaps all reason I can think is if a part is badly worn out or damaged
@@paul-stefandutoit8990 worn bushings, hardened grease and bad seals that are letting dirt in.
Water pools in the bottom, rust
@@gryyta9617 soo they dont need to be serviced on working hours like air ? On every 120 Hours new sels and stuff .
@@nikolajovic8497 Not really, but they sure get worn. You can check the service manual for real h numbers or so.
Great instructional service video...I have these forks on my Bianchi Kuma 5300 hardtail and found it very useful. Thanks very much indeed 👍😀
Tnx so much for this kind of videos that just having ideas how to reconditioned of your fork, specially with my santour fork xcm...
Thanks for this video! Love from Malaysia!
Thank's a Lot for your video !! I used this video to disassemble other sr Suntour fork's ...and I ca say once you got the concept no Suntour fork's can resist to me !!! I already fix 2 of them and I'm going to fix another one soon...The sr Suntour tool was very useful !! And It easy to find on Ebay as you mentioned ....Thank's a lot gr8 job gr8 video !! :-0)
This is great!! I got a mtb for free, but the forks are rusted and seized up. Being that its a cheaper bike, I didn't want to spend $$ on a new fork. I'd just have to get the tool to get the top caps out. Overall, a really great video. Thank you.
thank you for helping us. more power to you RJ. keep it up! 🤙
Nice one saved me time and money on my giant Ltd mb, stripping bike down and servicing, ready for spring bike packing, changing rear cassette and front rings too.
Nice guide Mate, mine is XCE 28 and would love to strip and grease it. This guide seems spot on apart from my drive side has the lock on and non drive side with the rebound adjustment.
Instead of tapping the nuts on the bottom, we found its far quicker to take the nuts completely off and tap the brace with a mallet. We get a lot of these forks in my shop
What a great video! I needed it, and it's perfectly explained.
Great video and way of explaining
Nice how you Are not only saying what are you doing, but also why. Thanks
Perfect. Thank you.
Greetings from Portugal.
Usted lo hace simple y excelente!
Thank you very much, more than wonderful video, and the explanation is very excellent

first time servicing a fork, all went well!
Thanks heaps man I've always been cautious of working on suspension until now!!
As soon as you liked I got my lowers off🤣 Still waiting on the tool!

Great detail guy👍
I have a XCM 30 on my GT Avalanche Comp 2019, I just clicked the preload 4 clicks towards the frame and it's honestly good enough for some of the downhill trails i ride..
I have the same fork
Thanks for the video....I'm very grateful to you
great tutorial....i have that brand currently on my bike. it’s getting replaced asap. want something lite and more flexibility in its settings
that was a great vid now i can do my forks with a bit more confidence
Mine has 9 months in service now and started working incorrrectly, with its back travel getting slower like an airlplane landing gear shock. Again, bike forks should be capable of fast feedback, given the low mass of the cyclist + bike system. Dampers, especially viscous-type, like the hydraulic cartridges are intended to slow down the return travel on large mass systems to prevent them from bouncing for too long. That's taught on the basiscs of the mechanical engineering course, on vibration, and this is why car suspensions have a coil + fluid damper system. Back to my XCM 30, after these 9 months, it started to rub, making it sluggish on its back travel. When I opened it, I found the reason: The plastic caps at the end of the coil spings were too tight to the internal wall so as soon as they got some dirty and the ends of the coils got a bit rusty, they started to hold it back at the begining of the back travel, due the increased friction. After some finish sanding, it now works correctly, being promptly ready for the next obstacle as soon as it gets off the 1st. High frequency shock absorving function is back to mine now. I dare to say that under certain circumstances it works better than my Rockshox Judy from my 2nd bike, which is a fair comparison as it's also a coil spring fork. Althouh both are obviously not comparable to an air susp, Suntour has the advantages of being cheap and easy to maintain at home. The big problem I noticed is the rust on the chromed legs before 1 year in service, as these are parts that aren't worth to replace, epseciallly from the complexity and safety standpoints.
