REAL Russian Accent (from slight to evil)

  • I am a native Russian speaker and in this video I demonstrate several stages of Russian accent. Beginning with a slight accent and all the way to "evil Russian". Russian accents are sometimes misrepresented in movies. The funniest thing about it is when all Russian speak like some kind of mobsters. Although, in a lot of cases this is correct because, well, in a lot of cases Russian movies characters are actually mobsters.
This is not a lesson on how to do a Russian accent, but if you want to master it (for whatever reason), feel free to follow my tips that I give in the video.

I'm impressed how easily you can switch between these accents. Also, that you can pronounce "th". We don't have that sound in German either, and I just never can get it to sound right when I try to pronounce it.
Completely agree btw about the accents, as long as we can understand each other, it doesn't matter if we speak with a bit of an accent. I actually quite like most accents, they give the language some character. Except of course the German accent, which is dreadful :P

Having an accent is fine... unless it's German or Rusisian :D
For me the trickiest part is vowels and intonation. Speaking with a different intonation is like walking in a different way, with a different walk, it only works as long as you are concentrated on it.

помню в школе мне проще было учиться на немецком языке чем на английском , для русскоязычных немецкий произносится так же естественно как и русский , к тому же проще с письменностью , запомнив несколько комбинаций букв для определенных звуков легко можно записывать на слух , в английском слышишь одно , а записываешь другое ))

The only problem with people faking russian/ ukrainian/ the likes is that it's a Russian accent hyperimposed above an English accent. Like for instance, read this in a russian accent: "Hello, my name is viktor ivanov". You probably pronounced it like this: Hello, my name is vic•tor Eye•vanov. In writing it would be "Здравствуйте, меня зовут Виктор Иванов". One thing to notice is that Ivanov (иванов) does not start with an "i", but rather a "y" that is pronounced like ē, or ee. Like Henry, my name. So ivanov in a russian accent would sound like eevanov. Another thing to note is that Russians typically emphasise a single vowel in a word; I will use capital letters to visualize this. Ivanov= EEvanov. Hello= haillOH.
There are a many other things to consider when imitating a russian accent convincingly, you must learn how the russian accent sounds while speaking russian. It's not just the pitch and flow of a sentence or word, but specifically how the letters of words interact with eachother.

Russia is huge and has a lot of different ethnic groups that nevertheless speak Russian in a day-to-day life. This guy could be kalmyk, kazakh, udmurt, buryat, hanty, tuvan (there's this one infamous dude from Tuva called Sergey as well, smh) or anybody else for that matter. Those nations actually descent from the same mongolian tribes that the Chinese descent from. My guess is one of the aforementioned groups, but I'm not from the Asian part of Russia to actually identify which one in particular.
